Evan Turner's Rookie Game Snub Is Outrageous and Shows What is Wrong With The NBA

Evan Turner has been enigmatic to say the least this season. One thing he hasn't done is bust. I'm not sure what people expectations were of him going into the season but he has proven when given minutes and the opportunity he will be successful.

Doug Collins took the job as the Sixers head coach because he thought that they could be like the Hawks where the sum is greater then the parts. He thought they were a playoff caliber team last year that just lacked the proper direction. Doug Collins was right. One thing Doug Collins did not think was that whoever the 2nd pick was, was going to be the savior and he made plans for retooling the Sixers way before they got the 2nd pick.

Enter Evan Turner. The first thing Collins did was define every players role on the team. This is the main reason for the Sixers turnaround is the team if finally defined, and players know their role. Thad Young is no longer a PF trying to prove he can play SF. Lou Williams is no longer running around trying to carry on Iverson's torch. Holiday has an actual offense he can run. And Iggy is no longer looked at like a mini Lebron who can do everything, and was expected to score down the stretch and take all the big shots. When Turner arrived Collins honestly didn't know what to do with him at first. Turner does so many thing well Collins wasn't sure how to use him. He at first had him running point with Lou as an off guard. Then he had him starting a SG. Now it looks like Turner's best position is SF right now.

But one thing Turner, like the rest of the Sixers has done well is play their role. As Turner's role on the team became defined his play started to do the speaking. Remember in his rookie debut against the Heat Turner dropped 16, 7, n 4 and the very next game only took one shot that he missed. Now that the rotations are set and the Sixers are a legitimate playoff team doing more winning then losing, Turner has flourished. He still isn't getting big minutes or putting up big numbers but he has been rock solid in Battier type role. Turner has been playing great, not good, but great defense, and hasn't been turning the ball over.

I don't understand how a player like Bledsoe, and Wes Johnson made the rookie team over Turner. Specifically Wes Johnson who has been playing close to 30 minutes a night with the green light to shoot on one of the worse teams in the league, and is still averaging only 2 more points then Turner, yet despite his length and athleticism, 2 less rebounds. Bledsoe has regressed and the Clippers started winning when they started limiting his minutes. And a play like Greg Monroe has just started to play well, despite having virtually nobody in front of him all year. Turner has had to battle for minutes with Iggy, and other savvy vets like Nocioni, Lou Williams who is a scoring machine, and Jodie Meeks who is a shooting machine. Despite the Sixers not really needing Turner's skill set with Iggy, Williams, and Holiday, Turner has forced Collins to give him minutes because of his defense and BB IQ. Even NBA.com and their Rookie Rankings, who I have even E-mailed because of them failing to put Turner on their list earlier had this to say.

The biggest omission for me from the Rookie Challenge was Turner. I've been one of his toughest critics, but there's no denying the No. 2 pick has improved as the season has progressed. I don't know I can say the same for Clippers PG Eric Bledsoe, who earned a spot. The only rationale I can figure is that the selection committee thought the Rookies needed another point guard. In his last four, Turner has three double-digit scoring games and averaged 10.5 points, 6.0 rebounds and 4.3 assists with just three total turnovers.

Hopefully this lights a fire

Hopefully this lights a fire under his butt. He's very capable he just needs shots. If he were more consistent I think he would've made the team, it's just that Bledsoe and Johnson are getting minutes. He will definitely be on the Sophomore team next year.

I'd say put him on the team over bledsoe. Did they replace Blake yet?..If not then Turner might get the spot

Wes Johnson. Now I know

Wes Johnson. Now I know that's your team so don't get me wrong, cuz I like the Wolves especially since they start Beasley, Love, and Darko.

But Turner has had a way bigger impact then Wes Johnson has had this year. Turner has played winning basketball on a playoff team. Turner' and Wes Johnson' Points, rebounds, and assists totals are virtually the same despite Turner playing 5 less minutes a game for a slower paced team off the bench.

