Derrick Rose is playing lights out and as much as I think Dwight Howard should get the MVP this year I wouldn't complain if Rose got it.
That being said Legler calling Rose the most dominant point guard since Magic and using stats to try and prove his point is an overstatement. Rose's numbers (and affect on the game) are still a hair under Gary Payton's best season in 1999-2000; 24.2 PPG, 8.9 APG, 6.5 RPG, 1.9 SPG and 45 FG%, not to mention lock down defence as opposed to Derricks average D.
Gary Payton was 31 years old that season. Rose is 22 and putting up 25-4-8. I think the Magic comparison was way off, even in terms of dominance.
The thing about Rose is the way he has improved his game at such an incredible rate. He hit 16 3's in each of his first 2 seasons. This season, he already has 112. (find me another guy who improved that much) His percentage isn't that impressive at 33% but you know he will work on that in the off season. His mid range jumper is money already and now defenders have no idea how to play him.
His FT% was 78% coming into this season. He is at 85% right now and has dhot 90% since the All Star break and is getting to the line 2.3 more times than last season. He has as many blocks this season (44) as he had his first 2 seasons combined (45). His 77 steals are also a career high. His defense isn't as bad as most think.
His most improved area is his confidence though. He played almost passive his first 2 seasons but this year he just takes over games...every game it seems.
dwight should not get the mvp
Rose being named the NBA's MVP is no longer a question of if... Just when.
1. Bulls two and a half games up on Boston for the top seed in the East. Who predicted that? All we heard about was the Heat winning 72 and Boston. Nobody predicted the Bulls to get the top spot. There weren't too many people who even predicted the Bulls would be better than Orlando.
2. Bulls top seed in the East despite missing tons of games from Boozer and Noah. Yes, you can give credit to team defense/rebounding, but Rose's offensive impact just can't be ignored. He hasn't been too bad defensively this season either. He's improving there.
3. Rose improved three point shot. We all know the numbers by now and have seen that he's become a very good three-point shooter. You can't play off of him like you can a Rondo or even a Westbrook.
4. Rose top ten in scoring and assists. The only player in the NBA to accomplish this.
5. Rose one of the best closers in the NBA. He seems to do this every single game.
He's your MVP hands down and he's the best point guard in the NBA right now.
i still dont think he is the best player in the leagu. I would say 3rd behind kobe and lebron. I dont say this to be a hater becasu ei have no problem with rose winning mvp, but i saw somehere else where people were saying he was hands down the best in the game and i dont think being mvp means you are automatically the best in the league.
I fully agree with Llperez that although Rose should be MVP, you cannot call him the best player in the league. When LeBron was MVP he was probably the best player in the league and likewise AI and Kobe perhaps but I would not say Steve Nash was the best player in the league when he was a double MVP for example.
D-Rose must be in the top 5 or so players in the league along with Kobe,LeBron, KD, Dwight Howard and D-Wade for example. That's 6 names without really thinking about it and I've ignored several other franchise players as well.
For the people who say that D-Rose hasn't won a play off series yet, the MVP award is for the regular season.
"At the end of the day, it's up to the players whether or not they want to buy into a coach's system/philosophy, but let's give Thibs some credit. He's done a great job. He's gained the respect of the players. He's holding everyone accountable. He's a great defensive coach.
And I know Deng finally being healthy has a lot to do with his play, but I like the way Thibs is using him this season."
Mike Brown was a great defensive coach too. He also gained respect, and a lot of people threw a ton of love towards him, in 2007 for the growth and development of Boobie Gibson, Varejao, and Sasha Pavlovic.
I don't think anyone is arguing Rose is the best player in the NBA. They are saying best point guard.
This Bulls team is actually eerily similar to Lebron's cavs team. 1 dynamic offensive player with the team playing good defense and grabbing alot of rebounds to win a bunch of games in the regular season. We'll see how it works in the playoffs
Other than defense and rebounding, I don't really see the similarities between Rose's Bulls and LeBron's Cavs.
The Bulls have a legit low post scorer and 20/10 guy in Carlos Boozer, while the Cavs didn't. LeBron's Cavs were primarily a jumpshooting team. They didn't have anybody they could throw the ball to in the post and get a bucket on a consistent basis.
Boozer is a legit second option who can get his own offense and is more than capable of having monster games. The Cavs had Mo Williams and Antawn Jamison.
This Bulls team just has a supporting cast that's better in my opinion.
Best scoring guard in the League right now and one of the best closeres easily.
