*** Feedback Request ***

Hey all, tech team here!

As some of you may know, we work for Aran Smith in building and maintaining the technical side of nbadraft.net. For the past few months, we have been hard at work crafting several much-needed updates to the sites, which we will be rolling out soon.

Issues we improved are:

  • Search: We built a new search system from the ground up, completely replacing the existing site search. It will be a lot easier and faster to find content on the site, including player stats, articles, forum posts, etc.
  • Mobile: We made a few interim tweaks that will make the site easier to use on mobile devices such as smartphones and tablets. We are working on a complete rebuilt of how we display the site, to further improve on the mobile experience, as well as the more modern larger PC/Mac desktop displays.
  • Ads: Ads pay the bills and keep the site alive. However, the way they work right now really slows the site down, so we made some changes to improve on that.

Besides these changes, we are looking to make a lot more improvements to the site, and this is where we would like to ask for your input and suggestions. We build and run this site for you, our guests. Is there anything we can do to make nbadraft.net better for you? Is there anything you would like us to change, or add?

We'd love to get your input on the site, and will consider all your suggestions carefully. We look forward to hearing from all of you!

Many thanks,

nbadraft.net tech team

I dont know what is going on,

I dont know what is going on, I've had a Mac since I started using this website late 2011 and I never came across problems with "create a mock", it currently does not save the draft you create succesfully.

It took me several tries before I could put my own lottery together, something like 8 tries.

Sorry if this doesn't apply to the context, but it is the biggest technical issue I have encountered in years.

editing post

Give more time to edit a post. As of right now we only get maybe 2 minutes.

Also, there are a lot of double posts. Give us a hour or so to be able to delete a post.

editing

After you make a post it gives an option to edit it. It seemingly goes away after 2-5 minutes. It's not a big deal as it only gives some time for those who like to make spelling corrections or maybe we just say something we regret right away. Being able to delete a double post would be great though. Thanks.

Ive been asking for years for you guys to establish a mobile "create a mock". I don't like using the other sites for my mock draft because I want to be able to share it in this forum without spamming. I also don't want to have to run to an internet cafe every time I need to make a mock. If you could get that done I would be thrilled.

When looking through your "My Points" under your own profile, for the description instead of "comment2445625" can you have the forum topic that your post was related to there?

It's cool to look back at some of your old posts/predictions on certain plaiyers but hard to find exactly where those posts would be at.

Rankings updated more frequently

It would be cool if the rankings could be updated a bit more frequently. For example, the top 10 by position isn't posted until very close to draft time, but it would be great to see it at the beginning of the season and see how it changes throughout. I know we can basically see this on the big board but it's nice to be able to filter by position.

Also, the rankings for each class could probably be done more than twice a year (the Freshmen/Soph/Junior/Senior rankings). In particular, I would love to see this done for the senior class after the tournament is over and then again after the PIT and the combine.

Also, could there be honorable mentions for the big board?

This is probably easier said than done, but I would like if a user could readily access all previous comments and forum posts. As of now, only recently submitted content is available, the last 7 or so posts, on the user account homepage.

I like the site and won't

I like the site and won't stop using it: all my gripes are tech related. These are the issues I run up against.

1) This site always adds a cookies tracker that I have to remove.
2) When I use my phone, some app always pops up and redirects me to their app.
3) When I use my phone and I’m posting, the page often refreshes (or something) before I can post and I lose everything I was saying. The page often ends up blank.
4) When I’m using my phone, sometimes what I’m typing partially disappears. I keep typing, the box expands, and it might even save, but I cannot see it and therefore, don’t know what I’m posting.
5) I have to use Internet Explorer if I want to write on the message boards (when I exclusively use Mozilla)
6) The site loads slower than 99% of websites.
7) I’m not wild about having to use HTML (or what-have-you) to paste a link. I’d like to just paste it in.

Hey there! Some good points,
Hey there!
Some good points, let me address them:
1) We use cookies to keep track of who is who when requests go to the backend. This is a purely technical cookie, and is important for the site to work properly. We only use this cookie for our own purposes, and don't use it for any kind of tracking or metrics/data collection. We also use several ad networks to display ads. This is what pays for the site, and keeps the lights on. Ad networks unfortunately use lots of cookie trackers - this is how *they* get paid in turn. Short of introducing paid subscriptions ort donations that remove the ads, I don't see how we can work around that.
2) We'll get rid of that on our side. Ad networks might do their own thing, but if we come across any of those shenanigans, we will disable those specific ads.
3) That will be fixed, it is a known issue
4) That is a known issue, and will be fixed
5) Yeah, we are painfully aware of this, we are also non-IE users...
6) Again, this is a known issue :( The site is actually very fast, and loads in about half a second when we disable all the ads. We have been working with the ad networks to change how and where ads are loaded, so that the site loads completely first, and ads are only shown after full pageload. Ad networks are not so keen on this - they want to show their ads first thing. However, we will work this out.
7) This is a known issue, and will be fixed

Thanks for your thorough feedback!

