valentineSomebody just posted about low IQ players. Who are the high IQ players? The first two that come to mind are Pau Gasol and LeBron James.

Meditated StatesParticipantI feel bad for anyone who has to coach him. Rondo was smarter than Rivers. Karl said it already he ends up challenging them as coaches because he knows XO basketball. He sees everything.

T RexRondo’s bbiq is overrated. Being smart in basketball also means controlling emotions and ego, and being smart enough to know that what is good for you isn’t the same thing as what is good for the team.
He’s like a special ed kid who has a special gift, like many/most autistic people.

herceg_bukuParticipantI am not gonna post the obvious high IQ players because its redundant. I am going to post a few under the radar high IQ players that caught my attention: Andrew Bogut, Al Jefferson, Paul Pierce, Luis Scola, David West, Devy…

HitsterParticipantDirk Nowitzki, Tim Duncan would spring to mind also, guys who can stay in the NBA that long have to rely on their experience and court placement as they get older.
CP3 would be another guy who I’d add for consideration.

Dazzling Dunks and Basketball BloopersParticipantWhen I think of "high iq" players I think of guys that almost see the game in slow motion. They can read how plays will develop 2-3 steps in advance, know the tendencies of their teammates and opponents and where they will likely be or react to a given situation.
Bird and magic were probably the 2 best I’ve ever seen in this regard. Steve Nash is up there as well.
In a different respect, jordan absolutely mastered the mental aspect of the game like no other player in history, as far as consistently finding ways to motivate himself and gain an edge on his opponent through any means necessary. Reggie Miller was one of the best in this regard as well.

ZachAttackParticipantI think that John Stockton was a very high IQ player. I think he is extremely underrated when it comes to that. He isn’t even talked about when it comes to high IQ. Just look at his assist to turnover ratio or his steals. You’ll see he had a very high IQ when you look at the stats.

jcotingParticipantAsides from the obvious players (All-Stars), some guys who come to mind are smart but either undersized or unathlethic point guards like Andre Miller, Steve Blake, Kirk Hinrich, Matthew Dellavedova (even though a lot of people hate him), Luke Ridnour. One other guy who I think also has a high basketball IQ is Deandre Jordan. Sure he makes some boneheaded plays and can’t make a FT to save his life, but he knows his basketball limits and maximizes his potential by reading the spaces on the floor, smartly boxing out on the boards, and waiting for the right time to either catch an ally-oop or putting back a missed shot.

Memphis MadnessParticipantSteph Curry’s has to be off the charts. Great shooting and scoring. Knows when to drive and when to pass. Maybe it comes to easy, but they guy knows what he is doing.
I would say that Draymond Green has a pretty high basketball IQ, too. He has a varied skill set and maximizes his talent.
Have to mention Kobe too. HIGH basketball IQ. Possibly one of the highest, even if his Emotional IQ isn’t exactly sky high.
Dirk, too. Maximizes his skill set. Plays within himself. Led his team to a title. Maybe not the TOUGHEST guys out there, but a great guy on offense who knows when to pick his spots.
Tyson Chandler: prototype pick and roll defense-first center. Doesn’t chase blocked shots.
Marc Gasol does some of everything on the floor. Kind of a coach on the floor.
Guys who have HIGH basketball IQ’s but are selfish combined with a lower emotional IQ: Rajon Rondo, DeMarcus Cousins, and arguably, Carmelo Anthony.

HitsterParticipantI know he’s retired now but Grant Hill must have had one of the highest basketball IQ’s of players in the recent era.
On a lesser scale Nene at the Wizards has always been highly rated by John Wall who was amazed what a difference Nene made to the team after having JaVale McGee on the team.

Memphis MadnessParticipantI would put Kobe’s basketball IQ over LeBron’s.
To me, if you are a GREAT player then one of the things about having a HIGH basketball IQ is mastering your position.
Bill Russell did it better than anyone. Oscar Robertson. Wilt figured it out here and there. Magic. Larry Bird. Of course, Michael Jordan. Tim Duncan mastered the big man game. Best power forward ever, and one of the best ever at center when he lines up that way.
Kobe MASTERED the shooting guard position with even more range than MJ.
Not sure LeBron has MASTERED any position. He is still a hybrid forward. A cross between a drive/dish point guard, athletic, slashing small forward, and bulldozing power forward.
For that reason, it might be hard to put LeBron ahead of MJ, Bill Russell, and maybe even Magic and Kobe.
Kareem had a sky high IQ all the way around. Possibly lacking though in Emotional IQ. Wilt might have been bored at times. Gotta go with Bill Russell as the highest basketball IQ big man in NBA history followed by Tim Duncan. Honorable mention to other bigs: Bill Walton, Dennis Rodman, then after that Charles Barkley, Karl Malone, Dirk Nowitzki…
Highest basketball IQ small forwards: Larry Bird by far. Then I would go with Scottie Pippen. After that, LeBron.
Guards: MJ one. Magic probably 2. The Big O, Jerry West, Kobe, John Stockton, Isiah Thomas, Jason Kidd, Steve Nash, Bob Cousy. I would also assume Bill Bradley and Walt Frazier. I think that Manu Ginobili really gets it. No way that Steph Curry’s basketball IQ isn’t really way up there. I would put Pete Maravich up there too, but his emotional IQ was low (from what I read).

tuck243ParticipantHigh IQ player = any player that’s able to have success while not being physical dominating (majority of the time).
Any player that can do both is considered a "superstar".
It’s very subjective. How many explosive guards we see come into the league? How many have success like Derrick Rose? Is he not a high IQ guy? Melo isn’t that athletic, yet he scores like no ones business. Is he not a high IQ guy? See… It’s subjective…
Someone said Dirk… He’s a guy for majority of his career didn’t rebound or play defense. He just had an unstoppable fadeaway and a great shot. That’s about it… He always had a great team around him. Should that count as a high IQ guy? See… It’s subjective.
