Injury is a part of everyday life in the pro sporting world, but its a lot easier to cope with if you’re earning millions while you recover. It’s worse when you are injured in the amateur leagues.

I’ve been out for about 15 weeks with a tibial stress fracture and its been real hard. Mine happened just as a result of playing a whole heap over the years and a fault in the way I planted my feet while running. To cope I’ve taken up coaching, writing an NBA blog and spend a lot of my time on this forum but its getting in the latter stages of the recovery where I’m getting a bit edgy and frustrated. Got a meeting with a physio today, hoping for good news.

So for those of you who have had long layoffs from injury just from playing the game you love, let this be a thread where you share your stories about what your worst injury was, how you got it and how you kept yourself from going crazy not being able to ball.

Trust me when i was younger I had a knee injury that took me out for most of my best high school year and it hurt mentally but sometimes it is better to let your body heal do you recovery so that your future will be brighter. I kept coming back to early and had to not really work out or play ball for close to a year. It was best that I did not gain to much muscle mass while my knee was healing because that extra weight was being felt

i chipped off a chunk of my ankle when i was 16 playing at open gym at University of new mexico. im about 6’1″ and back then i was dunking on the fast break pretty regularly. after 3 1/2 months on crunches it took me till my senior year to get back to where i was at athletically. it was tough not playin and then once i came back playing slower then i used too. I feel for any kid that feels like their dream is running away from them while their out with an injury.

Wow sorry to hear that symbol. my right knee bugs me every now and then but I am good most days and I just turned 30 but I have not been as active sports wise like I used to be and being in the Navy and being underway a lot I did not play sport much but worked out on machine that dont tend to put as much pressure on your joints.

I am a senior at a current div 1 school and i have battled my fair share of injuries from stress fractures, dislocated fingers, pulled muscles you name it. they suck. no question. but there is always that burning desire to get myself better and get back in the race! my advice to those dealing with injuries is to try and stay as positive as you can and try to learn something while your out so that you can get back faster and be better than before. although we compete were all in this together. 1.

I did not have surgery like a lot of people did and a have also had some other injuries like a broke bone in my hand that did help my learn to shoot and do stuff left handed. God has just blessed that I recovered so well because I am surprise that I dont have any issues from my past injuries because at the time they were pretty tough especially my knee injury.

Prime4breakout stay encouraged man because when i was hurt, I did not have too much access to the internet and all these forums and it felt like I was depressed by myself. People will kick you when you are down like you was good and all of sudden when you get injured and maybe try to play a lil bit and you are rusty or not the same player they like you are garbage like you didnt used to ball earlier.

sheltwon3, your always a somebody man no matter what happens with basketball remember that. And i know what it feels like when your were killing guys on the court then you play after an injury and it takes time to get your legs back. Thats exactly why Im working out quietly on my own so when i play it will be like i haven’t missed a beat! 🙂 they wont even see it coming.

I’m only 15 and gonna be a Junior in high school next year, but everyone in my family has horrible knees. Both my older brother and sister have had their knee caps pop out to the side of their knee, and it happens pretty regularly if they don’t wear their knee braces. I’m hoping it doesn’t happen to me

Subzero you can do exercises that strengten the muscle around your knees. Look it up and do those to help prevent it from happening

Just got back from the physio and had an X-Ray. The fracture seems to have healed up completely and I’m two weeks of hard rehab away from being back on the courts. This is the best feeling in the world, lets just hope my knees don’t screw up again. Thanks for all the support guys, if its one thing basketball players can agree on/know all about almost universally is injuries.

are pieces off shit right now. i just turn 18 in the middle of july. i have some shit called osgood schalatter disease according to the doctor. they say some teens who are athletes get it while they are growing but i have been this height for about 3 years and i am 18 so i dont think i am growing anymore.this shit bothers me like hell. you must watch your weight while you are injured i sprained a ligament in my foot when i was 15 and i put on 25 pounds in about a month and a half. i didnt even see the weight being put on…..but this stuff in my knee is killling me as of now

So by the time I got into my frosh year I was behind, I wasn’t very quick at all and it took me some time to get to full strength. But after a while I got back to being me. Funny thing is, me and my grandpa are the only people to be athletic in my family at all so Im surprised I recovered as well as i did

Prime, it was because i rushed backed but that was in my younger days and I was a basketball fanatic. I still love basketball but I dont have the time to be that kind of fanatic. I learned a lot about the game though from not being able to rely on my athleticism. You have to think more and find angles.

@ NYBalla, I understand the feeling man, I had to focus on losing weight and a good deal of it was muscle mass because it was too much on my knees at that time.

I also used to tape some weights to my shoes and do some exercises to strengten the muscles on my knees.

nateoak, I am glad you are able to recover man.
