     Amigos,

It’s been a while since I’ve posted a trade idea, so here goes. Fyi, Hawks fan here.

    Hawks get: Ibaka

    Thunder get: Horford

Both bigs are comparable, Horford gets the edge offensively, Ibaka defensively

Thunder: Horford becomes a legit 3rd scorer, something Okc hasn’t had since Harden as Waiters isn’t consistent. Kanter has been better, but Horford can step up and be the #2 guy when needed, Kanter not so much. I think this is huge, as Okc should look to give Russ and KD rests throughout the season. Russ plays 120% every game and you want KD to remain healthy. Add that Billy Donovan coached Al at UF, they may be able to resign him at a team friendly deal this Summer. The cap is going up, doesn’t change the fact that Okc is a small market team.

Atlanta: Gets Ibaka. His plus defense is huge as he brings the post defense we lack. He’s more athletic than Al, which will allow us to run more as we do have a bunch of athletic guys. While Serge isn’t as talented offensively as Al, it isn’t that big of an issue since Al isn’t asked to create, but more play within the system. Serge can do the same as he brings a solid outside game as well. The plus for Serge, I expect him to get more shots here than he does in Okc, hopefully making him happier.

*** One big question mark is his passing, as Al is very good at this and it’s important in our system. How would you guys rate Ibaka’s passing, bad, average, good?***

    Thoughts?

The Thunder would have to add something to sweeten the pot because Al Horford is better than Serge Ibaka in every category except blocks and rebounds.

Not giving you negatives, but both players are more valuable for their current team. The Thunder need a fast, active shot-blocker do doesn’t need any touches on offense. The Hawks need a do-it-all-guy (fits their philosophy), we can provide defense, some points, and smart play.

So, Al is a free agent coming up.  Ibaka isn’t.  This doesn’t work for that alone.

As a Thunder fan I say thanks, but no thanks. Stat-wise they’re moderately similar:

    • They have an identical FG%
    • While both are good shooters, Ibaka has more range and a higher 3P%
    • They have virtually identical RPG
    • Horford has a better FT%, though both are good for big men
    • Ibaka is in another league defensively compared to Horford
    • Horford is unarguably a better passer than Ibaka, averages 2 more APG
    • Horford has 2 more PPG than Ibaka

When it comes down to it, they have eerily similar stats. All Horford brings to the table is 12% more FT%, 2 more APG, and 2 more PPG; None of which is going to put the Thunder in a better situation than they already are, especially considering they lose some defense. As for Horford being a true 3rd scoring option I will have to disagree; Horford only averages 2 more PPG and his scoring competition is Millsap & Teague, not Durant & Westbrook. So when you look at it that way he’s really not a clear & cut better scorer than Ibaka.

This is the kicker, Horford will be 30 next year, he is going to be past his prime and beginning the decline, Ibaka will be 27 next year just starting to enter his prime. Why trade for an older guy that won’t really give you anything more than what you already have? Makes zero sense.

That being said, I can see how Ibaka would really help the Hawks, with Millsap balling like he is Horford is no longer the go-to guy he used to be, so of course they would like to line Millsap up with a defensive star like Ibaka, those two would probably be a very good fit together. Also they’d get younger as I mentioned above. So this trade to me, is in the Hawks favour; it would improve the Hawks while not really helping or hurting the Thunder.

Fairly good trade idea, salaries match quite well. Horford is probably the better player but Ibaka is younger and is under contract for another year.

The issues I’d have are :-

The Hawks don’t really have a volume scorer although they score well as a team does Ibaka’s superior defence outweigh the extra scoring they lose if Horford moves on. Ibaka is a PF but at Hawks he’d surely have to play C alongside Millsap unless he was brought from the bench and Splitter or even Tavares longer term played C.

At Thunder Horford would be 3rd option at best so does he bring anything extra to the table to the scoring say Kanter gives and they lose Ibaka’s defence. Horford is out of contract next summer and will likely be minimum of $18 to $20 million a year for any new deal. With KD needing to be offered a mega deal, Adams and possibly Waiters to renew then Thunder would be in stupid luxury tax levels. Also if Horford moves on they have lost a year of Ibaka.
