I hate to do it
But I have to...my enthusiasm for Memphis Basketball is over the top right now. They have won 15 in a row including two straight very convincing wins over the other top 2 teams in C-USA. They have actually learned how to pass the ball around. They look like they are really developing as a team right now.
The starting backcourt is making the team what it right now with Joe Jackson and Geron Johnson balling. Jackson on the year is averaging 13.9 ppg on nearly 55% from the field, nearly 50% from deep and a team high 4.8 apg. Geron Johnson has actually become the teams best player as of late. I'd never even heard of the dude, but he's from JUCO and he's been awesome lately. Last 5 games he's putting up big numbers: 16.2 ppg 7 rpg 5.8 apg 53% from the field and 43% from deep.
The rest of the team is stepping up too. Adonis Thomas looks solid for the first time all year, Chris Crawford has found his stroke and is great off the bench. DJ Stephens has been unreal. He's averaging 6.5 rpg and 2.3 bpg in around 20 mpg and he's only 6'5.
I made a thread earlier this year about how I thought Pastner should be fired. Since that day they are 19-1 and have me believing in them stronger then I have in years. Do I think they are a title contender? Hell no. But this could be a team that makes a nice little run and ruins a few brackets and I'm completely fine with that.
Oh and next year they have the #3 recruiting class coming in and to my knowledge only lose Stephens as a key contributor. The future looks bright!
Sucks how Barton is out for basically a month and a half though, should be back right before the tournament if everything goes right for him. Even though he is a bench player you lose some depth and experience to finish the CUSA season and conference tournament.
Earlier in the year this would have concerned me but Geron Johnson has essentially stolen most of his minutes and now it just leaves more minutes for Jackson/Johnson/Crawford. I like Barton but he's not much of a loss at this point.
Stephens has been their Emotional leader this year...Still suck that they allowed Louisville to come back and win that game....
What has gotten into Joe Jackson? He has been one of the best guards in the nation after about the 5th or 6th game of the year. He is stroking from deep, taking care of the ball, and just really playing well overall. I think he had 21 pts 10 assts last night. He has taken a lot of heat the past few years, so i'm glad he is redeeming himself.
He's taking better shots, shooting the ball much better (.653 TS is pretty sick) and he doesn't have to worry about running the team by himself with Geron Johnson out there with him.
I hate to do it too Y2G, as they ARE playing better, but just wait til they play a ranked opponent. Conference USA is really weak.
Haha yeah I know it's no coincidence that USM and maybe UCF are the only decent teams they have played during their winning streak. There are some good signs though. 27 and 28 assists the past two games and they really blew UCF off the floor last night. Geron Johnson's play has given me hope too, he's really good.
Shouldn't hate to do this man. I haven't caught them this year (working a lot) but from what you are saying they sound pretty damn dangerous. I'll try and catch a few games so I can give my 2 cents instead of uses posts like this haha
I'm just warning you. Kuran Iverson is gonna be a huge bust. Until this year, he played at a private school sort of near my high school. Tallest kid on our team was like 6'5", and Kuran could still only muster up like 12 points and 10 rebounds.
