Adam Silver has said that the NBA is not currently planning an expansion team, but there are plenty of folks itching for pro hoops around the country (I see you, Seattle). It’s been 10 years since we’ve seen an expansion draft. In ’04 the Bobcats took Gerald Wallace, Premo Brezec, Brevin Knight, Jason Kapono, and some others. They draft Emeka Okafor with the No. 2 overall pick. They also traded for Kareem Rush and Keith Bogans. They were coached Bernie Bickerstaff.

All NBA teams were allowed to protect eight players who were either signed or RFAs. So here’s what I propose:

    1. Let’s go through all 30 teams one post at a time, beginning with Atlanta. If you get us started, list your eight keepers and also provide the remaining names on Atlanta’s current roster so we know who will be eligible for the draft when all rosters are finalized.

    2. Going alphabetically, the next person to post can take Boston, the next Brooklyn, and so on.

    3. Once each team is posted, all posters are welcome to select 14 players from the unprotected list that we’ve accumulated on the thread. For the sake of standardization, let’s work off the same pool; don’t change the players that a previous poster chose to keep or leave unprotected.

You can also throw in a No. 2 overall draft pick for 2015, hire a coach, and even give a city or a team name or whatever you find fun. You can also include an argument as to why your squad would be better than the ’04-’05 Bobcats that went 18-64.

I would probably keep Antic over Carroll (premium for big men); for the rest pretty spot on

aaaand … I’m late (by quite a long shot).  I even forgot Evan Turner, so I guess Taylor’s is the one to go with, his is pretty similar to mine anyway.  I’ll probably do another team if there are any left when I get back home.

Oh, and Shawn Marion is not on Dallas’s roster. He’s a free agent.

    Phoenix Suns

    RETAINED

    Goran Dragic

    Eric Bledsoe

    Isiah Thomas

    Gerald Green

    T.J. Warren

    Markieff Morris

    Alex Len

    Miles Plumlee

    Marcus Morris

    P.J. Tucker

    Shavlik Randolph

    Emeka Okafor

    Leandro Barbosa

    Anthony Tolliver

Extremely hard team to do, as I am a Suns fan and would’ve kept Ennis, Plumlee, Tucker, and Morris if I had unlimted keeps. Ultimately, I went with upside and youth, as that is Phoenix’s best asset. Ennis was expendible with Gogi, Bledsoe, and Thomas combined with Green and Goodwin who are capable of playing the 2 guard as well. I think that an expansion team would be a good chunk of Phoenix’s bench if it were to happen right now lol.

Phoenix would be one of the hardest teams to do given they have a lot of good depth but no real superstars. With expansion drafts teams can only lose one player so the damage to any roster is limited.

It would be kind of fun if they were just given a blank roster and could chase free agents take on salaries etc to see what sort of roster they could get.

Very good topic anyway, I’ll post a full team when I’ve got time, Denver, Spurs, Utah and Washington off the top of my head would seem interesting ones to do as there are a few either/ors if anyone wants to run with them.

    Danillo Galinari

    Kenneth Farried

    Jusuf Nurkic

    Gary Harris

    JJ Hickson

    Darell Arthur

    Randye Foye

    Nate Robinson

    Erick Green

    Synopsis:

Lots of quality players to choose from for the expansion team. they can probably get their starting center with Mozgov or McGee. Hickson is still a starting quality bigman in the league as a 4 or undersized 5. Foye has turned himself into one of the best snipers of the league as a starting off guard for the past 2 seasons. And we all know about Nate’s heroics in the 4th and what he’s been able to do in each place he’s played at. I mostly kept denver’s young talent in the retain list over some of the more established names i mentioned

Not the easiest team to do. I mean, the first few players are obvious keepers. After KCP, not so much. Butler, Singler, and Bynum–a case could be made to keep them.

Out of curiosity OP isn’t there be a limit on how many players can get picked from the same team? I know there is some rule that tries to prevent one team from losing a bunch of players but the details escape me

Expansion teams can select all the players they want, but they can’t select more than one from a single team

    Isiah Canaan

    Robert Covington

    Jeff Adrien

    Joey Dorsey

    Synopsis:

The rockets is actually one of the teams that i expect not to loose anyone. of everyone available, maybe donatas or canaan would get a shot on another team, but given the availability of other players on other teams and limitted roster spots, id say that the rockets would keep their team intact. composing their protected list was basically listing down their starting line-up, adding their two free agent additions as well as the 2 most intriguing young talent they had on the squad.

If I was a GM from an expansion team I would definitely pick Donatas. He´s big, can shoot and has a reasonable salary

    Available:

Decision came down to Clarkson, Henry or Nash for me. I guess you choose Nash if you believe that the expansion team is willing to take on his salary for the star name in its first year. If not, then I think you go Clarkson if you like his upside more than Henry’s. I don’t think they’ll leave any of their signings from the summer unprotected, because they clearly value them (boozer, hill, davis and young), even though they don’t seem valuable to us rational people.

    C-Marc Gasol

    Available:

Courtney Lee, Jarnell Stokes, Nick Calathes, Jon Leuer, Jamaal Franklin, Tayshaun Prince

This was pretty tough, as the last two spots could go many directions depending on who they like. I went with Pondexter and Koufus, because Calathes seems to want out anyways and Lee’s contract is a burden. But you could easily convince me to choose one of those guys, or even Leuer as well, since they lack big-man depth.

Pretty straight forward. Only debate was which one of the three to leave unprotected: Haslem, Anderson or Chalmers. I went with Haslem becaue he is the least likely to be picked up by the expasion team.

I’m really enjoying this thread and would want to keep it going. will be interesting to see the total pool of players in the end.

    Retain:

    Giannis Antetokounmpo

    Jabari Parker

    John Henson

    Brandan Knight

    Khris Middleton

    Nate Wolters

    Kendall Marshall

    Available:

Jerryd Bayless, OJ Mayo, Ersan Ilyasova, Zaza Pachulia, Carlos Delfino, Miroslav Radujica, Chris Wright, Johnny O’Bryant

    Synopsis:

General rule i followed for a rebuilding team such as the bucks would be to keep their young talent as much as they can. i also made most of their highly paid players available except for Sanders who has good trade value being a shot blocking big man and that still being a premium in the NBA. my last pick to retain came down to Marshall, Bayless and O’Bryant. Went with marhsall due to his age and that he had a good season last year and can possibly be a long term starting point if kidd is able to develop his defensive skills. i also used the expansion draft as an opportunity to maybe rid the contracts of OJ Mayo and Ersan Ilyasova. it would come down to the expansion team if they want a team that can compete for some wins to take either of them, or would rather get some young talent then O’Bryant becomes a contender to be selected.

i honestly had a hard time thinking who would the knicks place in their last two protected slots. eventually went with their 2 biggest expiring contracts over the enigmatic JR Smith. he’s the only player i think that has a shot of being taken, maybe Acy? in the end though, i dont think knicks offer much since the choice would be between a bunch of journey men, a time bomb type of player in JR Smith and potential undersized but athletic hustle big. something tells me that there would be a bunch of those to choose from when we see the whole pool of available players.

i honestly had a hard time thinking who would the knicks place in their last two protected slots. eventually went with their 2 biggest expiring contracts over the enigmatic JR Smith. he’s the only player i think that has a shot of being taken, maybe Acy? in the end though, i dont think knicks offer much since the choice would be between a bunch of journey men, a time bomb type of player in JR Smith and potential undersized but athletic hustle big. something tells me that there would be a bunch of those to choose from when we see the whole pool of available players.
