Against all odds Ron Baker and Fred Van Vleet are currently on NBA rosters after being relatively low ranked recruits, playing 4 years for Gregg Marshall at Wichita State, and catching on as undrafted free agents.

I think Gregg Marshall as a couple of kids that could follow down that path, as WSU has shown the ability to cultivate guards, and get them to maximize their potential.

Landry Shamet is a 6’4” point with a beautiful stroke, and the ability to play in the pick and roll. As a RS freshman, he’s averaging 10.7 points and 3.1 assists, but is nailing over 40% of his 3’s and 80’s of his free throws. His stature and jump shot first jumped out at me, but he’s a pretty controlled kid in the P/R and definitely has some translatable abilities that could be honed to an NBA level in a few more years of college ball.

Austin Reaves is a 6’5” combo guard, who currently only plays about 13.5 minutes for them as a true freshman, but this kid is insanely productive when he’s on the court. His averages of 5.1 points 2.2 rebounds and 1.5 assists (also a 50% clip from 3 on 2 attempts per game) give him per 40 minute averages of 15.1 / 6.5 / 4.4. Reaves is even more raw, but he’s a pretty dynamic player, and can really stroke it from long range. He’s really wiry, and will need to add weight, but is surprisingly athletic.

I really think these guys could be next in line for another great Gregg Marshall backcourt, and while not high level prospects, they’re worthy of keeping an eye on for the next few seasons. Both players seem like guys that could be in the mix in the 2nd round, or still as free agents after 4 years at Wichita State.

Don’t think its hyperbole to suggest that if Marshall stays at Wichita, they could be the next Gonzaga.

Every year a mid major team pops up and we ask "are they the next Gonzaga"

I tend to think Wichita is that if Marshall stays there. He’s as good as it gets. Not surprising to see him developing good players and a solid pipeline of talent.

I haven’t seen Wichita state play yet this season so I don’t know much about either player. I do know that Marshall does an outstanding job developing players though and recruiting to his system. I will definitely have to make it a point to check them out next time they are nationally televised.

The backcourt of van vleet and Baker was an absolute joy to watch for 4 years. I’m not surprised either player found their way onto an NBA roster. Hopefully both will be able to stick around.
