Both are going to be great point guards in the NBA, but lets look at a head to head look at their games.

Passing: Advantage Rubio. I highly doubt Rubio averages that many assists on the Cavs team but his passes are a thing of beauty. Kyrie is also a great passer but until he gets some better teammates I doubt many in the public will notice.

Driving/Handles: Advantage Irving. Though Rubio has some crafty moves and headfakes to get to the bucket, Kyrie just has a sensational ability to get to the basket and make fantastic finishes.

3 point shot: Advantage Rubio. A lot of people said Rubio couldn’t shoot coming into the season but he has definitely put the doubters to rest. I doubt he maintains his percentage from three point land but he is definitely reliable from out there. Kyrie was a good 3 point shooter in college so I bet he’ll get better from long range by the end of the season.

Scoring: Advantage Irving. Irving has shown that he can score from literally anywhere on the court. Dunk, layup, midrange and 3 point land are all in Kyrie’s repertoire. However, Rubio isn’t in Minnesota to score but as his game matures I can definitely see him adding a midrange shot to his game.

Leadership: Wash. Rubio is already a great leader in that he runs his team so well. He also has great chemistry with his teammates. Irving also showed great leadership capabilites at Duke and they are now showing in Cleveland as he gets more comfortable with his teammates.

I’d say right now it is up to preference or opinion. Rubio gets more hype due to his flashiness and the fact that the Cavs DON’T HAVE ONE nationally televised game this season. But personally I’d rather have Irving because he is more of the complete point guard and I would rather pick him over Rubio if I was starting a new franchise.

However, on teams that have an abundance of talent, pgs like Rubio are of utmost importance. Right now I think Rubio and Rondo are two of the best at making talented pieces into a well oiled machine. Though Rondo is more athletic and and a better defender, Rubio is already a better shooter and he has been in the league for less than 20 games.

I understand that there are a lot of Rubio homers on this site (Rubio’s an amazing player not hating) but before you make a judgement on who is better just watch one of Kyrie’s games. I think you’ll leave with a better than expected opinion of him than you think. I warn you that his teammates are horrible and Kyrie should be averaging 8 -10 assits per game if they were talented enough, but still Kyrie is a stud and is really fun to watch.
