tblazer_NZParticipantHope he doesn’t get injured.
http://espn.go.com/nba/story/_/id/11472697/greg-monroe-detroit-pistons-signs-qualifying-offer
It looks like he will have more suitors next year in FA with big time franchises like NYK in play.

TheArtistPaysthePriceParticipantR U telling me there is not one team with 9 million dollar to offer on a one year deal to him as a restricted free agent?

benny15Participanti think its more of whats the incentive to do so? you offer him a one year 9 mill deal and detroit would likely match. so what do you get out of it? do you do it to get a thank you from monroe and david falk? or do you do it just so that someone in your position will have to spend 9 mill dollars.
its a one a year deal, its not like it would affect detroits cap situation next year(paul milsap portland signing), and it wasnt done early in this off-season to affect it this year(landry fields toronto signing).

TheArtistPaysthePriceParticipantThen if they want to tank they can still do so at the deadline and trade them away if its not matched. If it is match and a team like Philly has two weaker competitors to deal with at the deadline. Neither guy is playing out the whole year in their respective cities there has been to much bad blood. Imagine what a team like Orlando or Sacremnto would give up to become instant playoff contenders. Othering Bledsoe and Monroe at the same time could completely change a teams dynamics. They could also help after next year in sign and trade scenarios.
Philly and Detriot would have less flexibility at the deadline if they match because they would be at or over the cap in Detroits case and that is one less(er) competitor.

christebasParticipantAs for a potential injury to Monroe, I’m sure he purchased (as most players do) a 1 year insurance policy through Lloyd’s of London or a similar compnay in case of injury that would pay him at least the amount of a max contract or more should an injury prevent him from playing again.
It’s pretty incredible that a throw-back, extremely talented though big-guy like Monroe didn’t even get a whiff in restricted free agency, while Hawyward and Parsons get max deals. This is very telling how modern day GM’s are building their franchises with a clear empahsis on wings, while the classic big man has fallen out of favor among most teams. There was a tremendous amount of cap dollars to be spent this summer, and the best offer Monroe (reportedly) was able to get was 50mil from the Pistons.
Had Philly been able to draft Wiggins or Parker, it seems like the Sixers might of offered Monroe a max deal to pair him upfront with Noel. Of course with Embid/Noel on the roster it would be over-kill to go after Monroe at this point.
One last point regarding Monroe signing the 5th year "qualifed offer," is he’s now able to veto any trade Detroit might try to attempt to include him in for the entire season. He’s got a great deal of options next year, so it should be interesting where he lands next off-season.

tblazer_NZParticipantI don’t see how he would be worth more than Al Hereford who is make 12m a year.
I cannot tell you why no one would give him 9m for one year since Jordan Hill got that.

tblazer_NZParticipantI didn’t notice that my tablet changed the spelling of Al Horford to Al Hereford.
Al Horford is a 20/10 type of guy who is a better defender and shoots a higher percentage. He is a triple threat on the court with his ability to pass for the assist, drive to the basket or shoot from a variety of places on the court.

theprophetParticipanthorford’s better. you pay monroe, you still get a good player but you are taking the risk of "upside".

christebasParticipantsupply/demand of league wide cap space, in this case, massive supply with more to come with the new TV contract under the CBA in 2016. Is Hayward or Parsons worth anything close to a max contract in a normal year? no way.. In the past, max contracts were reserved for the very top tier NBA players such Mello, Lebron, Durant, Paul etc.
Don’t get me wrong, guys have been overpaid before but this is getting out of control when the agents for Ricky Rubio and Eric Bledsoe are demanding max deals as well.. Several guys were overpaid this summer when compared to previous seasons (perhaps the last 5 years or more).
If Philly drafted Wiggins or Parked you can bet they would of thrown a max deal at Monroe. Monroe was in the unfortunate postion of having to deal with a free agency period where teams with big cap room (Philly, Utah, Dallas for example) didn’t need the services of a FC at that price..

festar35ParticipantTrade Hibbert and West for cap room, then after this season should throw money at Monroe as starting C going forward.
Would be a great fit with PG and the two could form a very nice inside and outside punch.

JoeWolf1He’d be great in the triangle in New York. He’s a really good post passer, and an emerging mid range shooter (41% from 10-16 feet in 2013-14). That could be a great destination for his style of play.

Sharp ShooterParticipantMonroe will be traded soon. The pistons don’t plan on losing him with nothing in return. It may be before the season or it may be at the trade deadline…but he’ll be traded.

christebasParticipantMonroe has the right to veto any trade which he will likely do if the Pistons try and deal him. Because his rookie deal was up (4 years), he accepted a new 1 year contract or "qualifying offer", and if traded, would lose his Bird rights.

Jester87ParticipantReports are he probably would have turned down even a max offer from Detroit, or at least it’s what they say here: probasketballtalk.nbcsports.com/2014/09/07/report-strong-chance-greg-monroe-would-have-declined-max-contract-offer-from-pistons/
Honestly I have no idea what his or his agent’s plans are, I mean they obviously want to have full control on Monroe’s future and it likely means he wants out of Detroit. He probably knows Detroit is going to build the team of their future around Drummond and so it might not be the best team for his development, but I have a hard time thinking of anyone willing to go broke on him next year, especially considering that his situation might well influence his playing time/role in the team.

HitsterParticipantWe don’t know what sort of offers he may have got, if teams thought that Detroit would have matched they might have been reluctant to commit time and effort trying for a player they were unlikely to obtain. Also if they maxed him out and Detroit didn’t match, they may have used up valuable cap space and possibly overpaid for him.
I’m surprised no team looked at dangling a fairly luctrative 2 year or so deal his way, would Detroit have committed to match a longer term shorter deal I wonder. Also someone like Sam Hinkie at 76ers could have thought outside the box and given Monroe say a $12 million 1 year deal with a clear understanding that as soon as he was available to be traded they would look at options to move him onto a team of his liking. This way Monroe fills in for Embiid, he gets loads of shots at 76ers so puts up good production and really putting himself in the shop window. This gets suitors calling knowing if they snag Monroe they have his Bird rights, Hinkie pulls a trade gets a pick back and Monroe gets to a team of choice and is moved before deadline day so Philly can then continue in full tank mode.