Also Bledsoe doesn't even deserve to be thought of before Turner. Turner has been a huge reason the Sixers are the 7th seed right now, while if you look at Bledsoes numbers in the Clippers wins it's easy to see that he has no hand in their wins.

And Greg Monroe shouldn't be on their before Turner either. Turner has had moments throughout the season and has always had a positive contribution while he was on the court while Monroe for most of the first 3 months looked completely lost. He has had more of his shots blocked then Turner despite standing near 7 foot because he was playing so soft early in the season, as compared to Turner who lead his team in scoring in the season debut against the Heat, and he guarded Wade and James well during that game.

Turner is also the only rookie to actually log minutes at 3 different positions and be successful. Name another rookie who has successfully ran point for their team, started at shooting guard, and comes off the bench to fill in for the small forward...?

Even Favors what has Favors

Even Favors what has Favors done this season that Turner hasn't? Turner has had a few 20 point games mixed in with a few doubles doubles, all while playing great defense and limiting his turnovers. Turner only averages barely over a turnover a game despite running point a lot for the Sixers. Favors has done nothing outside a few double doubles, and hasn't come close to scoring 20 this year. Plus Turner only get's like 1.5 rebounds less a game then Favors despite playing guard most of the time.

Cousins, Wall, and Fields are

Cousins, Wall, and Fields are the only true rookies that have played better overall throughout the year then Turner. Neal is like 50 years old finally in the league, and Griffin has already went thru 2 training camps, and one offseason on his way to rookie of the year.

Turner has played in every

Turner has played in every game this season....?....He started a few of them and he def deserves to make it over half this roster. Wes Johnson's team has won 12 games this year I can name 12 games that Turner had his hand in winning for the Sixers. And his efficiency rating is higher then Neals, Johnsons, Bledoe's, and Favors. And his plus minus rating is higher then half of the people on the rookie team too. Oh and he is still top 7 in scoring, rebounding, and assists for Rookies, so how are their 10 rookies better then him right now?

Turner should get in...

The only guy I have w problem with is Bledsoe...If Evan Turner was drafted by the Wolves (lets say the Sixers selected Cousins), he would be a top 5 rookie of the year candidate...he's going to have a way bigger impact on a game then Johnson, Bledsoe and Others...I can side with Mr.19124, Turner is an impact rookie playing a big role for a team fighting for a spot in the playoffs...he should be in over guys putting up mediocre numbers with green lights on terrible teams...but as we know the Nba would rather promote flash then actual skill, finesse and efficiency...

i disagree w/ you guys a whole lot. turner has had very few games he played well in. the games he has played well in, iggy was out. dont get me wrong, thats fine and all but thats the only time i remember thinking he did well. otherwise for "the most nba ready" rookie, he really didnt look ready. next year i say he breaks through though.

and Wall, Favors, Johnson and Cousins have broken out this year

Turner will be the only Rookie impacting a playoff berth besides, what for it Landry Fields...he's breaking out at the perfect time, down the stretch as the Sixers make a playoff push...it is very much "get mine time" for most nba rookies...he's gonna be a playoff proven prospect at the end of the year...I can live with his season filled with Ups and downs ending in his team's success...

Excellent point Mr. 19134.

I was shocked myself to see Bledsoe got picked over Turner. I'm not really a fan, but he deserved this spot more than Bledsoe that's for sure. I bet John Amaechi was mad as hell to hear his boy wasn't picked.

Turner has not played well

He was suppose to be the player most ready and he has stuggled a lot. He is looking like a role player big time not a #2 pick. He might be a lot better next year but this year he has been bad. Yes bad.

what rookie picked this year is a # 1 option...

Turner has a good shot to be a # 1 one day, but he's been locked into his role so far...which is not bad...I said it from day 1, Turner will be playing the role of Willie Green this year (play great defense, spot up and shoot jumpers) year 2 will be his true coming out party....he will have work on his jumper but he's a hard worker with good mechanics...

