after this year he’s a RFA should philly offer him the max this year and not wait around to match. Joel is in such a rare case. On one hand he’s a game changing talent with the personality of a David Ortiz. He’s going to get max money healthy or not. On the other hand he’s only played in 13% of his games in 3 years. If any other player had that attached to him there’s no way he gets a max. Which is why I’m so curious to see what the sixers do. Do you wait a year and see how he is health wise? unless it’s a career ending injury does it even matter given his past?  A guy like him seems loyal and you shouldn’t let him go to other places to see greener pastures. I know things in philly look good but even in a weak east philly is still 5 years away from actually competing for a title shot. They have tons of talent but they still have boys in a mans league. Of course that could all change if a game changing talent goes their but that’s all speculation.

I’d wait to Christmas, if no injuries, then give him the max.

rather pay him now where you can get somewhat of a bargain say 5 yrs between 115 to 130 mill as opposed to if he is able to play the whole season and then the bag goes up to 150 mill which is fine, but you could save yourself 20 mill. Offering 120-130 mill now is good for both sides plus I just don’t see how agent advising him to walk away from a guaranteed 120-130 mill injured or not especially considering his injury history and I dint see embeast waking away from that. Win win in doing it now.

You are absolutely right that the injury history makes this interesting. There have been other players that have had injury issues that ultimately received the max, but I cant think off the top of my head a guy playing as little as Embiid…

This year is about continuing what he did last year, but hopefully over the course of 60-70 games (accounting for minute restrictions and back-to-back limitations) if he does that, then there is 0% chance he doesn’t get the max. Frankly, even if he only plays around 30 games again he is likely to get the max because the talent is undeniable.

I doubt the 76ers would play such a hard-nosed game, but they could really let the season play out, if its another major issue where he only plays 30 games (or some other low number) they can simply offer the restricted tender and wait to see if anyone will offer a max (Id assume the likelihood is very high) and simply match the offer sheet.

My bet is he received the max sometime after February and there is no distraction for the later portion of the season and playoffs, the only way that doesn’t happen is another massive injury.

Also if you give him the max and he is forced to retire due to injury insurance will foot the bill. At least that’s how it was in the past, haven’t kept up with CBA changes so please correct me if I’m wrong. Thus there is little to no risk to the team. If he’s healthy he easily deserves the max, if he’s forced to retire someone else pays the bill. The only risk is if he has constant minor injuries that force him to miss game but not bad enough to make him retire.

I had no clue about the insurance aspect. I should know this and think I do but if you retire due to injury is it still a cap hit?? Also would he have to agree to retire or could your medical staff force him too.

In the past if a player was forced to retire due to on court injuries insurance would pay the rest of their salary and there would be no cap hit. Thus teams weren’t punished for a guy blowing out both knees.

Chris Bosh is the most recent example that I am aware of. Miami got all that cap space back. If fact they were pushing him to retire last year because they wanted that space.

Look for the Sixers to extend Embiid’s qualifying offer and sign him early next season.  Embiid will determine his value through health and performance.  The 76ers can sign their FA next summer and then seal it up with a huge contract to Embiid…as long as he doesn’t win MVP his contract shouldn’t be more than 25-30 mil per.

As much as I love Embiid…I don’t think he is going to stay healthy…I hope I’m wrong.

Philly have until around 31st October to renew Embiid so cannot see how he goes next season and make an offer mid season. I think they should do something incentive based so the more he plays the more he gets. I feel that Embeast’s advisors would want him to sign any reasonable deal given his injury history, at least he has some longer term security then.

You are right, I thought the 76ers could give him an $8mil qualifying offer and then sign him. That would have to be this year though.

If they are gonna go all in then they need to go ALL IN.

    Max him out TOMORROW.

Go get Traitor Danny’s box of goodies that is Smart, Bradley, and Jae Crowder for Okafor, cash, and a future 2nd round pick. TJ McConnell?  Looks like a Celtic! Throw him in there, too.

Then you have a backcourt of Fultz and Bradley with Marcus Smart off the bench.

Crowder shores up the front line that includes Simmons and Embiid as your top two options.  Saric is somewhere in that rotation as are Robert Covington and Richaun Holmes.

Looks like Avery Bradley is a one year rental, unless they resign him to big money, but he should be a good veteran presence and adds a lot to the team.  He can play in a backcourt that either features Fultz or Simmons. Or a bench guy like Smart/Reddick/Justin Anderson.

Lots of ways they can go…

Even if AB and Crowder aren’t long-term keepers, they help speed up The Process ™ NOW, and Marcus Smart IS a long-term guy worth keeping.  Gives them toughness, defense, and some scoring/ball handling at either guard spot.

If you could have said before the draft that they could get Smart for just Okafor and a 2nd rounder, you would do it, right?  NOW, you also get two really solid vets thrown in, one of which is on a really good contract and is a modern-day 3 and D-esque combo forward.

Crowder, Bradley, and Smart are all solid to really good defenders and allow you to play big or small…
