I decided to start a thread on both of theses tournaments as they reach the late rounds. I watch both of them interchangably as I mainly watch to see the international talent, specifically the young guys. I wanted to see what the forum’s thoughts are. Heck, I’ll even hear out what Euroballer  has to say. I view Euroballer rants as trophies. My thoughts, mainly I wish more young guys chose to play……

Brazil: This team could have been interesting, but no Cabolco, no George Lucas De Paula, no Lucas Nogueira. Disappointed and their absence shows as this team has been getting whooped by countries that have zero NBA players.

Argentina: Luis Scola looks like Wilt Chamberlain out there. It’s almost not fair that someone of his skill is playing. He’s been virtually unguardable just scoring at will.

Croatia: This was Dario Saric’s time to take off. Not really happening. He plays heavy minutes and is undoubtedly a steadying influence for the offense, but he disappears and doesn’t pressure the defense at all. Almost all of his points come from open shots due to lapses in the defense. While Hezonja hasn’t been super efficient, he’s aggressive and makes his impact felt.

Latvia: I understand why Porzingis decided to opt-out. But damn, this sort of tournament would have been perfect for a young player who hasn’t been a team’s feature player yet.

Ukraine: Same with Alex Len. He’s engaged in a battle with his lower extremities. Too bad because this would have been his chance to domiante.

    Anything else?

i would have liked to see coboclo, de paula out there for brazil, but they are extremely raw teenagers. im guessing the guys sent instead have a better chance of making the olympic team for rio, and are getting a tryout and minutes to see who can contribute alongside the guys like nene, tiago splitter, anderson verejou, and leandro barbosa who skipped the tourney since brazil is already into the olympics. coboclo and de paula will get some international experience before the 2020 games, but would need drastic improvement to replace the experienced international guys (with much lower upside and potential) before next summer.

and please refrain from the luiz scola – wilt chamberlain comparisons… i like scola, he’s gritty, strong, but with a great soft touch. lots of all around skill and made for the international game. he’s looking like the mvp of the tournament. but dont bring wilt into this… just, someone else…

The best brazilian players didn’t come to the FIBA americas, because they’ll be at home next year so they’re already qualified. no need to play this year.

Alex Len didn’t come for other reasons, the Ukraine Federation is in big trouble financially,so they had to change their coach, and many of the best players don’t play this year. It’s a difficult situation,a situation Len didn’t want to be involved in.

The only player worth a closer look in the Brazilian team was Augusto Lima, the other 11 don´t have any chance to play in the NBA.
