tyrekeevansParticipantJazz rookie forward Gordon Hayward was a viable candidate for the Development League just two weeks ago. Now, the ninth overall pick of the 2010 NBA Draft is playing like a legitimate lottery selection, and he has earned the on-the-court confidence and trust of All-Star guard Deron Williams.
Hayward has played in all 12 minutes of the fourth quarter in five consecutive games. He has recorded double figures in scoring in three straight contests. And he had his second-best performance of the season Saturday during a home victory against Memphis, recording 13 points on 6-of-10 shooting and four rebounds in 30 minutes.
Prior to his breakout performance Wednesday on the road versus the Los Angeles Clippers — when he set season highs in points (17), made 3-pointers (three) and minutes (44) — the 20-year-old rookie had only played more than 20 minutes in a single game three times this season. But in Utah’s past three contests, Hayward has accomplished that feat each night, totaling 100 minutes during the stretch and working his way deeper into the Jazz’s rotation. With C.J. Miles dealing with the flu, Hayward was the first Utah player off the bench in the win against Memphis.
Jazz coach Jerry Sloan was the first to publicly stand behind the rookie, using him as a late-game insertion during Utah’s comeback road victory Dec. 22 versus Minnesota. Meanwhile, Williams acknowledged that his own belief in Hayward has recently increased, stating that the former Butler standout is a much-improved player compared with his October self.
Hayward said that basketball is a game based upon confidence.
“With each game it’s going to get better and better, and I’m going to get better and better,” said Hayward, who acknowledged that the floor is beginning to open up for him. “I try to improve every day, and that’s what I’m going to go out there and do.”

bigblackNbeautifulParticipantHe is perfect for the jazz organization. and even if he doesnt have georges or henrys upside, he plays the type of ball that the jazz system is based off of. I hope he can continue this. and that we get him mins on the court. because if he can continue to be a solid late game player it takes of the pressure of bell and adds a dimension to this team. Also it would help our second unit loads! since outside of miles they havent produced well.

sheltwon3ParticipantHe stilll was not worth a lottery pick but it is good to see him player better than before because it was outright shameful for him to be a first round pick the way he was looking

montauriush4ParticipantIf he keep playing like this coach Sloan is going to put him in the starting line up over ak47 or raja bell. People was calling him a bust now he is showing why he was a lottery pick.I think he is worth a lottery pick.

bigblackNbeautifulParticipantI understand if you think it was a bad lotto pick. But a bad first rounder the way he was playing is ridiculous. who would you take ahead of him from these first rounders if you are the jazz….
George, Aldrich, Henry,Davis, Patterson, Sanders, Babbit, Seraphin, Bledso, Bradley, Brackins, Elliot Williams, Booker, Damion James, Pondexter, Dominique Jones, Crawford, Vasquez, Orton, Lazar hayward
You could argue george, aldrich, henry, or davis.
Honestly with Al though there wouldnt be time for davis, and memo is a fine back up center. so aldrich is out of the question. So that leaves you with George and Henry.
George may have the upside…. but he has been lost on the pacers, not the jazz but the pacer bench (no offense pacer fans but the jazz are a better team as of now)
Henry starts for the grizz. and is a solid player and a year younger than hayward. But idk I guess in the long run Hayward could develop in to a more well rounded player than henry.
So I am sticking with Hayward.

Meditated StatesParticipantHe will get better as the season goes. He can score and we will see him connect with Williams more and more as he understands the offense better. He will pan out to be a real solid pick.

SwatLakeCityParticipantEarlier I had my doubts about this kid and I was praying that he would get sent to the D-league where I felt that he could gain some confidence and develop his game and come back more polished ala Wesley Matthews.
But then all of a sudden on Wednesday against the Clippers, he proved me wrong, and has since then been backing it up with more good performances. Looks like I was wrong about this kid. So glad he found his niche. And I hope that soon Utah will have a new bench lineup that will look something like this: Price, Miles, Hayward, Elson, Fes. Evans, and Watson can be used as reserves but not get very many minutes. It looks like Memo is hurt again with back spasms so that is why Elson is there and not Memo.
Good job Hayward, Keep up the good work. By next season we could see this guy starting at the 2 guard possibly the 3.

sheltwon3ParticipantHow can you sent there and define how good a player is by how much time they are getting, there are other factors. Utah is gettin Hayward minutes. I am sure a lot of the guys you mentioned would put up solid numbers if given minutes. A lot of people though Aminu was going to take a while to develop then he started getting minutues and that changed. Bledsoe got minutes and even started and put up decent numbers. Hayward was getting minutes early on and he did not play well, he is just now playing well and I do think Utah system is right for him. That does not give you reason after a few good games to say that he is better than he is. I understand from you guys posts that you really want him to succeed. That causes a bias in your opinion. I am glad he is playing better and I expected it but he is still a role player. I remember when Kapono had bigger nights than Hayward and now he is on someone’s bench and not playing. I mentioned Kapono because the Jazz are using him more as a shooter type in that offense which is something Kapono is. Hayward may able to do more things than Kapono but still his role in that offense will be similiar to that of a spot up shooter. Hayward will have to show me more before I believe that he is better than guys take ahead on him just because now he is actually producing in the minutes he is given.

sheltwon3Participanti said earlier he was not playing like a 1st round pick but obviously with his improvement he should have been a 1st rounder which i said all along but not a lottery pick which I will continue to stand by regardless of the minus points i get from fanboys.

IndianaBasketballParticipantI don’t even think I have to say I told you so. I just don’t understand why people continue to sleep on Hayward.
As I’ve been saying since summer league… Just give him time. I mean, he’s only 20 years old and is going to experience a learning curve just like any other rookie. He’ll play better as he gains more confidence and strength. There’s no questioning the skill set that he has or the toughness that he plays with. His worth ethic is also tremendous.
Like I said before the season… He’ll be in the regular rotation by the middle of the season and even have a chance to start.
And lol @sheltwon3. Do you still want to stand by your statement that you’d have taken like 20 something players over Hayward? You’re wrong about this kid… He’s going to prove you wrong. IF you stop hating and just watch him, you’ll see that he’s going to be a good player.
And his role will be absolutely nothing like Kapono. He’s not just a spot up shooter. He can put the ball on the floor. He can handle. He can pass. He rebounds. He can take it to the rim and finish (see the two dunks vs Memphis). He’s also not a bad defender. Once he gets stronger, he’ll be a respectable defender. You’re just wrong dude…
