Smart’s game didn’t change much from his freshman year, as he saw moderate upticks in his production levels as a sophomore. I think his shooting won’t be a huge issue going forward thanks in part to his ability to move without the ball and a solid post-up game for a guard. Defense is definitely a plus as well.

HomerKangParticipantTo me, regardless of how he performed at OSU, Marcus Smart is the next James Harden, if not better. A definite franchise-changer. You can book it !!!

Kevin6CDParticipantis definitely a much better three point shooter, but I think a lot of the other parts of their games compare well.

HomerKangParticipantSmart has already answered about his 3 pt shootings in interviews, saying something like he will make it a mission to improve upon it and all. Give him a year or two in the league, and I bet we’ll see his 3PT fg% be at an acceptable level. I remembered when Harden first started at OKC, his 3PT % wasn’t all that hot either.

Kevin6CDParticipantshot 37.5% from three his rookie year…

HomerKangParticipantYeah, but he didn’t get as much playing time coz of KD and Westbrook. So, to me, that percentage is kinda hard from which to base a definite conclusion of how good he really is as a 3 pt threat. But Marcus Smart will most likely be expected to start right off the bat. And I wouldn’t be surprised at all if he will shoot above 30% from downtown next year, being his rookie year. But, we’ll see.

Magic JordanParticipantSmart projects to be an elite defender, Harden is an elite offender. How are they similar?

rickyfutureagentParticipantI don’t really see the Harden comparison. Smart will one day be an elite defender of both PGs and SGs, he is a very willing passer and LOOKS to create shots for others… Something Harden simply does not do. They both slash very effectively to the rim, but while Harden’s only objective on a drive is to score, Smart is able to score and also dish it to the open player on the wing.
Although I am not a huge Smart fan, I love his game the more I talk about it. His game is that of a bulldog who is out hustling with an only goal of winning. He is a fiery competitor who will be a great team leader at the next level.
We are all very focused on comparing him to players currently in the league, but I feel as though Smart is just something we don’t see right now in the NBA. If I had to compare him, he’d compare well to a less athletic Dwyane Wade.

JoeWolf1Smart is a bull of a defender, and in my opinion, he has immense defensive potential. He’s annoying, he’s stronger than most everyone at his position, he flops, blocks shots on the weak side. I saw a lot of him over the last 2 years, and I think he’s a 3rd option NBA player, who hangs his hat on defense…that’s nothing like James Harden.

Kevin6CDParticipantthat the Harden comparison absolutely didn’t come from me. That came from the guy up the thread. Only way I see them as comparable is the knack for getting to the FT line and ability to finish in the paint, and body type. That’s about it.

JoeWolf1I know, man. Just adding my two cents on the Harden matter, because this isn’t the first time I’ve seen it here. A lot of people dont watch NCAA ball, so a lot of weird stuff gets thrown around. I thought your report was solid and very thorough.

WalkaFlockaParticipantMaybe it’s just me but I see Smart and Oladipo as very similar. Oladipo is a 6’4", 215 lb 2-guard who can also play a little PG, whereas Smart is a ripped 6’4" 225 lb PG that may translate better as a 2 guard in the league.
They both pride themselves on their defensive prowess and working hard, along with having a gritty intensity during games. Oladipo had concerns about his shooting going into the draft much like Smart does, but they both love to get to the rack and get fouled. They both exhibit well above average athleticism, but I would say Oladipo has better straight line speed from end to end on a fast break, but that comes with the leaner body he has as compared to Smart.

JoeWolf1I’d love to see them together. I think Smart would flourish in a backcourt like Pheonix’s. Paired with Dipo, he could play point, but also be with another playmaker.