I don't know why anybody

I don't know why anybody would be shocked about Bledsoe making it over Turner when he's played better.

I've been WAY more impressed with Bledsoe's individual play than I have been with Turner's. I've been more impressed with Bledsoe at just about every aspect. Poise especially.

My bad Stanford i didn't

My bad Stanford i didn't recognize that was you at first

And who is this Steven dude who disagreed with me>? Have you watched the Sixers play extensively this season? If you did then you would know that while Turner did play well without Iggy in the lineup he has also put up great games with Iggy in the lineup last these past few weeks. What do you consider a great game? You probably look at the box score and see he scored 12 points and immediatley write if off as an average game, but during that game Turner would have 7 rebounds and 4 assists while playing great defense. Turner get's most of his points and production in the 4th quarter also. And another thing about Turner is sometimes he looks scared to shoot until it's a tight game, then he'll start hitting shots. I've noticed during the year Turner loves taking shots when the score is on a see-saw.

And in the last 4 games as NBA.com point out Turner has averaged 10, 6, and 4. The Sixers were 3-1 in them games while crawling closer to the 6th seed. Turner had 17 assists during them 4 games and only 3 turnovers. That is pretty much how he has been producing all year. The Sixers are a feed the hot man team and it's somebody different every night so the whole teams production is all over the board. Look at Iggy himself only averaging 14 this year.

After looking further i have

After looking further i have no clue why Bledose was picked over Turner( other than the team wanting another point guard). Since being picked is based on stats Turner's overall stats are better. Neither are great shooters ( both have .257 3point percentage). Can't bring in team position because thats not how they pick the rookie/soph game, if they did it would be a land slide for Turner. Pretty much Bledsoe was picked because there was really no other option for Point guard

Other than rebounding, Turner

Other than rebounding, Turner has no real edge over Bledsoe statistics wise. All shooting percentages are close. I don't think statistics can really be used to determine who's more deserving between the two.

Bledsoe has played above expectations in my opinion and that's despite a small regression in his play after Baron Davis returned. Turner on the other hand, regardless of how anybody spins it, has played below expectations.

Turner may play great the second half of the season and may be a contributor in the playoffs if the 76ers make it, but he still hasn't been too impressive the first half of the season.

Bledsoe is there because

bledsoe is there because he is a point guard and he ran the team while blake put up monster numbers in the first half while Baron was out. its not tha he is the best cause he clearly is not he is getting recognition off of Blake's coat tails.

Stats is what they use to

Stats is what they use to pick the Rookie soph team right?.."i may be wrong" but i doubt it.

But seriously i think thats how they do it. If you go down the list of players and compare there stats to there peers they more than likely have better stats then the guys who didnt make it.

He plays like a cricket? He

He plays like a cricket? He does sound like a cyborg or something that part was funny but he's actually cool as hell. I thought he was a nerd from the way he talked, but he's funny as hell his speach impetetenant is from a nasty car crash he suffered earlier in life where he almost died is from what I heard.

And I like Paul George too but he hasn't played enough games, neither has Eyenga who would be fun to watch in the game. And Them 2 aside Turner is 7th in scoring, 7th in rebounding, 7th in assists, 7th in Pts, rebs, asts, and only .02 behind Wes Johnson who has a grean light to shoot on an umptempo team that he is doing nothing to help win games. Turner is 3rd in FT% counting the players who shot atleast 50 foul shots onlyl.

And just as important to understand how effective Turner's game has been for the Sixers and why the team is winning with him Turner is 7th in NBA.com's efficiency rating. Below Turner in Efficiency is George, Wes Johnson, Bledsoe, Favors, and Gary Neal just to name a few who have been playing at a less efficient rate on besides George all for teams with worse records yet for some reason 4 of them player were voting on ahead of Turner.

