Dazzling Dunks and Basketball BloopersParticipantUp until recently Mudiay was considered to be far and away the best guard prospect in this year’s draft, but I think that Russell could actually surpass him and be the first guard taken overall. The more I watch him play, the more I’m convinced he will be an absolute star at the next level. His offensive game is so advanced for his age and he can play either guard position. His vision and ball-handling ability is incredible and he seems to have an excellent feel for the game in terms of when to look to distribute and when to look to take over offensively. Him and Okafor are clearly the two most impressive freshman I’ve seen so far this year, but I think that Russell’s ceiling might actually be higher, considering that his game seems perfectly suited for the modern NBA game.
Granted I haven’t seen enough of Mudiay to really make an informed decision over which of the two is better right now. However, I think that it’s definitely a real debate now and I wouldn’t be shocked to see Russell drafted first.

TimberTrollParticipantI think Mudiay still has the advantage due to his athleticism, but I personally like Russell more.

Taylor Gang MikeParticipantIts Russell.. Because he can pass, shoot and hes long and can get steals in the passing lanes…. I compare him to Steph Curry because of the lack of extreme hops, but they both have really good feels for the game and can really pass. They both can get hot and shoot the lights out. D Russ has came a long way, he has really progressed this year into a top 5 lock.
He is killing Indiana right now BTW

OhCanada-ParticipantAt this point I’ve seen Russell play a lot and haven’t seen much of Mudiay except online videos of games and highlights. Russell seems to show something new every game and he improves very fast. My favourite trait about Russell is he always finds a way to create good scoring opportunities no matter how tough the defence is.
Although Mudiay is a more traditional PG with high end athletisism and a fiery competitive spirit. I think he will be like a more athletic Jrue Holiday.
It depends what the team is looking for and what pieces they already have.

cabbycabParticipantRussell is so impressive. I also see shades of Steph Curry when I watch him play. They are both offesive prodigies and the game appears to be so easy for them.

HitsterParticipantMudiay in my opinion has always been better but Russell is looking a potential top 5 pick contender and seems to be on the rise. I figure a lot will depend on workouts but Mudiay will need to perform as the NBA scouts will have watched Russell in the NCAA and have a good measure of where he is. Mudiay playing in China could be harder to quantify as a prospect.

ThepessimestParticipantI have watched Mudiay only in small portions; that mostly being in high school…but the feel that Russell has for the game of basketball is beautiful. And you cannot teach that. He just understands when to pass…how to pass it… etc. He isn’t as good as Penny but he has that kind of feel. And watching him his teammates LOVE to play with him.
When I have watched Mudiay; it’s not that he doesn’t make good plays…because he certainly does. But the plays he makes just aren’t the same in terms of seeing things 2 and 3 steps ahead. I like both prospects a lot but just because of my own biases I really prefer Russell to Mudiay. I absolutely love great passers and players with great feel. Nothing like watching that brand of basketball.

sitlbitoParticipantYou’re not looking at the same player, even if they both play point guard,Mudiay is more of a John Wall type player with huge upside(though I think less out of control on and off the court, more of a calm personality). With D’Angelo ,you look at skill first,he can basically do whatever he wants with the ball,I’d like to see him shoot less threes though. I’d say Philly should look more at Russel, the lakers more at Mudiay(considering these two are the BPA at the time for these teams)

chaParticipantAs much as I like Russell’s game as it reminds me of Brandoy Roy, Manu Ginobli and James Harden, I still believe that Mudaiy is a special talent. Physical tools alone, he’s virtually a lock to be one of the more gifted point guards in the NBA once he enters. He is fast, big and athletic packed into a point guard’s game. Talk about versatility. Plus, I seem to recall a player similar to Russell who also went to the same university that didn’t pan out, Evan Turner. People kept saying he’d be the next Brandon Roy or Manu Ginobli coming out of the draft. Similarly, he’s tall with a good handle, good passing ability and a great feel for the game. Unfortunately, he is floating around the league as a solid player but he doesn’t play much defense nor can be considered an all star.
Mudiay reminds me of a Baron Davis/Tyreke Evans type of player with the speed and unselfishness of John Wall.

TripleDoubleScoutParticipantyour comparisons of both prospects are pretty sound imo but the line about mudiay being as fast as john wall may be going a bit too far.

sitlbitoParticipantLooks like D’angelo Russel is already a better shooter than Evan Turner will ever be. He’s still taking a lot of threes, but just judging by his shooting mechanics,it does look really nice.

don042488ParticipantThe difference between D’Angelo Russell & Evan Turner is that D’Angelo actually can shoot and finish consistently at the rim, not like Turner who can hit 3s, has an inconsistent mid range shot, & at times can’t finish at the basket

jrrider_34ParticipantI think that both players provide very different aspects the the same 1/2 positions; Mudiay is an athletically dominant slasher who has a knack for finding the open man or the roller in the post, but in no way is he John Wall. Wall in High School and college was on another level athletically, as he is now. Mudiay comps much more to a Mid career Baron Davis, equally dependant on his power as his speed. He is a safer top 3 pick, due mostly to his physical profile. Russell is a more creative and (on court) thoughtful player, although his lack of explosion is a stark contrast to Mudiays slick athleticism. The Ginobili/Roy comparison is apt, however.
And in regards to the Evan Turner comparison, Turner was always a player who created shots out of necessity rather than a genuine feel for timing and spacing as Russell has.

don042488ParticipantTo know who you rather have on your team think athleticism or skill. Who you rather have on your team Baron Davis or Jason Kidd? Jason Kidd is the obvious choice…John Wall or Steph Curry? Steph Curry is the obvious choice…Steve Francis or Steve Nash? Mmm, idk I would go with Nash. So that’s 3 times skills & fundamentals beat out raw athleticism…I rather D’Angelo Russell on my team
