     Player 1 – Senior season – Per 40

    22.7 pts/  .60% FG/  16.1 rbs/  3.6 blks

    Player 2 – Senior season – Per 40

    24.3 pts/  .59% FG/  13.3 rbs/  4.1 blks

    Player 1 is Tim Duncan.

    Player 2 is AJ Hammons.

I know stats aren’t everything. I’m sure other players have come along posting similar Per 40 stats as Duncan over the years. I made a post stating that I thought Hammons would be a steal in the second round. I then read something calling Hammons a poor mans Tim Duncan. So I did a little research to see how they compared their senior years in college. Found it to be pretty interesting. Again, the big red flag with Hammons revolves around his character/motor. If a team develops this guy properly I think they’re looking at a huge steal if they were to get him in the second round.

Yeah Per 40 stats are almost useless, but Hammons is definitely an interesting prospect. While you can’t teach the height and he did show some touch with a nice little jumper; the eye test showed me that he looked very slow on the court and if you are a slow 7 footer in today’s NBA, you are out in 2-3 years(Jerome Jordan, Jeremy Tyler, Greg Stiemsma, etc.)

Duncan also played 10 more minutes per game his senior year and his whole career at Wake. This tells me Hammonds has major conditioning issues and will be better suited coming off the bench in his NBA career.

Jahlil Okafor even played 30 mins per game at Duke despite his clear conditioning issues. Hammonds could be a steal in the 2nd round as a decent rotational big but the Duncan comparison is unwarranted to say the least.
