Reptilian MonkParticipantThis is shocking and sad. They siad he would be ok and it was a very cureable and treatable form of cancer. Very sad and nothing but the best to his fmaily and people who knew him well. Very sudden and sad. Rest in Peace

whiteflashParticipantMy dad was given less than a year to live in ’92. He passed in April of 2006. One of my best buddies moms was diagnosed with non-aggressive pancreatic cancer two Thanksgiving’s ago. She was gone the week before Christmas. It seems the majority of the "experts" opinions on timetables and life expectancy are semi-educated guesses at best. Again, I hope the Saunders family and those closest to him are maintaining.

BleedGreen808ParticipantWow I was not expecting to see this news when I woke up. I knew his condition worsened but I didn’t know he was doing that bad. RIP Flip Saunders.

TarHeelRavenParticipantI as well as most other people on this site had no idea Flip was doing so poorly. I’ll always remember that 2004 team with MVP KG, Sam Cassell and Spree. One of my favorite teams of all time. RIP Flip.

HitsterParticipantVery sad news and unexpected so soon after they said he was sitting out the season. That announcement made a lot of us guess the situation may be more serious then we thought but no-one expected Flip to pass away just 48 hours later.
Flip was active during the draft period and was at the Summer League well into July, so we assume he was diagnosed well after this. The cancer must have been undetected and had probably spread when it was diagnosed.
Someone like Flip I would have thought would have had regular health checks and had access to the T-Wolves medical staff who he may well have spoken to if he seemed off or that thought he didn’t look well etc.
Our thoughts are with his family. I’d guess the T-Wolves owner lets the period of mourning pass, the season start and things settle down before any decision on who replaces Flip in his various roles long term.
It would be a nice tribute if Flip was inducted into the next HOF class, I believe he is eligible.

SwatLakeCityParticipantAccording to ESPN he was diagnosed this August. But he could have gone to the Medical staff of the Wolves very early on, he just didn’t want his health issues being told to anyone and everyone, just to family. I guess this year, he decided to go public with it because he had a major setback, and knew their were certain people within the sport of basketball who would want to hear about it.

SwatLakeCityParticipantFor those who don’t know Lymphoma, which is was reported that Coach Flip Saunders died of, is a form of blood cancer.
Many of my friends and relatives have suffered from blood cancers. One of them has died from it. So when I heard about this, and read the report on ESPN, I shedded a tear. I don’t usually cry over sad sports stories, but this one held a special place in my heart

XYRYXParticipantOh man that’s very bad news. Just yesterday we all were wishing him good luck and strength in this situation.
Seems like the situation has been way more serious than we knew.
My thoughts are with the people close to him and who supporterd him until the end.

ballislyfe25ParticipantRest in Peace Flip Saunders.
Flip was really doing a great job with this Timberwolves team and it is unfortunate that he won’t be here to see it through. He had a great vision for the team and roster from both a head coach’s and front office perspective and his exceptional work during this Wolves stint have left the team with an incredibly bright future. His handling of the Love situation, draft picks, and mixing veterans with high ceiling and talented youth is one of the best GM jobs I can recall. Remarkable. I wish we could have seen Flip develop this team over at least a 5 year period

omphalosParticipantHe did such an amazing job turning this franchise around that I wrote a 5,000 word essay on it for university last semester. He was the perfect leader for this franchise, with credibility, loyalty and passion.
It’s hard to believe he’s gone, but his legacy will be the greatness of this Timberwolves team in a few years and hopefully their first title.
RIP Flip, you will be missed.
