Hey guys, I have a fantasy basketball draft today and was looking to reference a few of you hoops junkies for draft intel.

It’s a competetive 12 team, 9 category Head to Head league. I have the 9th pick and was thinking of selecting Kawhi Leonard since he gets good percentages without turning the ball over. I also think Lillard, Wall, and Klay will be available at that pick as well. Any recomendations on who to pick at the end of the 1st round?

Also, who do you guys like later in the draft under that format? I’m thinking of pulling the trigger on Gobert in the 2nd round, grabbing Mirotic and Isaiah Thomas in the late middle rounds, and then CJ McCollum near the end of my draft (favorite sleeper pick).

    Any thoughts/ideas are greatly appreciated!

I think you have a good strategy sitting at your draft position. If you can get Kawhi at the 9th pick I think that is a steal. I think Wall is also a great option due to his dominance in assists and steals. If you go Gobert 2nd round I really like your mirotic/thomas/mccollum picks to pick up the scoring slack. I tend to draft for those harder to get categories (steals, blocks, assists) in the early rounds because you can always find scoring in the later rounds/waiver wire pickups.

You could go with a big man strategy.  GO BIG.  Or, go with guards.

You can win a 9 category league with rebounds, FG%, blocked shots, steals, and low TO’s.

Centers tend to get fewer turnovers than guards.  They are also ok on steals.

With Kawhi at 9 then he can get you the big guy stats from the 3 which would be great.  Rudy Gobert would help solidify that.

I have won two leagues on Yahoo, and I lost an ESPN league last year that didn’t have a TO category.  I had the 3rd pick and was thinking Anthony Davis all along, but at the last minute took Chris Paul.  I doubled down with Dwight Howard with my second pick.  Two less than optimal picks and no clear strategy.

So you are picking at 9 and what?  You want to get your combo — your one-two punch there.  Then your Big Four.  I would actually pick up 3 point shooters very late IF that is not your strategy.  IF 3 pointers are a category you are going after then think about getting Klay Thompson at 9 if he is there.  The 2 guard spot isn’t that deep…

DeAndre Jordan might be a good pick at 9… Write off FT% and 3pt, but he can get your boards, blocked shots, and FG%.  His PTS might be decent enough… if he limits his TOs he gives you 5 categories even without points.  Then double down with Rudy Gobert as your 2nd pick.  Lock up blocked shots and big man stats…  Gobert averaged .8 steals per game last year which is not too bad.

Go Best Player Available with your 3rd pick.  Preferably the best scorer/rebounder on the board.

If you think DeAndre Jordan will be there with your 2nd pick, then go Best Player Available at 1.

Get low TO and decent 3PT and good FT% point guards late with a big man strategy.

I have never done well with 3PT and have won Yahoo leagues in two of the past 4 or 5 years.  Other than Steph and Klay a lot of the other high 3PT guys are undisciplined gunners.  Then the 3PT specialists don’t give you enough of anything else.

You can go with a PT, FG%, FT%, STL, low TO strategy IF Klay Thompson is on the board at 9 then take Kyle Korver with your 2nd pick.  You ALSO have two top flight shooting guards where that spot is not that deep.  With your third pick here get Mike Conley if he is on the board.  He gives you all the little guy stuff while being pretty efficient.  Using this strategy, don’t get bigs (or anyone else) who can’t shoot 3’s.  You might even want to get Tony Allen late, since he can get you STL, BLK, solid FG% from the 2 guard position without taking enough shots to hurt your percentages.  TA would be a good fifth wing in basically ANY strategy.  However, he might give you fewer minutes this season.

Chris Bosh with your 4th pick would be a wild card if he is still there.  Solid all around big man who can shoot 3’s.

Get 10 guys who fulfill your strategy then fill out the roster with specialists.

In category leagues volume matters more than in points leagues, thus reducing the value of you Isaiah Thomas/Nikola Mirotic types. At the top of the draft you should take the best player regardless of specialization, which is likely to be Lillard, Griffin, Kawhi, or Wall. On the turn skip Jordan and Gobert, Jordan’s FT% is too detrimental (and you can likely get Drummond or Whiteside  the next round, both have higher upside) and Gobert is not going to give you much outside of blocks and FG%. Marc Gasol, LaMarcus Aldridge, and Al Horford will help you in multiple categories without hurting you. Paul George in the second round might also be worth a look.

It was a great draft! I’m low on assists, but very strong points, steals, rebounds, blocks, fg%, threes.

Rd. 1 – Damian Lillard – Kawhi was gone. Chose Lillard over Wall

    Rd. 2 – Rudy Gobert – Wanted rebounds, fg% & blocks without punting ft%

    Rd. 3 – Victor Oladipo – Could average 20-5-5 w/ 2 stls

Rd. 4 – Nerlens Noel – Defensive savant. High upside

Rd. 5 – Derrick Favors – 16 & 8 w/ 1.7 blks last year. Should be even better this season

Rd. 6 – Monta Ellis – Will run, run, run in Indiana this year. Total beast if PG-13 misses time

Rd. 7 – Jonas Valanciunas – Should average close to 15 & 9 with great %’s this year

Rd. 8 – Thaddeus Young – Total steal in rd. 8. Couldn’t pass him up this late in draft

Rd. 9 – Bradley Beal – Another total steal in rd. 9. Injury risk isn’t as big this late in draft

Rd. 10 –  Danilo Gallinari – Tearing it up in Eurobasket. Could be go-to option for Nuggs

Rd. 11 – Gorgui Dieng – Had a top 40 year last season in 9-cat. Will Towns crush his value??

    Rd. 12 – C.J McCollum – SUPER SLEEPER!!

Rd. 13 – Myles Turner – High upside pick in 13th rd. Might be my favorite selection

Interesting post thanks,  I’d be interested to know where Gordon Hayward went in your draft, to me he would be pretty high.
