I’m not sure if you guys feel the same way, but when I watched him play last year, he just seemed like a special player to me.  I remember before he was drafted that people had said he had unbelievable talent but he didn’t give a lot of effort all the time.  Last year he hustled as much as any big man in the league, and was a terrific rebounder.  He came on very strong in the second half of the year and it seemed as though there were no plays run for him.  He seems very intelligent and has a great feel for the game.  He’s actually an OK athlete (despite scouts saying he was glued to the floor), and can run the break.  He might also become the best passing bigman in the league once Tim Duncan hangs it up.  In a time when the league is lacking skilled big man, he could be an all-star for many years to come.

He’s a nice player, highly skilled. Warriors should have taken him over Udoh.

I hope and pray Udoh becomes a defensive beast, because he is so raw on the offensive end.

Detroit’s is getting good picks the last 2 years with Monroe last year, and this years with Knight at 8 and Singler in the 2nd round.

Monroe is a beast. In the second half of the season he was morphed from serviceable (6.1 and 5.3 in December) to awesome (13.5, 9.2, 1.6 steals, 57% FG, 80% FT) in March. In the 2011 portion of the season he probably avg’d 12-8.5-1.4 steals-1 block, not bad for someone who turned 21 a month after the season ended.

Based on those numbers, I wouldn’t be surprised if he improved to 15 and 10 this year (he was also absurdly efficient with steals, he averaged 1.2 in 27 minutes and had a lot of 3 or 4 steal games).  In ESPN’s re-draft at the end of the season I’m pretty sure he was #2 after Wall. The jury’s still out on Favors and Cousins, but you’ve gotta think the 6ers, Wolves and Warriors are all kicking themselves for passing on him.

I hate the Udoh pick. I wish we would have gone with Greg Monroe, or even Larry Sanders.

Monroe is one of the best passing bigs I’ve seen drafted in recent years and with Big Ben helping him develop defensively, I could see him having a real breakout year this season if he gets increased minutes. His work ethic has improved as high flyer said perhaps due to Big Ben, Prince etc and he certainly put himself about a lot more than I had seen before. Unlike other players he does not have to rely on just his athletic ability as he has a better basketball IQ than a lot of frontcourters and can use this to his advantage.

Greg Monroe has unreal potential… Greg and Brandon Knight combine for easily one of the best young cores in the league.. and you got to imagine Pistons end up with another Top5 pick next season..

Monroe has potential to average 18 Points, 11 Rebounds, 4 Assists, 2 Blocks a Game!

I agree with symbol. Greg Monroe is obviously a great talent, but part of the reason why he put up impressive numbers was due to the Pistons almost total lack of presence in the paint. They were last in blocks, and the second worst rebounding team.

Chris Wilcox came on strong at the end of the season when it did not matter, and I even heard he only tried hard at the end of the season to secure a new contract. I doubt Detroit resigns him after his time there.

While Ben Wallace is old, he was sadly one of the Pistons best bigs in the paint all the while being injured for a good chunk of the season. That led to the Pistons playing Tayshaun Prince at PF, ugly yes.

Jason Maxiel saw his minutes get cut as well and did not produce this season. Austin Daye is actually a pretty good rebounder for a 6’11 guy who plays the perimiter (Charlie V syndrome).

And let’s not even put the words rebounds and Charlie V in the same sentence; whoops, I just did.

EDIT: I almost forgot about Jonas Jerebko, who was actually one of the Pistons better rebounders before he got injured for the entire 2010 season. With him coming back, I like the Pistons chances to improve (barring potential injuries of course).

Mesee said exactly when I was was thinking, as a Warriors fan, I didn’t want Udoh, he was a 23 three year old man who wasn’t going to improve that much. I would have much rather had Monroe, Cole Aldrich, Larry Snaders, or even. Jerome Jordan.

It was great on draft day last year when Greg Monroe fell to the Pistons. They didn’t work him out or even interview him, and Monroe was surprised he landed in Detroit.

Most of the mocks I saw had Udoh going to Detroit.

But let’s not trash Ekpe Udoh just yet. He was injured most of last season and played solid defense for a player who missed so many games and came back late. Passing on Monroe was a mistake though.