Bottom line is if you go by stats then Turner should be on there, if you go by stats and winning then Turner should be easily on there, so why did he not make it? And after what I just told you what argument could you make saying he doesn't deserve to be on their because if you look at the numbers he more then deserves to be on there.

How can somonebody say he don't deserve to make it when he has better numbers then most of the players on the team, and the Sixers have the best record out of anybody on the team except Gary Neal who don't do anything but come in for 19 minutes a game and bomb 3's which he hits at below 40% so why does he even deserve to be on their. And Turner can play PG anyways so that's not an excuse for Bledsoe.

7.5, 4.5, 2.1 assists, are

7.5, 4.5, 2.1 assists, are better numbers then Bledsoe, Favors, Monroe, Gary Neal, And Wes Johnson.

Also he gets them within the flow of the offense while playing great defense something Bledsoe, Johnson, Wall, Cousins, Monroe, and Neal have failed to do this year. None of them guys play defense as well as Turner.

And like I said the team is a ten man roster but Turner is top 7 in the 3 main stat categories so if you go by stats how did he not make it?

If you go by stats and winning how did he not make it? There is no coincidence that the Sixers started off 3-13 and have gone 20-14 since then right around the time Collins finally figured out a role Turner can produce in. If Turner played on the Nets or Wolves he would be averaging close to 14, 7, and 3 no doubt in my mind. I have watched every Sixer game this year including a few twice.

You saying he succs just shows you igrnoance. Tell me logically how he was left off the team or didn't deserve making the team when he is playing helping his team make a playoff push while all these other guys got the green light on a bottom feeder team yet still can't even produce stats.

And Turner is better then Wes Johnson any day of the rookie. Go thru any statistics you want, efficiency, PER, or team wins, and Turner has them beat.

Paul George is another guy

Paul George is another guy who has the green light to shoot on a Pacer team that is a fringe playoff team, and he just started playing. Had George been playing from day one like Turner his stats would be closer to 5 points or 4 points a game becaue it took his this long to be ready to play. Turner dropped 17, 7, n 4 while guarding James n Wade in a close game during his rookie debut. George would of gotten manhandled by both of them if he had to guard them in the season opener.

The problem is not Turner's capability it's his opportunities. Because Iggy is on the team Collins rather start Meeks for floor spreading reasons. And Lou Williams is our closer so he always has the ball in his hands at the end of the game. Lou and Thad are looked at for the scoring punch off the bench. Holiday controls the offense, and Iggy get's his where he can, while a lot of the gameplan involves feeding Brand in the post. The Sixers never call plays for Turner because there are too many vets ahead of him. And he don't have the green light because we are fighting for playoff position so Collins don't feel like letting arookie play thru their mistakes. The thing is Turner has been playing mistake free basketball.

But if he played on a team that didn't have him on a leash his numbers would be drastically differently. I have watched all the big names rookies play this year atleast a few times, but i have watched every Turner game with the exception of 3. It's not hard to tell that Turner will be an All Star caliber playing because he got every move in the book, an amazing rebounding prowess, nice court vision, and great defense. He is just on a short leash right now playing for an old school coach.

Oh and Q i just gave you the

Oh and Q i just gave you the stats Turner is still top 7 in all the important stats and top 3 in efficiency for rookies so if they go by stats how did he not make it? Can anybody explain this?

And UoE notice how many negatives you got usually because a lot of the stuff you post is just bliss ignorance that nobody agrees with. i like a lot of your post but most of them you seem to put no thought into like the one on this page.

It's cool tho I quess because Turner needs rest for the playoffs anyway beause every other rookie of the team besides Neal will be watch Turner play in the playoffs.

Is it a coincidence that he turned Ohio State from NIT team to Final Four favorite. Now that he's on the Sixers they transformed from bottom feeder to mid pak playoff team.....dude is a winner.

i agree with everything u posted bro...

