I was just watching some pretty bad flops at another site one of which was the lebron James flop from the eastern finals where rose reaches in for the ball after lebron grabs a rebound and lebron falls to the ground grabbin his eye and rose is left complaining against the foul call while replays show his hand never got within 12 inches of lebrons face. That is just one recent extreme example of a problem that has been around since I’ve been watching.

They need to do something about it. I do not think the refs should take any actions against flopping during the game other then to call the games as best thy can. However after the game when the film is reviewed, if there is obvious extreme evidence of a guy faking a foul the league should hand out a small fine that may e increases with each infraction. I don’t just mean guys selling calls by overreacting or most general cases of flopping. I mean more the excessive and blatant cases such as the lebron one stated above where there was zero intent by the player other then to trick a ref.

Another thing that should be addressed is guys who complain over correct foul calls. Again I don’t mean everytime A guy disagrees with a call or if The call is in any way close. I mean flat out hacks where the player has zero reason to say anything and yet they still seem amazed at the call. I remember this happening in last years finals where Rasheed Wallace grabbed lobes forearm and yanked it back causing Kobe to lose the ball and then he put both hands on his head and ran 20 feet in disgust at the call. That’s just another exame off the top of my head that we see from time to time. THis should also result in a small fine with escalating fines for each additional penalty.

I know guys try and sell calls all the time and I do not expect or want a league where guys can’t have any emotion, but every now and then some of these things are just so blatant that I’m surprised the league doesn’t take action.

    Thoughts?

There’s flopping everywhere. I don’t think the NBA can really do much for it. As for the technical foul stuff for flops (Tyson Chandler on James Harden), I think the NBA should fine a player 30K for flopping if the Tech is rescinded.

For the players complaining about fouls, I never saw the problem with it in the early 2000’s, let the players show emotion. I say calm down on the techs if someone says anything.

After rereading this I want to ensure you guys this is in no way a lebron/ Kobe thing if that’s what you’re thinking. I was just using examples off the top of my head.

@bkknicksfan, i agree there is flopping everywhere and the NBA can’t do anything to stop it completely nor should they. I’m not talking about 95% of flops where guys are trying to sell calls that are bang bang or up for interpretation. I’m talking about full on role out the red carpet flops where replays show a clear guilty party. Why can’t the NBA do anything about those?

The NBA should definitely do something about the extreme cases of flopping. The officials have a difficult enough job officiating the games as it is… Plus it’s just weak. It’s a cheap and non-competitive way to put players in foul trouble or get bailed out.

Why not make it like hockey and call a foul.   In hockey if you try to take a dive you get called for a penalty.  Why not get called for a foul if you flop.  It would clean up flopping real quick.  You can’t say basketball is any more bang-bang type of action, they move way faster on skates and ice.

The refs could definitely put a stop to the faking. I see that as different than flopping to draw a charge call, which I think is kind of part of the game and basically caused by the refs. Unless the defender falls down, he isn’t going to get the charge call in his favor, so guys have to flop backwards.

But the fake where I pretend to have been hit in the eye or something, I would not stand for as a ref. If I was sure it was a fake, then that player wouldn’t get anymore calls for the rest of the game from me. And there is no reason why there can’t be a rule allowing the assessment of a technical foul later during a dead ball if a fake like that was discovered.

Yeah, and Wade’s flop to fake that he was fouled while trying to rebound by Jason Kidd was ridiculous. Kidd was on his back and then Wade just leapt forward and flailed his arms. Kidd got called for the foul. Terrible.
