MopgrassParticipantRotoworld said, “It’s worth noting that one GM selecting in the top 10 was told flat-out by his medical staff to not draft the 7’0″ prospect.”
I think it’s a smokescreen (as always), but teams who aren’t in a hurry should grab him.

Clean187ParticipantJust curious, which aspect of it do you think is a smokescreen?
The severity of the injury, or that Cleveland is still going to take him #1, and is using the injury to leverage more for the #1 pick?

negguaryParticipantI can see if you said top three due to the talent and franchise changing player that you could still get in turn due to Embid’s injury. But Embid still has too much potential and "what if" to him that you can’t let him pass by you after 13 picks. We gota be realistic here.

Lotto StudParticipantWhy would I continue to consider damaged goods, especially when this injury just occurred while the jury was still out on the previous? There are guys who have that type of capability to dominate being the same type of caliber every other year or so and slide due to not showing enough performance from being hit with the "potential" word, so what’s the logic of taking someone in this sense? So Sam Bowie & Greg Oden are still not enough to just say no to damaged big men?
Damned if you do, damned if you don’t. I’d rather be damned for not selecting him.

negguaryParticipantI didn’t say top three but to say don’t touch him within the first 14 picks is mindboggling. Because if you do and it works, man if it works……..need I say more!

BA30ParticipantI am happy the surgery went well and I wish him the best. From everything I heard he is a good kid. The right situation is probably key right now. Boston or LA are good spots.

Memphis MadnessParticipantEmbiid is already 20.
Embiid’s freshman stats: 11.2 points and 8.1 boards. .626% from the field.
Olden Polynice’s stats as a 20 year old sophomore: 13.0 points, and 7.6 rebounds. .603% from the field.
Olden Polynice went 8th in the 1987 NBA draft. Polynice once played for the Sacramento Kings.
The Kings have the 8th pick in the 2014 draft.

Memphis MadnessParticipantDo you take Embiid even if he only has 5 or 6 really good years? Like if he is the next Ralph Sampson?
(Ralph Sampson ALSO played for the Sacramento Kings.)

tuck243Participantis always in the lottery then you take him… What do you have to lose? You always in the damn lottery, which is for drafting for upside and ‘potential’ stars…

JoeWolf1I don’t think he slips past 8, after the 1st and 2nd teir guys there are guys like McDermott, Harris, Staus, Saric and a slew of other guys who are far from sure fire prospects.
What is McDermott is just a glorified Steve Novak, or Harris proves to be a similar to Avery Bradley? There are always "what if’s" in the draft, but I don’t think you pass on Embiid for a guy who is a 3rd tier prospect who very well may not pan out either.
Choosing between those 2nd teir guys and Embiid will be tough, maybe a team will take a shot considering his rehab is only 4-6 months ( less time than Noel had at the same time last year ) maybe they don’t, but I don’t think Joel gets past Sacramento, and I don’t think he goes off the board before Orlando.

Memphis MadnessParticipantThe Lakers almost have to take him at 7.
Rebuild around Embiid, next year’s first rounder, and free agents.
Possibly the guy with the most upside in the draft. And at 7?
if he stinks, the Lakers have enough money to buy their way out of their mistakes.

JoeWolf1An interesting point. A big market team, like LA, has the luxury of being able to bring in free agents. The Jazz or Kings and are more reliant on the draft. Even Boston hasn’t brought in a major free agent since nabbing the last two of the big 3 in a sign and trade, and despite their rich history, the Celts aren’t that big market player like LA.
L.A. waited on Bynum, and he paid off for them big time, although his career was ultimately cut short, LA won two rings with Andrew being a critical part of their squad at the time. Having the ability to throw another big body at Dwight Howard helped keep the series out of reach for a very solid Orlando team.
L.A. wants to win now, but they can bring in free agents like no other team in the NBA over the past 30 years. They could justify taking a chance on the young big man.

MopgrassParticipantIt’s certainly not the win-now approach. I would want Embiid, but Kobe might choke Jim Buss to death over it.

JoeWolf1I just read LA is bringing in Napier. There are so many teams looking to move, I’m half tempted to submit my big board as my mock, lol.

The GoatParticipantNo way he goes past Sixers at 10. If you have multiple picks you’d definitely consider the gamble (Magic, Celtics and Sixers). Im thinking he’ll go 6 to Boston.