It seems like they make choices like this based off markets and superficial stats or highlights...Turner's first game was better than many of these others rookies best game, I'm glad I'm not the only one who saw Turner play hard defense on both Wade or James while showing he can one day be a go to guy...he really reminds me of Grant Hill at times...if he ever gets that killer instinct and develops his outside shot he's going to have a solid career in Philadelphia...no reason he can't get 20/5/5 when he takes the next step as full time starter...interested in seeing if Iggy gets moved at the deadline, draft or off season...

7.5 PPG....some of you are talking as if this guy is having some kind of generation defining season. He is pretty marginal with all these other guys, and he was the odd man out. I dont see why theres an uproar. If anything, usually the lottery picks get an advantage in these situations.

i wanna see Turner become the player we hoped he could be

A lot of people compared him to Roy and that would be incredibly but I don't see him being that killer from deep...Now I can see him being a mid range player like Grant Hill and play that point forward/scorer Hill was in Detroit...I just don't think we'll get that if Iggy, Thad and Nocioni are in front of him and we keep giving the ball to Lou Williams(I hate Lou Williams, we gotta trade him for something of value)

UoE you're right they are not

UoE you're right they are not mind boggling stats, and i have never said that, but in comparison with the other rookies they are good. I am mad because I knew this would happen, i knew scrubs like Wes, Neal, Bledsoe, Favors, and Monroe were going to get picked over him because Turner hasn't living up to expectations. But if you take draft order away he has been one of the top 10 rookies all year easily. And like I said what don't show up in the stat sheets is the fact he is the best one ball and team defending rookie of this class right now. That speaks volumes. Now only that he is helping his team win, big games.

Turner's numbers are so midleading. First off Collins don't have Turner playing his aggressive game instead he has him playing mistake free basketball. Next year Turner will be allowed to be more aggressive. but I just don't like how Collins is taking Turner along so slow because sh!t like this happens and people are getting the wrong impression of Turner. Philly is happy with the pick. I wanted Turner, Favors, or Cousins but after watching the season unfold I don't even think Favors would get off the bench for Collins, and Cousins would of probably been suspended atleast once on this team the Sixers have a no tolerance policy for players getting kicked out of practice and questioning their coach. Plus Philly fans HATE players with poor body language thats why even tho Kobe is from here we don't like him because he got poor body language and an inflated ego.

Turner was the perfect personality for this team and will be the face of the Franchise along with Jrue in a few years.

@Scarecrow Turner does have a killer instinct. You can tell because he always wants to take the last shot, has already hitting a buzzer beater this year, and is always shooting the ball when the score is on a see-saw. But Scarecrow you and me, unlike the rest of these cats know why Turner's scoring numbers are so low. Turner is usually on the floor with Lou Williams who is a straight ball hog, he shoots everytime he gets the ball. Meeks shoots a free everytime he gets the ball. Holiday has even been hogging lately. And we all know Iggy takes many ill advised shots. There are simply not enough possessions for Turner to get the production he is capable of getting. On another team in a different scenario and he right up there in scoring with Wall and Cousins, ahead of Fields. Not to mention hia rebounding numbers for a guard when given over 30 minutes are ridiclous.

@UoE

@UoE you are missing the point. Outside of Griffin no rookie is being that great. You can aruge Wall, and Cousin but both of their teams succc and the arrival of Wall and Cousins have DONE NOTHING to make them better.

The arrival of Turner has. But you said Turner didn't deserve to be in and I asked why but you never answered. Is Turner playing great, no probabley not, but he is playing his role great and that is why the sixers are winning with the roster they have.

But is Wes Johnson playing great, is Favors playing great, is Neal playing great, is Bledsoe playing great? Monroe has a few games where he point up some good production but overall he hasn't been great either.

