hiphopismylifeParticipantI read where one scout said that he believes Josh Selby will be a better pro than Kyrie Irving because he is more explosive and every bit the playmaker. I personally disagree because although Selby has all the tools to be a really productive pro, Irving brings the total package with the kind of maturity and poise that could possibly make him a real franchise point guard. Just my opinion. What do you guys think?

JNixonParticipantSelby is a combo guard who may be as exciting a player as Irving, but I would rather have Irving. He’s a better pure PG, and he has the ability to score at all 3 levels at the same time too. Selby has the potential to be a Steve Francis type, but I’d rather have Irving, since he has the ability to be an elite PG with elite scoring tools too. I’d rather have a pure PG than a combo guard honestly.

Mr. 19134ParticipantI agree with that scout and I think Shelby could move into the top 5.
People were saying the same thing about the difference between Jrue Holiday and Brandon Jennings last year.
But Shelby is bigger and way more physically gifted then Irving. He will have an easier transition to the NBA because of his speed and strength at the PG position.
I don’t really view Shelby as a combo guard because he has good court vision and can make the difficult pass. It was interesting that in the McDonalds All American game Shelby played more minutes on the same team and they finished with almost identical numbers except Irving had more turnovers and and Shelby had more assists.
I think Shelby is the type of player people love to label as a combo guard because he has the size to play shooting guard and in high school he could score whenever he wanted so thats what he usually did.
Wait and see on Kansas this year what Shelby can do with some talent around him. He will be running and gunning in that Kansas offense and I think he could have a huge year.

Kinguy11ParticipantKyle Irving’s way better, what are you guys thinking!

hiphopismylifeParticipant19134 I dont think hes way more physically gifted. Irving is a very good athlete as well. I agree that the assertion of someone as a combo guard can be unfair at times but in Selby’s case I think it’s warranted. As good a dimer as he can be his game is scoring first. This isn’t a question of talent. Bill Self already called Selby the most talented player hes recruited to KU. But as far as this comparison to Holiday/Jennings I disagree. There was never any doubt that Jennings was a point guard. If anything Irving would be the Jennings to Selby"s Holiday imo.

Mr. 19134ParticipantCould be right and look how Jrue Holiday has turned out to be a fine PG in the NBA despite not even playing PG in college. I just think Shelby got all the tools to be a great PG. He has the court vision and passing ability it’s just a matter of mentality really. But once he plays on a team with other talented players at Kansas I think he will prove himself to be possibly the best PG in this class. He has every tool Irving and Knight has but for some reason just doesn’t get the love.

Mr. 19134ParticipantCan I ask you guys a question since we’re on the topic?
When I watch Irving play he reminds me so much of Jrue Holiday at the same stage. They are both extremely smooth and operate well withing traffic. Both of their games come off as effortless as times.
But who do you think is the better prospect coming out of H.S.
Jrue Holiday or Irving?
Holiday is a few inches taller, and stronger, plus he may be quicker. But I think Irving may have better full court speed.

Mr.Knick 32ParticipantKyle Irving’s way better,
Not breaking balls but…Kyrie.

Mr. 19134ParticipantDo you think Irving is as good a defender as Jrue, and who do you think is the better athlete because they play at about the same speed. Neither one of them plays above the rim either although Holiday is longer.

Mr.Knick 32ParticipantI think Jrue will and should be a better defender then Kyrie at thier peaks.
0 - Posted on: Fri, 10/08/2010 - 12:12pm #410429
Im Your FatherParticipantNot a good comparison. Kyrie is much more of a true point guard than Jrue Holiday.

JNixonParticipantIrving has more scoring ability and better natural playmaking ability. Irving potential is more Chris Paul than Jrue Holiday. Holiday will be a better defender though.

Mr. 19134ParticipantBut where do you guys get that Irving is a better scorer and a purer PG. In High School Holiday averaged more points and assists and ranked number one by ESPNU coming out of HS. And was a top 2 guard on Rivals and Scout.
Coming out of HS Holiday had a better resume then Irving, I don’t see Chris Paul in Irving at all I think that is totally overrated. Brandon Knight and Josh Shelby could potentially both be taken ahead of Irving in the draft right now it looks like Irving but remember last year at the same time Holiday was a top 10 pick also.
0 - Posted on: Fri, 10/08/2010 - 3:44pm #410498
Im Your FatherParticipantWell, Holiday was always seen as a combo first of all. Second of all, I’m basing my opinions on having watched them play. It is obvious that Irving has better passing instincts. Also, Irving played on one of the best high school teams in the country, so his stats weren’t going to be as high, and he still averaged something like 25, 7 and 6.

Demarcus OnealParticipantStats in High school are not relative and are inflative looking at assist numbers in highschool all over the country it is impossible to measure a players skill. Going to Max Preps and finding the guy with the most ppg in the country doesnt mean that player is a better pure scorer the Austin Rivers or soemone with lower ppg numbers. Which differs from higher levels of play such as college basketball or NBA/ Europe where stats are much more relevant.

hiphopismylifeParticipant19134 Done let that get to you. Some people just get way too much joy out of hitting that thumbs down button. To answer your question:Selby may not get the love but all three guys will have the chance to seperate from one another this season. They are all on contending teams and will have the ball from day one, if Selby is in fact eligible. I think Holiday and Irving have similar demeanors as far s being mature, high IQ guys but I think Irving is deifinitely faster with the ball and a better shooter at this stage. Holiday is the better defender and is one of the rare combo guards that can efficiently lead a team to play winning basketball. We cant read too much into stats in high school because it REALLY varies. Irving was on a much more talented high school team than Holiday so that probably played a part.

JNixonParticipantWhy do you complain about points so much 19134? You give yourself points, and then complain whenever somebody takes a point from you. Have you ever noticed that you do that? Just post, points have no value dude. You can’t do anything with them anyway