Player profiles are not

Player profiles are not always correct with player information and draft eligibility. For example Jamal Branch's profile www.nbadraft.net/players/jamal-branch says that he is a junior and not eligible for the draft when he is really a senior and eligible. Not saying i'm going to be putting Branch in my mock draft, but it would be nice if this information was correct. I have experienced this issue with a few other players in the past.

Hi Zach - yeah, this is a difficult issue to resolve. We receive between 8000 to 10000 spam forum submissions per day(!) and about 300 to 500 new user signups per day - also spam. We will be looking into a system where we whitelist people with a certain amount of posts, and a certain amount of userpoints to make this whole thing easier, but it is a hard problem to solve. I promise we will do our best to see if we can make the anti-spam stuff a bit easier and less invasive, but it is a hard problem, so I cannot make any promises.

Also, the forum topics listed

Also, the forum topics listed on the front page, are they based on when they were created or the last post?

It should be the last post so we can get active threads that go for a long time and people don't create new threads because they can't see stuff.

I know I was doing a series of articles and posting them here but people stopped seeing the thread once it dropped off the first page.

I was trying to avoid spamming new threads for every post but got penalised.

So, a "view new posts" button or having the active threads in the front page would be great.

Layout

I'll suggest the same thing I have every time you guys have asked for site feedback over the years.

CHANGE THE LAYOUT

It's not that the red & white is bad (a lot of white...), it's just been the same look since the dinosaurs were reading this site. It doesn't even have to be anything super flashy. No matter how many backend changes you make to a website, nothing has the same impact as a graphical/visual update. It would probably bring more people in and old people back if the site looked a bit more modern.

Other than that my only major gripe is posts being blocked because of triggering some "spam filter". I've even had posts blocked that were only a setence long...I'm not sure what triggers these but it's annoying, especially when you've been typing something up for 5-10 minutes then it won't let you submit it.

We are looking into a refresh of the theme and layout - the current design is getting a bit dated. The spam issue is difficult to deal with. There have been a whole lot

There have been a whole lot of suggestions and opinions but I hope you consider this minor one haha.

I would be thrilled if you gave the grades of players of previous drafts, like the one you guys do usually for prospects. I think the ratings and comparisons have stopped at 2007 I believe I just thought it'd be great to look back at how this specific prospect was viewed before he entered the league.

For example, players like Melo, TJ Ford, Stromile Swift players like that and what was their ratings and comparisons before turning pro. Much thanks!!

I was surprised at how little

I was surprised at how little feedback was given from all the great posters here, so I decided to throw in a few of my own for humble consideration.

1. It would be sweet for everyone to be able to set up mock drafts for both years (current and the next following year). A lot of times everyone here on the site are talking about both draft years players and it would be nice to set up for both years in our mocks.

2. It would be great to add a private message feature. You see a lot of guys get into arguments on here and sometimes that is healthy debate (that is essentially why some people come here) and sometimes that gets ugly and would be better solved through a private conversation.

3. A solid feature in addition to "flag as offensive" button (on each post) would be also having "flag as trolling" and "flag as spam". Yes it would be a lot of flagging to deal with but it would also make reading posts cleaner and more pleasant.

4. A hide post or minimize post feature (kind of like what they have on facebook) so when reading through a conversation topic you can hide the posts that aren't interesting or condusive to the topic in the readers mind.

1. Technically, there is no problem in doing this, I will ask Aran what he thinks.
2. Yeah - the new forum will have all kinds of features like that :)
3. Flagging is technically easy, but operationally hard since you will need humans to deal with flagged posts. Maybe we could work with community moderators - I will discuss with Aran
4. Yeah, we can look into that, will go on the list for consideration

I would abolish "negging" altogether, actually.

Though it may seem like harmless fun at first, "negging" has now become hopelessly corrupted; too often misused as a tool of intimidation by a small, sad group of mean-spirited, vindictive individuals attempting to silence all dissent (while likely suffering from severe genital warts).

Oh, and to whoever negged me in the "Wizards" thread ... how dare you?!

But just so you know, I actually feed off negativity. It, like, only makes me stronger.

I think it might be better to call them agree and disagree rather than thumbs up and thumbs down. It's a little less negative that way.

Negs

I too would like to see them go. Stay with me here for a minute.

It really antagonizes/ encourages trolling. It would be a lot better if beside everyone's profile it just showed positive feedback/ points/ thumbs up. It probably wouldn't matter for 9/10 but it would give way to much power to long time posters to affect opinions and keep other posters down. **No offense most veterans of the board are great but things can (or have been) be a bit cliquey here once in a while.

