In a NBA basketball game, if you shoot a higher percentage in two of the three types of shot categories, you usually win the ball game.

Today some thing quite rare happened.

The thunder shot FG 50% 3P 41% FT 84% against the Nets FG 44% 3P 38% FT 77%  and despite also have 2 more assists, they ended the game with a L.

    Just thought i’d share it!

That is where %s can be deceiving.  Althought the Nets shot a slightly lower % from the FT line, they got there 12 more times and made 8 more FTs than the Thunder.  Big difference in a 2 point game.

and rebounds are the biggest keys to seeing who win games…

I read a few years ago, whichever team gets more rebounds is usually the winner 90% of the time (might be higher).

There are three categories that usually decide who will win a game.  FG%, rebounds, and turnovers.

If you are able to win two of those three categories, you will win the game 95% of the time.  The only time you won’t, is if there is one glaring and unpredictable stat for either team.  For example, you could win two of those statistical categories but if the other team made 15 three pointers, then it’s anyone’s game.

    Just last night:

    • GS won FG% and rebounds; won the game
    • CLE won rebounds and TO; won the game
    • CHI won FG% and TO; won the game
    • BRK won FG% and TO; won the game
    • NYK won FG% and reb; won the game
    • MEM won FG% and reb; won the game
    • UTA won FG% and TO; won the game
    • POR won FG% and reb; won the game
    • PHI won FG% and TO; won the game

As you can see, that applied to each game last night.  It works 90%-95% of the time, unless the opposing team has a huge glaring stat that overrides this.

Why does this work, you ask?  Well, if you shoot a higher %, the odds are in your favor to win the game.  But you combine that with the fact that you got more shot attempts and it almost guarantees that you’ll win the game.  By rebounding better and taking care of the ball, you are making sure you’re taking more shots than the opponent.  You combine taking more shots while shooting a good % and the game is nearly yours.

Keep in mind that your FG% and the rebound margin often go hand in hand.  The majority of rebounds in a game are defensive rebounds.  If your team shoots a high FG% it minimizes the opportunities for defensive rebounds by the other team, thus increasing your chance of winning the rebound battle.
