Watching the G’Town-Syracuse game. It’s hard to say how to evaluate Monroe considering he went up against Cuse’s 2-3 zone. The couple of times he was in the post he looked good though. Thoughts?

He just fouled out. Not very impressive today. Wesley Johnson is dominating all of a sudden.

Yes he has. This game did a 180. Wesley played great. Though, I like Turner more probably because Turner’s take over of game’s is more noticeable.

As of now, I would take Turner over Johnson.

Monroe is an interesting, albeit inconsistent, player. He still has a long time to solidify his position as a top-10 talent.

I think Monroe is a PF with great handles. I really don’t think he can play Center. Though, the center position no longer requires being 7 foot and being able to be dominant in the post. If a player has that though then by all means they’ll take you. I would like to see more true centers even if they are 6-11 260 but crash the boards, Charles Oakley like (I know he was a PF).

Monroe wasn’t impressive tonight, but I still think he can be a Pau Gasol type player…Maybe not quite as successful, but close. Maybe LaMarcus Aldridge is more accurate…

I agree Monroe wasn’t impressive.  Games like this is exactly why you see him projected as a mid 1st round pick in a lot of mock drafts.

I was more focused on Wesley Johnson this game though.  Everybody sees the positives so I won’t really talk about everything he does well.  He did win the opening toss up against Greg Monroe which was impressive ha. A couple things that I really didn’t like about Wesley:

his ball handling is below average.  Does he ever really cross some one over & take it to the rim for an aggressive layup/dunk?

his defense for the most part looked pathetic.  He seems very lazy, rarely has his long arms up. He seemed to move pretty slow laterally. Multiple times he allowed someone to easily get past him. He isn’t that quick to go out & contest jumpshots either. Overall his IQ on defense is lacking too. He has the tools to become at least a good defender if he wants to be.

He makes plays sometimes by virtue of his athleticism, but for the most part he falls asleep on D. He still reminds me of Danny Granger. He plays exactly like Granger did when he was a rookie though, and for someone as old as he is, he seems to have a decent deal of upside…

I wouldn’t say his defense is pathetic. He gets a lot of blocks and steals, rebounds extreamely well, is willing to take charges/hit the floor and is part of one of the best zone defenses in college basketball. I disagree that he is lacking lateral quickness. Other than that it is very hard to judge his defensive abilities because of the Syracuse zone.

as a big man its hard to get numbers against a 2-3 zone. tht defense is more for shooters. when a big guy gets it he either has topass out of shoot a quick shot because he has to deal with the center plus a foward and sometimes a guard drops down. its like playing against a double and sometimes triple team

if greg monroe gets drafted by the jazz via knicks pick, I see monroe being an allstar in 3 years playing in the utah jazz system!

Greg Monroe would be a great fit for the Jazz system, but I would rather the Jazz draft a low-post, defense-minded shot-blocker. Something we’ve been missing since Ostertag retired.

If the Jazz go big, I want Favors, Davis, Aldrich or Varnado. In that order.

Cousins + Sloan = Mass Loss of Life

    Don’t count on it. Haha

I forgot about Whiteside. He might be my number 5. Motiejunas should have some consideration too, he can be Memo’s replacement in a few years.

    Pedo Bear? puh.

Anyways, I really like Johnson’s game and Monroe’s. Johnson can be an elite sg/sf combo guard, the only thing is his falling asleep on D like Gatorheels mentioned(though I disagree about his footspeed). Monroe is very interesting too, I like him and his game.

I didnt see much of the game but when i did watch, i came away very annoyed. I don’t understand why the G’town guards dont pass Monroe the ball…they’ve done it in the past and they did it tonight. Especially tonight because anybody will tell you, to beat a 23 zone, get the ball to the high post and the short corner. Every time i saw Monroe get the ball at the high post, good things happened, he’d either dump it down to the flashing guy from the short corner, or he could kick it to open shooters…it frustrated me like nothing else that they didnt get him the ball more. He’s got the perfect skillset to give Syracuse fits, but they didnt utilize it. I really thought he would have a big game tonight and Georgetown would be more competitive.

Georgetown is a team that can seriously get the final 4 this year, but if they don’t fee Monroe, they will be done before the 1st weekend is over. He’s their best player, and he makes their guards better. He didn’t do alot tonight though.

I was probably too harsh on Wesley’s defense.  I guess I just see his potential that he could develop into a very solid defender if he put more effort into it.  Even Jay Bilas said during the game that he was surprised Georgetown didn’t attack the side of the zone that Wesley Johnson was on since he is a somewhat weak defender.

I could be wrong about Johnson’s lateral quickness being a little slow. It could just appear to be slow on defense from a direct result of Wesley just being lazy.

I think Georgetown’s chances are simple, they aren’t good against zone defenses. Old Dominion gave them a world of problems. Syracuse’s zone was incredible yesterday. Last year, it was the same story last year when teams zoned the Hoyas with Baylor, Cincy, and the rest. It is an offensive system based off movement and working a defense. It doesn’t have the same impact when teams sag off to keep the ball from going into the middle and they just swing the ball around the perimeter. In the tournament, I’d be surprised if they make it past a team with a really good, well-developed zone scheme.

Now for Monroe, at last check it isn’t breaking news that big men struggle with good zones unless they get on the offensive glass. This wasn’t the first game where a zone has really limited him, and he is far from the only big man who doesn’t have big games against zones. If anyone wants to expound long term impact from his struggles against the zone, then feel free. The guy is still the most uniquely talented big man in the NCAAs, and yesterday really doesn’t change that. I’m pretty sure every NBA team has a zone breaker or two on their roster to force a team out.

i dont think he’s slow or lazy. it may look that way because cuse plays zone so he doesnt have to chase a guy around all the time. you can relax more in a zone then a man to man. and yah the gtown guards didnt make good decisions playing against that zone. if you dont shoot well against the zone nor get the ball into the high post then youre in trouble
