tuck243ParticipantKD missing 20-25 games mean he #8 in the league? WTF??!!
Also, what’s Paul George’s rank?

Jayhawks2011ParticipantThese are simply season ratings. Meaning George who probably wont play this year should not be on the list. Also, they are ESPN so they are probably doing this for clicks on the website.

machu46ParticipantGeorge is expected to miss the year, so he wasn’t ranked. Durant (based on their projections) is expected to miss 1/3 of the year, so his rating declined as a result. One of the raters gave him a 9/10 originally and changed it to a 6/10 because you’re getting 66% of the production.
They aren’t saying he’s the 8th best player in the NBA. Simply that due to the decreased minutes, he won’t be able to put up the same volume of numbers as those other guys. The fact that he’s still 8th is a testament to how good they think he is.

tuck243ParticipantHe’s expected to miss 20 games… Which is only 25% of the season… Even with KD missing 20 games there aren’t 7 players better than him in this league…

machu46ParticipantThe guys that rated everyone said they were basing it off of Durant only playing 50 games this year. And they aren’t saying there are 7 better players. They are saying there are 7 players that will have a bigger impact on their team in 82 games than he will in 82 games considering he won’t play in 32 of them (according to them).
It’s basically about their total numbers, so even if Durant averages 35 points per game for those 50 games (1750 points), it still pales in comparison to a guy like Curry averaging 25 a game for 80 games (2000 points).
They already said that if Durant were playing the full season, he’d be the #2 rated player. He was just knocked down the list because of the number of games they’re expecting him to miss.

IndianaBasketballParticipantSo basically they’re valuing quantity more than quality, which still is just kind of weak.
IF they’re putting so much stock into quantity, then these really aren’t the BEST player rankings. Just the players who’ll produce the most quantity.

IndianaBasketballParticipantIF LBJ had an injury and was out a few weeks, do you think ESPN would DARE drop him 6 spots?
I highly effin doubt it.
I understand that there are a couple of factors that go into these rankings and Kevin Durant will miss about a month or so, but he should not fall out of the top five.
I’m honestly starting to get sick of ESPN on several levels.

nill650Participantkd will miss more than 20 games, and even if they do bring him back that fast,it will be less minutes in a non impact form and not the kd we know.
I expect westbrook to step up and carry the team enough that they make the 5 or 6 seed even with kd slow start to the season.
I also think that westbrook will play a bigger role as a result going forward on this team if it intends to win in the playoffs this year.
I’m not saying kd is normally overated,he’s not…but westbrook is still extremely underated.
espn is poorly managed

ballislyfe25ParticipantI used to leave on ESPN/Sportscenter for background noise and watch it late night/early morning. Now, it’s NBA TV.
ESPN is an incredibly biased media outlet and seems to operate more in the best interest of people with money, not their viewers. They were too busy making Josh Gordon look like an absolute criminal, while a visible owner of a prominent NFL team (Jim Irsay) barely made headlines on ESPN for his legal troubles. Then, after some time, they essentially helped Irsay reconstruct his public image. This piece seemingly picked up no steam and fell by the wayside.
I follow basketball through Grantland, the NBA media network (which really has some phenomenal pieces and programs) and more local media outlets. Obviously, Grantland is a branch of the ESPN network, however, they are attracting viewers and ESPN is catching on. All about the $$$ with them, no respect for the common fan and definitely none for the advanced fan.

BothTeamsPlayedHardParticipantTo be fair, ESPN has this problem of devaluing the playoffs and vastly overrating “their” guys.
3. Anthony Davis- 0 playoff games. It has only been two years, but they are ranking him like he has done something, other than be a feature for their magazine (so that is worth how many spots).
4. Russell Westbrook- Easily second best player on his own team.
2 & 5. Chris Paul and Blake Griffin- Clippers are 12-18 in the playoffs and never won a series in less than 7 games. The front court is why they got manhandled by San Antonio and Memphis a few years back, and while Griffin took a step forward last year there is no proof that it would be any different now. Paul is great, but what justifies him being considered to be a better player than Tony Parker?
6. Stephen Curry- 9-10 in the playoffs. It seems premature to regard him this highly.
7. Kevin Love- 0 playoff games, in seven season never been the best player on the 9th best team in the West (but he always makes himself available to ESPN people).
8. Kevin Durant- 2nd best player in the league, stole LeBron’s MVP, makes OKC’s supporting cast look infinitely better than it is.
9. James Harden- Is the 10th best player the guy Harden “guards” because the other team certainly has no problem knocking his team out in the first round.
10. Dwight Howard- Has not been the same player since he got Stan Van fired. Houston allowed 44 points in the paint per game with him and Asik backing him up. Also, he was completely outclassed by LaMarcus Aldridge in the playoffs.
11. Carmelo Anthony- Missed the playoffs for first time in his career, so his star numbers on bad teams are so less impressive than that of Kevin Love and Anthony Davis. On the other hand, he spend most of his career being criticized for not getting deeper in the playoffs, which by ESPN’s logic means… who knows.
12. Joakim Noah- If Derrick Rose is healthy, the Bulls can win a title. When Joakim Noah was healthy an Derrick Rose was not, the Bulls frontcourt was outclassed by Nene and Gortat in a first round drubbing.
14. Marc Gasol- Why is it so hard to accept he is the best center in basketball right now?
15. Tony Parker- 4 RINGS. Pfft. La dee friggin da.
17. Dirk Nowitzki- The Mavs gave the Spurs the best series they faced in the playoffs, and were a 49-win team.
19. DeMarcus Cousins- 0 playoff games, and in four years never better than 13th in the West.
21. Tim Duncan- 5 RINGS.
22. Al Jefferson- Right now, what in his body of work in inferior to Kevin Love, DeMarcus Cousins, or Anthony Davis. He took the pitiful, awful, historically bad Bobcats to the playoffs. In ESPN-land, this apparently means very little.
23. Kyrie Irving- 0 playoff games, but LeBron has wonderful coattails to ride.
25. Serge Ibaka- Wake me when he is the better player than Zach Randolph in the playoffs.
26. Al Horford- He was forgiven for his injury moreso than Rose?
27. Dragic over Rose? Even with the injury risk?
28. Derrick Rose- With Paul George out, he is what makes the East interesting this year.
30. Andre Drummond- 0 playoff games, and really has not done anything to regard him so highly.
33. Zach Randolph- In ESPN-land, he was so much better when he was piling up big numbers on bad teams.
40. Kobe Bryant- In ESPN-land, unlike many ahead of him, he has to win to justify his star status.0 - Posted on: Tue, 10/28/2014 - 5:58am #953218
