Anton123ParticipantI watched the Houston game yesterday, meant to post the topic straight away but there were problems with the site. These are just some thoughts on the Houston young players
Jordan Hill was most impressive yesterday, he still has terrific size and athletisism, but seems to have worked on his game a lot. He had 17 points and 13 rebounds in just 29 minutes, the impressive thing was that he did it without a single dunk. He has worked on a midrange game, though it’s still quite average. Offensively he doesn’t have a lot of moves, but is a good finisher around the hoop. This year he’ll be starting for the Rockets and he will get all the time he needs. I see him averaging around 10 and 9 in about 25 minutes in the regular season. His free throw shooting looked improved too.
Hasheem Thabeet impressed in the first 3-4 minutes of play, had some nice finishes, a hustle play and a block. He did then look like the normal bad player he is in the next 15 minutes. He is still slow, foul prone and awkward. He’ll get some time, but I don’t see him doing anything special.
Morris was bad, he is quite small, played bad defense, made 5 fouls in 23 mins and missed all his shots. It is just his first ever game, so we shouldn’t judge him yet.
Greg Smith is just big and strong, he outjumped the Spurs on some boards and finished some simple layups. Didn’t show anything special but looked better than Thabeet.
Terrence Williams looked awful in the first half, missed his shots, had silly turnovers, but then he did really bounce back in the second half and showed off his good vision, nice finishing ability and good rebounding skills. Overall a good game for T-Will.
Johhny Flynn was very fast and erratic. He didn’t play much, but showed off a nice passing and rebounding ability. Though he looked awkward attacking the hoop, which is strange since I always thought of him as a scoring guard.
I hope someone finds this interesting. What do you expect from these players?
On a side note, San Antonio’s rookies struggled, although I liked how Joseph played, he looked very under control. Leonard was pretty invisible apart from one nice steal.

The8thDeadlySinParticipantDragic also looked good in that game. Patterson was out and he will be the first big off the bench. Courtney Lee didn’t play much but everyone knows he is good and Buddinger is a great athlete and it shows. Should be an interesting season for the Rockets. Also, I thin Kevin is going to be a great coach.

Anton123ParticipantYeah, Dragic looked very good, fast, athletic but also under control. I hope he has a good season.
Budinger seemed to play very well, made threes, rebounded, I was quite surprised when I saw that he was just 2-6 with four TOs

bdiddy5115ParticipantAs much as I love our young guys, it may be best to let a few go (both for their own good, and ours). That being said, it’s great watching them in preseason, with everyone getting PT.
– One of Dragic/Flynn is going to be on the bench, and the other won’t get that much time due to Lowry’s emergence as a legit PG. I liked both a lot before coming to Houston, so it’d stink to see either rotting away on the bench. Flynn is still getting his legs/feel back since his serious surgery, so I’d give Dragic the edge. Him and Lowry actually played quite well together.
– Williams is great when he settles down. I’m actually pretty convinced he has ADHD, which would explain why he presses so much when he gets in. But he’s so gifted, not only physically, but in his ability to create. Him and McHale seem to get along (which is promising due to his past failed relationships with coaches), so we all hope to see him on the court this year. He’s one of those types that needs PT to get into game-rhythm.
– Budinger is solid, but unspectacular. He’s an asset when his jumper is falling, but his lack of defensive ability and ball-handling ability stunt his growth. I hope Williams gets more time than he does.
– I was bothered by the Morris pick, mostly because I watched him at KU, and saw little to suggest him transitioning to the SF spot. He’s an undersized faceup PF, one with average athleticism and short arms at that. I’m not wishing on him to fail, but I’d be surprised if he ever "broke out".
– Hill surprised me. Many of us Rockets fans gave up on him, due to his seemingly non-existant passion to improve and his inconsistency. He looked bigger, more focused, and more patient (still could improve there). Although he’s ideally a PF, he has grown to where he won’t be a liability at the C, where he seems in-line to start. Then again, everytime in the past when he played well, he followed it up with a no-show. So I won’t keep my hopes up.
– Thabeet didn’t look bad, surprisingly. He needs time to grow, as well. He’ll foul out if he plays more than 20 mpg, but his size is an asset regardless, especially on a team without Cs.
– Lee is solid as usual. Patterson was hurt.

Anton123ParticipantActually I think they’ll play with a starting line up of Lowry-Martin-Budinger-Scola-Hill, so both Dragic and Flynn will be coming off the bench. That’s why I totally agree that one of them should be let go, I’d choose to stick with Dragic if I were the Rockets.
Hill is bigger than half the league’s starting centre’s so I think he won’t have much of a problemplaying at the 5. Although if Thabeet does improve and they can sometimes go with Hill-Thabeet combo, that would be huge defensively. But Scola is their best player anyway, too bad he sucks at defense.

bdiddy5115ParticipantYeah sorry that’s what I meant…As in Lowry will be getting about 36 mpg, the backup PG will get only 12, and the other will be stuck on the pine – not playing at all.

sammybuckeye13ParticipantThat Marcus Morris pick was so puzzling…

BothTeamsPlayedHardParticipantThere was nothing puzzling about the Morris pick for those few hours Houston had dealt for Pau. The problem for them is a million 3s and 4s don’t give them a center who can play.

Lotto StudParticipantLast year there was no reason to why T-Will got no burn!!! Dude was coming up and making the most of his opportunities in Jersey. It’s just sad he got the backseat role when he can hold his own. I really don’t see him being there long when they "have" no use for him, he can flourish elsewhere as a role player. I just hope he is not getting "black-balled" by Avery.

rileymcshea3ParticipantHonestly I don’t like the rockets youngsters I think there pretty over rated and don’t have any real potential. The only people I really think are keepers on the rockets are Lowry(obviously) , Martin(very underrated scorer),scola( getting older though), parsons(I think will be a solid player in the league and is another gordan Hayward), and dragic( I like this guy alot and will be a solid backup pg) besides that I’m not really buying into any of the forwards t-Williams and buddinger are just another dunk and a jumpshot not true basketball players and the post men arent impressing to me
