If you could turn back time during a draft night for your favorite team, what year would you do it and how would you draft if you were the GM?

I have two for my Bulls:

    2006

I would have kept LaMarcus Aldridge as the pick. My logic at that time was, they lost Eddy Curry via trade. He was a potential offensive threat down low. The Bulls were in need of size and they could have used that pick to draft a big man. LA was the logical choice for me and 12 years later, I still am mad at the Bulls for that dumb decision.

    2014

I would have kept the 16th and 19th pick rather than trade it for Doug McDermott.

Jusuf Nurkic would have been an interesting big man who could learn under Pau Gasol and Joakim Noah. Gary Harris is an outstanding player with combo guard skills and was better athletically than Doug. These two guys would have been a good fit under Thibs. They would have had more impact for the team than McDermott.

No question I would go back in time to the 2013 draft and draft Giannis with the 13th pick instead of Kelly Olynyk.  A Kyrie/Brown/Tatum/Giannis/Horford lineup would be so versatile in the hands of Brad Stevens.

To be fair I love where the Pacers are right now and definitely prefer Oladipo than George, but 2011 draft we keep our pick which was Kawhi Leonard.
A wing duo of George and Leonard would’ve been insane and the most talent Indiana would have probably had on a team ever, we may have made it to an NBA finals or 2 with that duo.

1984 – keep our pick and with the 2nd pick that Portland used to draft Sam Bowie we draft Michael Jordan.

     Two picks:

Kuzma instead of Terrance F,who will be nice but will take more time to full reach his ceiling vs Kuzma who could have maybe contributed now.

Mitch Mcgary over Rodney hood-instead we were forced to play Kyle waste of space singler…

    and

Cameron payne over either Bobby portis or Terry Rozier…

     Simple one here

2003 my pistons take Wade or Bosh over Darko.  How many championships would that be in the motor city ?

Definitely in 2012 where we select Draymond Green with the 27th pick. The big 3 in their primes plus Draymond…scary stuff right here

    In my lifetime:

In 2005 we chose Marvin Williams 2nd overall, ahead of CP3 and Deron Williams when we desperately needed a point guard and not another forward. Not only was CP3 BPA, but an amazing fit as well!. Set the franchise back 10 years EASILY.

In 2006 we chose Sheldon Williams 5th overall, ahead of Brandon Roy, Randy Foye, Rudy Gaye, and JJ Redick. We had Joe Johnson at the time, so I understand not wanting to take a guard but this is why you ALWAYS ALWAYS ALWAYS take BPA!

If we nail both of those picks and have CP3 and Roy as our backcourt, we’re probably a top 3 team in the east! Both of those guys weren’t sort of “in hindsight” players like Kuzma has become and many passed on. CP3 was drafted 2 picks later and Roy just a single pick later.

Now you may understand why I’m terrified for my Hawks this draft and know how desperately we need to choose correctly.

They’ve had horrible picks at that time. Shelden Williams wasn’t top 5 caliber in my books and I was right. I thought Marv had superstar potential written all over him but boy, was I wrong. They need to get their head right because their lottery picks in the past have been so-so. Other than Josh Smith and Al Horford, they haven’t really done well lottery wise.

Sheldon Williams married Candice Parker. In my book he gets a pass for being a day one bust.

The Marvin Williams and Sheldon Williams picks were considered bad even when they happened.

Marvin Williams was one of those upside selections that cost GMs their jobs like it eventually did with Billy Knight. The Hawks needed a point guard and there were two great possibilities in CP3 and Deron Williams. The team already took Josh Childress and Josh Smith the year before so the last thing they needed was a forward.

The Sheldon Williams selection was just completely stupid. No one other than the Hawks had him going that high. At the very least they could have traded down if they were enamored with him.

Is this actually Marcus fizer? If so, I hate to say it but the bulls taking fizer 4th in 2000 over mike miller who went one pick later was pretty bad.

Anyway, the lakers actually have drafted pretty well over the years and there really aren’t too many regrettable picks I can think of. In 2015, the choice was essentially between Okafor and Russell, and they no doubt made the right choice in Russell. Of course, if we could do it over again I’m sure they would have taken Porzingis though.

The really regrettable move was trading away 2 draft picks in 2012 for a 38 year old Steve Nash, who was barely able to stay on the floor in his 3 years in LA. I guess the silver lining is the protection they put on those picks so we were still able to keep our picks from 2015-17.

As a Suns fan – trading the rights to Rondo in 2006 wasn’t smart, him learning behind Nash and becoming part of a D’Antoni system would have been great. Plus his defence in play offs would have been a huge asset.

Chicago passing on LMA, Darko being taken 2 in 2003, Portland taking Oden over Durrant and Bowie over MJ have been discussed above.

Bad choices one year can lead to other choices the next few years so they sometimes balance out.

Bucks and Hawks passing on D-Will and CP3 in 2005 is interesting as today the logic would have been to have paired Michael Redd and Joe Johnson who Hawks acquired around that time with a top PG. Plus Marvin Williams and Andrew Bogut have both had decent NBA careers so weren’t bust picks like others.

Giannis was passed over by Dallas, Utah and Boston were next to pick after he was drafted, so some very good front offices passed over an elite player.

Can’t really do anything about it, but Devin Booker going the pick before Cam Payne still stings. We were so close

Trading the Eric Bledsoe pick for Cole Aldrich was pretty bad

I remember David Lee, Monta Ellis, Lou Williams, Jarret Jack, Nate Robinson, Hakim Warrick, CJ Miles & Ersan Illyasova, Marcin Gortat (later acquired by Orlando) being on the board. Any of those dudes would have been better than a guy who never suited ONE game for the Magic. Huge blunder

Celtics take Jimmy Butler over Brooks who they traded for Johnson. I say this one because the Celtics almost took Butler. This isn’t purely hindsight like the Greek Freak who they just weren’t going to draft. This is a perfect example of drafting for need over best player. Danny learned a big lesson with that pick.

     Utah

Not too many mistakes with them but we did pick Trey Lyles one pick before Devin Booker when a decent 2 guard was something we needed. Hayward could have easily played the 3.

Dante Exum… well… now that I look back at it, nobody in the top 10 really turned out to be special besides Embiid. I guess I’d rather wait him out and see if he could finally become a starting caliber PG offensively.