MY WHOLE POINT IS NOT WHETHER HE IS PLAYING GREAT, BUT THAT TURNER IS EASILY PLAYING BETTER THEN THE NAMES I LISTED ABOVE AND HIS PLAY IS A HUGE REASON WHY THE SIXERS ARE THE 7TH SEED RIGHT NOW AND TRYING TO MOVE UP.

So please instead of telling me what Turner isn't doing tell me what the players I namd above are doing that make them more deserving then Turner...? You can bring stats into play, team records, film footage, and I promise you will not be able to formulate an argument as to how Turner should be one of the 10 rookies on that team.

So stop hating and give me actually reasons and proof as to why...if you can't do that then you lost. In fact I know you can't do that so just waive you white flag.

Turner hasnt made Philly

Turner hasnt made Philly better at all. The recent resurgance has been because of Iggy being more of a team first guy, Brand playing infinitely better, Holiday playing solid point, and Williams adding instant offense off the bench.

Williams shoots 38% from the

Williams shoots 38% from the field, and is a black hole because everybody knows he is going to shoot not to mention he is a terrible on ball defender and commits a lot of turnovers and makes bone head plays.

Iggy resurgance? He is averaging 14 PPG and not even scoring at an efficient clip. Yeah Holiday has been playing very solid but he still is getting owned by more experience PG's and only aveaged like 2 more assists then turnoves. The last 4 games Holiday has been playing terribly but the Sixers still won 3 out of the 4 because Turner was able to fill in and run point while Holiday was struggling. I knew Brand would be playing better, but he hasn't been playing infinitly better, what he is doing best is rebounding better. Last year he averaged 13 n 7, this year 15 and almost 9. That;s not that big of a difference but Collins knows how to use him and he is in better shape. But he isn't playing out of his mind. Not only that like I said I watch the games, Turner always has a positive influence on the court and his effiencey and plus-minus numbers back it up. Start watching some Sixer games instead of talking out of your ass and you will know what I mean.

In Philly it's hard to find people who don't want Iggy and Lou Williams traded because we watch the games and realize the team would be better without them, especially Turner. And we especially need to rid of ourselves lf Lou Ball Hog Williams.

Turner has had a part in the recent succees of the team...

The Team wins in spite of having Lou Williams taking bad shots, Iggy taking control in bad situations and playing Brand out of position at Center for half the game...we need a Noah type, a true defensive presence in the middle...one agile enough to run with Holiday, Turner, Young, Meeks,Speights, Iggy and top 20 prospect in 2011...Brand is the leader of this team, second is Iggy, third will be Turner...he's the future...

Mr. 19134, why would you copy and paste something directly from NBA.com, and put it in a post right next to your own words?...just curious

Philly is 7th in the East,

Philly is 7th in the East, Minni is LAST in the West. Stats are too even to not give Evans winning record the edge.Just a poor job selecting imo, everyone is saying how bad Turner is playing yet if you watch the game it is not that Turner is playing bad, he just has little oppurtunity to thrive, Igoudala is playing the exact role Turner would be comfortable in, and Jrue Holiday is not the greatest decision maker, and not the best in getting his teammates involved (hes a great talent and plays well but hes soo young people need to give him a break). Not only that but when Iggy is out, Thaddeus Young and Turner share the touches and minutes instead of Turner just occupying his role. Yet Turner plays his role, does a great job being extremely versatile , and aside from a bad shooting percentage he helps his team win in all aspects of the game.

BTW the only reason I target

BTW the only reason I target Wes Johnson is because Timberwolves are the 2nd worst team in the league, Gary Neals San Antonio is 1st in the league, and Bledsoe is playing PG.

he gave credit to Nba.com...

It was right above the whole " the greatest omission from the Rookie game..." paragraph...Mr.19134...I thought i was alone in wanting to trade Williams for a Center, I'd even include Hawes or Speights if the player is a legitimate double double shot blocking machine...Williams is instant offense but we need impact defense, so trading him and one of our underwhelming young bigs for a legitimate Shot blocking/rebounding center...
