Fab Melo traded for Donte Greene

The Celtics and the Grizzlies completed a trade today that sent Fab Melo to Memphis in exchange for Donte Greene. Any thoughts?

I guess the Grizzlies are looking for someone to back up Marc Gasol. I want to know where Donte Greene is going to fit in with the Celtics.

They already signed Kosta Koufos to back Marc Gasol up. I don't really get this trade though.

ITS HAPPENING

THE DESTINY IS UNFORLDING. THE REVELATION IS COMING. THE CELTICS JUST ACQUIRED DONTE GREENE. NOW WE MUST ACQUIRE GERALD GREEN, DANNY GREEN, AND DRAYMOND GREEN TO COMPLETE THE GREEN LINEUP WITH JEFF GREEN ON THE GREEN. ONCE THIS IS DONE THE NBA WILL COWER AT THE AWESOME MIGHT OF GREEN AS WE WIN THE NEXT 5 CHAMPIONSHIPS WITH A GREEN LINEUP.

C- Donte Greene
PF- Draymond Green
SF- Jeff Green
SG- Danny Green
PG- Willie Green

6th man- Gerald Green

That takes what little shot

That takes what little shot blocking the Celtics had off the roster. They now have a frontline rotation of Bass, Green, Sullinger and Olynyk. I didn't think Fab would get big minutes but he could defend the interior for 10-12 minutes a night and give some fouls.

I guess Brad Stevens isn't a Fab Melo fan.

Not sure exactly where the

Not sure exactly where the Celtics are going, but no-one is these days. Should be added that Greene is making 1.6 while Melo is at the minimum, this move is pretty trivial overall. Kostas Koufos is already a very good backup so I dont see Melo gettin any sort of meaningful minutes in Memphis

Blockbuster. No but

Blockbuster.

No but seriously, I think Fab Melo is worth a little more than Donte Green.

It's a nothing trade. The Celtics already gave up on Melo and they found a taker. I guess there goes the notion of Faverani being brought in to mentor Fab. I doubt Fab gets his 3rd and 4th options exercised. He's just a bad basketball player.
Greene's not an NBA caliber player either IMO. He's basically a stretch 4 who's shot isn't respectable, which means he's a...I don't even know. His contract is non-guaranteed which makes him a prime candidate to be waived

I thought Fab had an extremely brigh future as a starting center from what I saw at Syracuse. I don't see how he fits in Memphis.

Those 8 points and 6 boards a game had me thinking Hall of FAME. Nobody really expected him to be a starter that I recall...everybody thought he would at least be a serviceable backup center...but that hasn't happened yet.

Fine trade for both teams.

Fine trade for both teams. The Celtics will get below the tax line when they release Greene, so for them this trade seemed to have been strictly financial. Melo's still a better prospect than Greene, so it was worth a shot for the Grizz. If he doesn't do anything this year they can simply decline his team option for next year.

For Boston, it is just a cap

For Boston, it is just a cap move. Donte Greene's contract isn't guaranteed, and Melo's deal is locked in. The Melo money minus Shavlik Randolph's non-guaranteed deal gets them under the projected tax line for the remaining 14 players under contract. Memphis is just getting a one-year look. With Randolph, Gasol, Koufos, Davis, Leuer, and Reed, I don't see Melo getting minutes up front. I certainly do not think he is ready to help a contender, but he is a 7-footer with some strength and athleticism. It isn't breaking the bank for Memphis to carry him, so there is little harm. If he shows some improvement in training camp and ultimately Ft. Wayne, then a few years down the line he might replace Koufos as Gasol's backup.

Oranges

Cuse guy for Cuse guy. Given SU's NBA track record (recently) they probably won't be in the Association for long. And I graduated from SU.

Fab Melo, great draft

Fab Melo, great draft selection by the masterful mind in Danny Ainge. Executive of the Year?

Ainge had two picks

Ainge had two picks back-to-back last year. Don't forget that with one of them he picked Sullinger who turned out great for a mid-late first rounder. It was worth taking a shot at Melo. The Celtics were in a low risk high reward situation. You already drfted a guy with top 10 talent 21st overall so why not take a risk on a big man who has all of the physical tools you want? OK, he's been a disappointment so far so they've gotten rid of him. This is insignificant for the Celtics.

Ainge is a bit of a boom or

Ainge is a bit of a boom or bust in the draft, he either gets someone of great value or someone who will be shipped out within a year.

Bradley and Sullinger were both great picks, but Johnson, Moore and Melo are all gone.

I wish they'd taken kept Marshon Brooks instead of trading him or drafted Jeremy Tyler in that draft. I think being in Boston alongside KG, Pierce and the rest would have given him the proper mentoring he needed to be a building block, because the talent is there, he just needs to work on the space between his ears.

Unfortunately Melo just lacks any awareness offensively and is never going to be a productive two-way player.

big men take a while to

big men take a while to develop so it is worth the gamble. Even Orton and Thabeet were able to revive their careers elsewhere. BJ Mullens who seemed like a bust for OKC went to Charlotte and showed enough promise to be a bk up for LA Clippers.

I agree that Boston have made

I agree that Boston have made the move to release Greene and get below the tax level. Memphis have taken Koufos to give Marc Gasol a good back up and we know that George Karl rated Koufos so Memphis already have a strong C rotation. I guess that Memphis have taken a low downside risk and that maybe Brad Stevens did not fancy Melo as a player or more likely Danny Ainge just trimmed the budget.

Fab wouldn't have played for

Fab wouldn't have played for Boston, especially after signing Faverani. They also still have Colton Iverson ( who I thought looked better than Fab in SL ) in Turkey and he could come over for next season if need be. Boston isn't out anything long term and Memphis has a cheap 3rd stringer who they can resign if he does anything this year or let go after his rookie scale deal expires at the end of the season.
