from Sports Illustrated, I cant post the link because of spam filter

German point guard Dennis Schröder wants to start over Jeff Teague in the Atlanta Hawks lineup or he will explore other teams, he tells the German magazine Bild. “My goal is the starting spot. If it does not go forward next season, you have to talk to people and look for other opportunities,” Schröder said.

Schröder, 22, is coming off a EuroBasket campaign in which he averaged 18.2 points, 7.5 assists, and 3.9 rebounds for 36-minute averages. Schröder started 10 games for the Hawks last season and averaged 10.0 points, 4.1 assists and 2.1 rebounds. Teague is coming off an All-Star season in which he started 72 of his 73 games on the year. Teague posted a career-high 17.6 points per game to go along with his 7.0 assists and 1.7 steals averaged. Teague also contributed 16.8 points and 6.7 assists per game in the playoffs.

Schröder and Teague remain under contract with the Hawks through the next two seasons Schröder could become a restricted free agent in 2018.

So if you were the Hawks, what would you do? Teague is an all star and is only 27, Schroeder is younger but still raw at 22. Who would you trade? Hawks arent getting the East Championship any time soon

I’d give it another year. Schroder has no leverage going into a 3rd year in a rookie contract, so what he says doesn’t matter. Teague is still under a relatively cheap contract for a starting point.  They can look to flip Teague, who despite being an All-Star last year is nothing special, when he’s expiring.  Then start the transition to Schroder who has more potential, next year or sometime during it.  Unless Teague makes another jump this year, which I don’t expect,  I don’t see them being committed to him long-term.

Jeff Teague is their starting PG and has just come off an All Star season, so his spot should be fairly secure. The Hawks might look to eventually play Schroder alongside Teague as Korver is 34 now and might be best used as an impact shooter off the bench.

The issue might be does Schroder want to be the main ball handler as we can assume Teague would still be want to be as he is the man is posession.

The Hawks are wanting to be win now so I assume Teague stays in situ and Schroder might actually have more trade value.

A team like Philly still needs a PG and with a possible high pick due from Lakers and others from Miami and Thunder then they could give Atlanta a nice trade package for Schroder.

He’s a good player. I just don’t know if I’d be this bold about starting. Gotta be okay with the team and where you stand on the roster. I’ll give him props for willing to do whatever it takes to be a starter, just don’t believe this is the right way to go about it. Could mean that he won’t play in the NBA again!!! Not many teams like it when a player insists that he starts. Most teams want you to work from within and prove you are better than their best player. Not saying he’s better or worse than Jeff Teague, I just don’t believe this is best way to go about it.

I agree w/ the Post written above that w/ Scroder going into year 3 of his contract he does not have much Leverage… But maybe they can move Scroeder to a Rebuilding team searching for a Point Guard in return for an established NBA Vet who could help Atlanta in the right Now…

I think Schroeder would be a nice fit in Milwaukee… At the very least he would really push MCW & the Bucks would have a nice change of pace w/ Schroder…. & the Bucks can give Tyler Ennis who was Drafted in the same spot one year later….

Or maybe, they could pry Joe Johnson loose from the Nets for a young Rebuilding piece like Schroder??? I originally thought that Phila would luv to plug Schroder in at the PG spot, but I don’t think Phila has any pieces that could help the Hawks right now…..

In general though, once you have a guy who wants to go elsewhere – unless he is a star – it’s usually best to get something for him before the whole league knows he wants out & his value is diminished….

The Hawks would not give up Schroder for below market price. As NBA junkie says above, ideally they want a proven player for him, ideally a combo guard or a swing man.

I suggested Philly as they have possible high picks due and they need a PG. But taking on board what NBA junkie said, the Hawks could bounce any picks they get for Schroder to get an established player in. A likely top 10 draft pick has a fairly high trade value.
