Injuries

Sup guys. This thread is concerning..... my fear.

In October 2010, I fractured my fibula and spent 8 weeks on crutches. Shortly after recovering, I played basketball and fractured it again. Spent another 6 weeks on crutches/walking boot. As of now, I am fully recovered... I've been lifting and getting back in shape. I've actually been playing a few pick up games here and there.

But everytime I think about playing... I can't help but get really scared... because in my mind I know that anything can happen at anytime... I could get hurt again. And it's not worth it. But basketball is my 1st love and I want to play again.

So basically... I'm asking, how do I get over this fear? How did you guys deal with playing basketball again after coming off a big injury?

I

I haven't been through anything like that, but I have severly injured a few friends while playing basketball.

Not sure how that's helpful. Your topic just looked lonely.

I too would be hesitant to swim in the ocean five months after being bit by a shark.

just gotta forget about it

I dislocated my thumb 6 times in 8 weeks playing hoops, but I kept getting back out there. I also fractured my ankle once. Sat out 4 weeks, returned and reinjured myself. Sat out 2 weeks and returned again.

Last summer I broke my fibula while rock climbing on a mountaineering trip. 5 days later I was back mountaineering in a walking boot with trekking poles. 4 weeks from the day I broke my leg, I took a fall on steep terrain and tore my lateral meniscus. I had to trek out 3.5 miles to the closest road. It was excruciating! But 2 days later I was back in the field. Sometimes you have to deal with a little (or a lot of) pain. Its part of life... If you really love playing hoops, you'll have to get over the fear and just get out there and play again. Everyone is different, so you'll have to figure out how to deal with it yourself, man. Stay positive. Good luck!

You have to give yourself

You have to give yourself enough time to heal and rehab from your injury. Once you have fully healed to the point you can play like you want, it is all mental and you just have to work back from it one step at a time. The first thing though to give yourself some courage to play like you were before is to rehab and do all the things needed to get your leg stronger than when it was before the injury. A lot of time injuries reveal to us that we may not have the strength we need in a certain area.
