Hey do you know anything about P. Karnowski? He’s a 7 foot Polish center and Duke is apparently taking a look at him.

Is he any good? Doesn’t seem as athletic as some of the Euro prospects you’ve already showed us.

This was simply stating Matt Howard was eligible due to his age. Howard had a terrible season this year after starting with big name club Olympiacos he ended up leaving the Euroleague after being released and is now playing in Germany.

As for Valanciunas, he wasn’t eligible because he doesn’t play in the Euroleague. His Rytas team played Eurocup this season which is somewhat of a second tier competition.

When it comes to voting the Rising Star award the winner is selected by the Euroleague head coaches

See there is something about Karnowski and Duke on Bleacher Report, but I heard the strongest connections right now are with Gonzaga. He is also reportedly visiting Wisconsin and Nebraska:

Tyler saw more of him than I did in the 2011 Hoop Summit, but he is definitely a massive human being, legit 7 footer. More along the lines of the slow, lumbering big man, he is a good passer and has a soft touch. First heard about him in the U17 World Championships, where he and Mateusz Ponitka were the big players on a Poland team that claimed the Silver Medal. He averaged 14.5 ppg and 11 rpg with 2.5 apg, 2 bpg.

This past summer, he played on both the U19 World Championship Polish team and the U18 European Championship. He averaged double figures in both, including a monster 29 point game against Croatia in Poland’s last U19 game. Not sure how he would adapt to the college game, but he should be a presence early on. His NBA prospects are limited by his lack of athleticism, but he is a skilled 7 footer who would be a nice pick-up for any of the schools mentioned. He probably would not play much on Duke, but he would be a huge body for them to simulate against in practice.

Why wouldn’t he play much at Duke? All we have at center after this year is the third Plumlee (lol).

Why else wouldn’t he be able to play at Duke?

The Rising Star Trophy recognizes the best Euroleague player who was under the age of 22 on July 1 of the summer before the season started. Mirotic was one of several young stars of whom this year’s Euroleague head coaches thought highly. Partizan mt:s big man Milan Macvan finished second in the voting, while center Furkan Aldemir of Galatasaray Medical Park and Olympiacos Piraeus guard Kostas Sloukas also garnered votes.

I am guessing that Mason will play the majority of center for Duke this year, with Ryan Kelly likely next to him at the 4. That would more than likely give Karnowski a small window for PT, that is if he beats out Marshall "The Third" Plumlee (entirely possible). The Blue Devils still have a shot at adding to the front court with Amile Jefferson or Tony Parker, plus Josh Hairston should get some more PT at the 4 next year. Just saying that while there rotation looks pretty slim, Karnowski might not just step in and take minutes. Ultimately, think he is going to go to Gonzaga or one of those other schools instead of Duke, though.

I also think Gonzaga. They (and to a lesser extent California/Cinncinati) have been the schools connected to him for the past year or 2.At the same time it has always seemed like college was choice b. for him.

I think he would be perfect in the middle for the Zags

We have frequently written about Przemek Karnowski, the 7-foot Polish center who ESPN’s Fran Fraschilla described as possessing soft hands. Though the center has drawn interest from programs like Gonzaga, Duke, Kansas, and Marquette (among others), it seems to us that Karnowski would be a perfect fit in Spokane.

At Gonzaga, Karnowski would potentially be able to see immediate minutes. Sam Dower returns, and will likely be the starter, but with the loss of Ryan Spangler, there is a need for frontcourt depth. After undergoing a second redshirt season, Kelly Olynyk will see time at both the 4 and the 5, and the starting power forward spot will probably be filled by Elias Harris. Since Dower and Olynyk have similar offensive skillsets — both are adept at flashing to the high post and are not traditional back to the basket bigs — Karnowski (if he was to commit to Gonzaga) would be matched with Olynyk off the bench, while Dower would start along with Harris.

According to Rafal Juc, Karnowski has crossed Nebraska, Washington State, Utah, and Marquette off his list. So who are his finalists? Duke, Gonzaga, California, and Kansas. As we previously stated, Gonzaga makes the most sense, with Cal slightly trailing.

Duke and Kansas, on the other hand, make the least sense … unless Karnowski believes he needs a year of development. At Duke, Karnowski would face a depth chart including Marshall Plumlee, Mason Plumlee, Alex Murphy, and Ryan Kelly. In Lawrence, the Jayhawks have a recruiting class filled with bigs (including Perry Ellis and Zach Peters), not to mention the return of Kevin Young and the emergence of Jamari Traylor. If Karnowski decides he needs more time to adjust, then either of these programs could jump to the forefront of his recruitment. However, if the 7-footer desires playing time over a year spent working on his game, it could be a two-team race between Gonzaga and Cal.

    – Matt Giles

Mikey V Summary (Yes, I am trying to make something shorter): Looks like it is down to Gonzaga, Cal, Duke and Kansas. If he wants more immediate PT, Gonzaga and Cal look like the choices. If he wanted to develop more slowly, than Duke and KU could be possible destinations. Duke would seem to make the most sense as a third choice behind Kansas, as the Jayhawks are bringing in a stable of big bodies.