I guess the Warriors felt confident enough with David Lee?

yea i was dumbfounded when the Warriors picked Udoh instead of Monroe. But not nearly as dumbfounded as in 09 when the Knicks chose Jordan Hill and then Derozan goes to toronto the next pick and the pick after jennings goes to the bukcs

Monroe is a beast though.. I saw him in hs and watched him throughout his years at Georgetown. He could easily end up averaging 5 assists a game or more since defenses will collapse on him in the post and hes smart enough in that situation to look for the open man not to mention hes a great passer to begin with. I remember years back a writer comparing him to Duncan in passing ability, but in general he just reminds me of Duncan. Quiet and reserved letting his game speak for itself doing everything well on the court rebounding, passing, shooting, although hes not as polished in the post as Duncan was this early on.

But back to the Knicks pick that year I mean wow. You could not have fucked up a pick more than that. Hill is a complete bust and Derozan and Jennings have the potential to be great players maybe even all stars at some point, and its not like either havent produced to give some thought to dispute that idea.

With Monroe the Pistons could run plays through him or certainly use the pick and role perhaps more as they go forward. Ideally they can perhaps get another young big via the draft next year.

I said during the draft last year that Monroe was the 3rd prospect in the draft, behind Wall and Turner (jury still out on Evan being better). I’ve liked Monroe in his Soph. year, even though G’Town underachieved. He was skilled and improved his rebounding and D. I think he’s similar to a Pau Gasol, definitely a lesser version though. He should be the Pistons PF/C for the next decade, and he could be an All-Star in time. He also plays a style that ages gracefully, so he should play at a pretty high level for a long time.

Monroe is a mix between Odom and Gasol IMO. I’ve been a fan since highschool. Freshman year had me questioning a little bit how good he would be, but damn he looked good. he needs morer touches from the high post. Let him pay a Vlade type role an initiator/facilitator type.

To be honest, he reminds me of Andray Blatche. Not a knock on Monroe though. I think Andray can be a special player.

But I think Monroe will be an All-Star. He’s very skilled like Blatche, has great handles for a guys his size like Blatche, both are great passers, and they’re the same height and have the same body types. Monroe’s 6’11" right?

Blatche is more of a combo forward than Monroe. Lamar Odom is too.

Monroe played most of his time at the C spot when I watched him play last year, even though he might be more ideal as a PF. I don’t think he’s much like Blatche though, Blatche is a face-up guy who kind of is a blackhole. Monroe is a more unselfish player than him. And Monroe can’t function as a point forward like Odom did. I dont think either are similar to Monroe really

i was shocked to when the warriors got udoh instead of monroe

cuz the good ole’ lord knew i did not want udoh as a piston

monroe started out really slow… i was expecting that tho, and i expected him to eventually improve more and more but last yr from the 2nd half on, he tore it up at some points…

didnt expect that kind of improvement, hes very talented, unselfish, not a little girl, can rebound just fine

pistons future isnt as dim as ppll think… we have a log jam with our guards, but our front court will improve

cant forget about jerebko, he had a really good rookie yr in 2010, daye shows flahses tho hes somewhat soft… but i like his talent, he has it in him

the pistons didnt seem motivated at all last yr with kuester as the coach, hopefully that will change with a guy these players want to play for… the young guys i know will play for anybody, but the vets like prince, rip, charlie V, and BG didnt seem to really give a duece at times last yr

and ppll need to stop bagging Ben Gordon man…. his minutes last yr were not consistent with stupid ass kuester… when given minutes his production will greatly increase

as for Charlive V, as indy bball would say, soft as charmin… rip only played well when he wanted to, prince had a pretty good yr ( cant believe hes already 31, weighs the same since a rookie, has never averaged over a block per game with his 7’4” wingspan, and is not a good rebounder at all for a SF with that length)  and tmac played pretty well in spurts

we need a superstar calabier player or a guy who can be the face of the franchise at least, stuckey is not that guy

like him as a player, but he isnt joe johnson good or sumthin…. i loved the knight pick, liked the singler pick to

hopefully pistons fans can hear "DETROOOITTTT BASKETBALLLLLL!!" again with some puropose

It’s probably going to be important this year for Detroit to decide if Monroe plays long term as a PF or a C as going forward with him in one role they can then concentrate on filling the other position or using the existing roster to do so.

Personally I see Monroe as a maybe more a PF long term so if they could get in the right C then they have their front court set long term.
