Basketball In EuropeFormer France international Frédéric Weis in action during EuroBasket 2007
Former France center Frederic Weis has decided to retire from the game because of knee problems.
The giant center, who last represented Les Bleus at EuroBasket 2007 in Spain, is just 33 years old.
On the website of Limoges, Weis said: “I’ve had a lot, too many even, recurrent knee problems and we haven’t found any solutions.
“The doctor advised me to leave it at that.
“We tried a number of different treatments and I’ve actually already gone over the quota (of treatments) by a mile so it’s enough.”
Weis, who was capped 100 times by France, is the second prominent national team player from France to call it quits this month.
Laurent Sciarra, the high-scoring guard in the silver-medal winning side of the 2000 Olympic team, had been on the books of Pau-Orthez but retired on March 1 at the age of 37.
He was capped 112 times by France.
Sciarra was terrific at the Sydney Games, pouring in 16 points and handing out seven assists as France beat Australia to reach the gold-medal game.
In his two games against the United States, both American wins, Sciarra averaged 20 points.

Freddie Weis is of course most famous for “Le Dunk De La Mort” (The Dunk of Death) aka “The Lipton” that Vince Carter did which officially ended any hope of him ever showing his face in the NBA. He was a 7’2 French Center who got some hype as a draft prospect. Weis was the 15th pick in the 1999 Draft by the New York Knicks, famously chosen one pick in front of hometown favorite Ron Artest. However, his retirement just leads to more reasons to play maybe the greatest dunk clip of all time…….

mikeyvthedonParticipantForgetting the fact he probably offensively fouled him by basically b-itch slapping in mid air, this dunk was EPIC! It is at least the best one I can think of on this level. Vince’s dunk on Mourning I could watch again and again, but this one was special. It is just hard to believe like Freddie stands there like a deer in headlights and just allows it too happen. Maybe his retiring means big things for the Knicks? Like a curse being lifted since he no longer will be playing basketball?

HitsterParticipantAmazing dunk by Vinsanity at his peak, like others I can watch it over and over again. I wonder how much that moment made Weis to decide never to come to the NBA!