To build on this wouldn't it encourage a much nicer community (more positive feedback and less trolling) if instead of negs (thumbs down), a combination of posts and positive points led to something grander, like special statuses..ex. <100 pts = Rookie, 100-200 Cagey Veteran, 200-300 Star Player, 300-400 Superstar, 500+ HOF Status. There could be corresponding special site features that were unlocked for each level achieved. Like secret chat forums, access to a monthly AQA chat with Aran or other contibutors, access to a mock draft room, access to a 2nd year mock and who knows what other kind of cool goodies you guys could come up with (draft-net HOF t-shirt or hat)?? ;)

The best part is I am sure more posters would be more likely to keep the peace and to craft their posts in a way that envoked more positive responses and thoughtful conversations as opposed to starting up arguments or baiting others.

I find it annoying when kids

I find it annoying when kids say "yeh I knew he was going to be a bust" yet when that same player was drafted years back, they were on the bandwagon saying what a great pro he will be...

In the mock drafts, instead of comments could we maybe have a predictions page and/or use a 5 star rating so each user can predict how each player's pro career will go. eg. 0 or 1/2 star for bust up to 5 stars for HOF.

To go one step further we could even make a competition out of it. Aswell as the comp for the mock draft, to make one about each user's prediction of how each player will go in the pros. You could use this 5 star system for say the top 10-15 draft prospects and one nominated "sleeper pick". Having too many prospects will be too difficult as you can not really watch every single player drafted. Competition results would be 5 or 6 years after the actual draft.

Holy shit, a new Sticky thread!

1) Redistribute Point Wealth - Certain guys *cough*McDunkin*cough* have way too many points for no good reason. They (Read: McDunkin) don't even know anything about basketball! I would suggest that their points get redistributed to more worthy users like, I don't know......

....

........

...........myself?

2) The Off-Topic forum was once hallowed ground on the .net but now it's overrun by bots and no one uses it. Perhaps create your own bots that generate relevant off-topic content? Like maybe have a Leroy Jenkins bot???

3) Yeah, there's also this weird thing where don042488 is still able to make posts? Like, he's able to make posts on the forum where he shares his basketball ideas? I don't know what that's all about...

4) MORE ARAN SMITH INTERACTION ON THE FORUM. The fans love this. One time, Aran was using the forum...and he replied to my comment! Me! And ARAN SMITH! Gosh, there's still a brown stain on the pair of underwear I was wearing when that took place.

5) Ban users who talk about Oregon athletics all the time

6) Make JoeWolf Forum King. He is my hero.

7) Enfore anti-bullying policy when Taylor Condrin doesn't play nice with me.

8) Legalize Marijuana

9) Ability to make your own Top 1000 Big Board

10) Draft Lobby where users can sign up for a spot in an official user-run NBA Mock Draft (That's actually not a bad idea that maybe I should submit seriously. If it's feasible)

But no, on a even more serious note than all my previous super-serious notes, consider the following

-Bring back the "Active Thread" feature cause that made the site more fun and also helped keep Off-Topic threads relevant

-Create a Notification system, where you can check your notifications and see if a thread you commented on is currently active. Furthermore, consider making a feature where other users can "tag" each other (like put @mikeyvthedon, for instance, and it links to mikeyvthedon's user page) and said tagged user is notified. This will help contribute to furthering discussion between active users. See Yik Yak's recently added feature as an example, sort of. Or, you know, facebook.

-Find LeroyJenkins, NoMoney, IndianaBasketball, JoeWolf, NBANFLGUY, OrangeJuiceJones, M-DYMES, I May Be Wrong, Siggy, DanEBoy, Tyrober, TC_42, and DNYCE and make them post again under threat of death

One thing I think would make

One thing I think would make this site better for the users is being able to create multiple mocks. By this I mean instead of only being able to do a mock for that year you should be able to create a mock for that year and the next year. That would mean I would be able to create a 2015 mock, 2016 mock and maybe 2017 mock all in one spot without having to use other websites that aren't as good and not having to wait a year to do a mock.

I have not seen all the comments on this thread, so forgive me if this is a repeat. There are currently about two pages worth of spam on the forum. This is unacceptable. I think it is best if nbadraft.net invested in a full time board moderator in light of spam and recent obvious attempts at trolling.

One thing I have noticed as

One thing I have noticed as well is a re-occuring threads on certain prospects. Why can't we just add a discussion box with the respective prospect's profile? This would enable us to see a history of public perception to a NBA hopeful, and make the site that much more interesting, while at the same time eliminating the clutter and re-occuring threads on the forums.
