I see similarities between Prince and Barnes. Sure, most of you kids know him as the slow aging veteran for Minnesota and Memphis, but back in his peak he was quite a good handy player.

Both guys are 6-8″ SF. Both went to top schools (Kentucky – North Carolina). Both are fourth options, who can knock down the open 3 on championship teams (billups, rip, sheed) (curry, klay, green) that fit a system and know their role well. Both players would struggle be a first or second option.

Prince was a quiet achiever, he was their glue guy who went under appreciated by most fans outside of Detroit. He was an excellent defender who could knock down the open three and even had some time as their point forward as he could handle and pass the ball.

Although pencil thin, Prince actually played 6 straight seasons of not missing a game (unheard of these days). His Pistons dynasty made it to 6 straight Eastern Conference Finals, with Prince often being matched up against a prime Lebron, Pierce and Deng.

He was a 14-5-3 guy most of his career. 2006 was his best year, four pistons made the all-star game and quite a few thought Prince deserved to make it also. He was so well respected and valued, the Pistons passed on Carmelo Anthony in the 2003 draft because of Prince.

Barnes is a 12-5-2 guy on the warriors. You could argue that he is a slightly better shooter than Prince, but a prime Prince was the better defender, ball handler and passer. I also think Barnes % is good due to Curry and Klay getting a lot of attention.

I have read that Barnes might be getting a max contract this summer. Barnes, like Prince is best in a system – a good fourth option without being the main focus of the offense.

I like Barnes with the Warriors. He hasn’t been thrown to the wolves like most top 10 picks. Instead he has taken his time to develop, while not being rushed into big minutes and big expectations. He fits in well with their team and system.

The Warriors aren’t going to pay him $20mill. He is just not worth it, they could easily get another veteran for much cheaper who would be able to fit in and do the sort of things Barnes does. If he does take a big pay day from another team, he will struggle. No team is going to pay $20 mill for a third or fourth option, they are going to want 20ppg – first or second scoring option which Barnes is not (not on a decent team anyway).

At this stage I have Prince ahead of Barnes, I don’t think that will change….

They both are versitile wings. Both play the same role for their respective team.

Maybe I haven’t watched Barnes close enough (or I am getting nostalgic for a player past his prime), but I think Prince is a much better defender. If I needed a wing to guard Leonard, Durant, Anthony, George and as you meantioned, Lebron… Then I clearly take Prince.

I also am willing to guess that Barnes had a better jumpshot at age 14 than Prince had at any point in his career. That thing is ugly!

Teams like the Lakers and Nets could go higher than the Warriors want to go with Barnes.

Will be interesting to see if he likes being a piece of something special or is craving a bigger role (and more money).

Barnes always seemed like high character guy to me. And I think that with the right team, he could be a number 1 or 2 option (not saying that team would dominate). Sadly, the Warriors are stacked and while he is still an integral part of that team’s production, his ceiling on that team is where he is now.

outside of their position and size, i dont think theyre very similar players.

now, maybe the game has changed. and obviously barnes is in the GS offense. offensively tayshaun could play point forward when needed. he was a smarter player who would also use his size to his advantage whenever he could, backing down the smaller player.

Barnes is more athletic, and again plays in the GSW offense, but neither his post game nor passing was as advanced as tay’s.

They’re different types of players to me.  Tay was more of a swiss army knife, defensive leaning player while I think Barnes has more potential as a scorer while just being decent defensively and in terms of overall floor game.  I think Barnes has untapped potential in the face up area because of his strength, high release, jab step game, pull up game and powerful first step which I think would be maximized in the mid post area as opposed to from the 3 pt line.  Small-ish sample size, but so far this year he’s shooting 56% from mid (53% on pull ups).  He just hasn’t been able to showcase that ability because of GSW’s 4 out 1 in style as well as where he is in the pecking order.  On a team that still utilizes the mid-post/FT line extended area (and yes those teams still exist) I think he could be a high teens to 20 ppg scorer. When I think of Barnes and what he can become, I don’t think of players like Tay bc they’re so different.  A player like Sean Elliott does come to mind though.  I think Barnes can become what Sean did before his illness.

Barnes is incredibly athletic with an insane vertical lol. He can beat you off the dribble to attack the basket or step back midrange jumper that is money. Also since he can play the 4, he’s strong enough to post up other forwards and shoot a turnaround fadaway on the block. Unfortunately, GSW’s system doesn’t really let Barnes flourish and Brandon Rush improving a lot this year doesn’t help. I expect him to sign a big deal with another team this offseason. He’ll be every team’s second choice if they can’t get Durant.

I agree Barnes is a better athlete compared to Prince but Prince is longer.  Barnes has solid quickness and if he can get down hill going to the rim is explosive.  Wouldn’t call him elite athletically for the NBA but would call him above average.  I still liken the comparisons to Sean Elliot and Michael Finley for Barnes that were common when he came out.  Barnes is a 18-20 PPG scorer on a team where he can take 14-18 shots per game.  Prince was never going to be relied upon to be that much of a scorer.  I think Barnes can be a good #2 on a playoff team or a good #3 scorer on a title contending team in his prime.  You are spot on with Barnes ability to play the 4 in space and pace lineups also make him more attractive as a FA.

They are not very similar players in terms of style but they are similar in terms of the roles they play for very good teams.

In the orig post I never said their playing style is anything alike.

You could make many of the same observations about Luol Deng, Rodney Hood or Tobias Harris.

6’8 SF’s from good schools etc
