When Gobert was drafted last year I thought he had a chance to be a solid 4th big. However, last year he was surprisingly productive when he got minutes. When he was sent to the D League he usually played like the best player on the floor. I remember during an interview he was frustrated (not angry) at being sent to the D League and he said he never wanted to play lesser competition and that it was his goal to be an all star in a few years. Even though I didn’t think it possible, it was clear he was being sincere — he clearly intended to achieve that goal.

In the first summer league game he looked good. However, tonight he really shined:

    13 points on 6/6 shooting, 9 rebounds, 1 assist, 5 blocks, 3 fouls, 1 TO and a +23 +/- in just 23 minutes on the floor.

And that block on the Greek Freak… wow. This kid is going to make it in this league. He looks stronger and dedicated to being a real player. Last game he got after Exum to get the passes in higher so he could go straight to the rim. He is finding himself as a player and looks to be a serious disrupting force in limited minutes this year.

I’m not saying he will be an all star, but barring injury I think Rudy will have a very solid career–as a starter.

Also, shout out to Hood, who may have been the only player to out shine Gobert tonight. After an abysmal 1-10 from deep in game one, he hit 7-10 tonight:

    29 points on 11/16 shooting, 3 rebounds, 5 assists, 2 steals and +18 in +/- in 27 minutes.

Many scouts said Hood was the best player on the floor at the combine and Jazz reporters said he was the best player on the floor during their initial scrimage. I think this guy was undervalued in the draft. I expect solid production even as a rookie.

In other news Exum was just OK. He was fast, smooth and showed a few good things on D, but did not shoot great. Still, the team was clearly better when he was on the floor as he pulls massive attention from the D.

The Jazz have an exciting core of young players. It will be fun watching them develop.

Hood’s bad shooting the other night must have been just due to nerves. His shooting stroke is just so sweet! Pure gold! Plus, he can handle the ball and even slash to the basket and his athleticism is somewhat underrated. I think he can have contributions off the bench right away for the Jazz.

Gobert’s development was stinted by Corbin last year, he just refused to play him, especially towards the end of the season. It was ridiculous. I think he can seriously push Kanter for the starting spot this year. His size is not something a lot of people can offer and the best thing is it comes with some skills. He still needs to add some bulk and toughness for the next level, though.

About Exum… again he showed some flashes in the first half but he seemed like he gassed by the start of the second half and started deferring in offense and wasn’t as aggressive as last game. I think his conditioning is the first thing he needs to seriously put some work on, even before his shot.

Gobert and Hood were expecially fun to watch last night, Exum was to passive and I agree he is in poor shape and gets tired and winded, I still love his court vision and passing , hope he comes out in more of an attack mode tonight. Gobert is such a game changer when he plays like he did last night, he played stronger more aggressive, he still needs more strength but he’s improving, Hood looked great, smooth, under control, he should get rotation minutes right away. All 3 of these kds could make a difference this year, Hood’s shooting is something we have needed, Exums passing makes the game easier for teammate, him and Hayward will create easier shots for teammates. If Gorbert can continue to improve and get stronger he could be the most impactful player of the 3, his defense is a game changer. It will be fun to see how these kids fit in with the rest of the team.
