I know a few members are big fans of his….And I have to agree, this dude will be a steal in the late teens or 20’s and in my opinion, will be the best from this draft.

He can defend, rebound, he’s athletic, unselfish, a good passer, like Rondo as he also is a bad shooter which he needs to work on.

Is there anyone who is not a fan of his? If so why not, and give me a reason teams should draft Ennis over Payton.

Sometimes it baffles me how a player like Marcus Smart gets hated on for not being a good shooter but then someone like Elfrid Payton can be a great player even though he has the same limitations.  Not saying you are guilty of this mostly talking about the media.

I think the only reason why this happens is bc of the projections of where guys will go. When looking to draft a player in the top 5-10, you dont want a major weakness like bad shooting/shot selection. So people will get on him about that and say he may not be worthy of the draft position bc of it. When looking in the 20s, its common to have 1 or 2 holes in your game that you need to work on, so people dont really focus on it as much. You usually have good teams in the 20s that are looking for specialists, whereas the bad teams up top are looking for great all around, potential star type players.

I’m not bashing on Smart. Nobody has the same expectations for Payton… which is why his shooting % is not seen as a big weakness. Payton doesn’t have Smart’s strength, but he’s taller and a great defender as well. I have the feeling Payton is a better passer.

The difference IMO between Smart and Payton is Payton has great shot selection while Smart jacks up 6 3’s a game despite being a poor shooter. Also, Payton is a better passer.

Payton has based his game around being a bad shooter.  He takes long strides to the rim and can attack defenders playing off him, like Rondo does.  Smart doesn’t attack in the same manner, preferring to use his physicality to get into the body of the defender, so defenders laying off him hurts his game more.  Payton has the footwork to enable him to succeed despite being a poor shooter, while Smart will need to develop some consistency on his shot to succeed.

Payton’s need to constantly attack could lead to TOs, especially given his somewhat high dribble, but he has the ball-handling and passing ability to make it work with added experience.  His style of play can succeed without him being a great shooter, although developing a passable jump shot would really help him.

And, as drk3351 mentioned, Smart loves to take contested pull-up jump shots.  He is more confident in his 3-point shot off-the-dribble than any other player in this draft, so if he continues to shoot so poorly on such shots, he loses some value.

I do think Smart has room to improve as a shooter.  He kicks his legs out like crazy on every shot and, while he probably will always have a lot of sway in his jump shot, he could do with cleaning that up a little.  His shot selection and his desire to draw fouls on jump shots is positively Westbrookian.  And Smart has some shot making ability, so cleaning up his shot selection and getting more reps as a catch-and-shoot player could help him improve his efficiency.

I am pretty torn on whether Payton or Ennis is the better prospect.  Payton has greater upside if he lands in the perfect situation, but Ennis is really solid and could help any team.  Ennis does a great job getting into the body of the defender and makes really solid passes, even if he isn’t quite as creative as Payton.  Payton’s lack of strength means he has to rely more on speed and ball handling when he drives the lane and that can lead to difficult finishes at the rim and TOs when he is defended well.  When Ennis is defended well, he may not be productive, but he usually doesn’t try to do too much.

It is also important to note that, while Payton is only 5 months older than Ennis, he has three years of college experience.  This can be seen as either good or bad.  On one hand, it took Payton 3 years to really break out as an NBA prospect.  On the other hand, he has a lot of game experience for a player who is really young for a college sophomore, much less junior.

I’ve read on ESPN that Payton’s shooting touch looked just fine in 3 on 3 with other top prospects…  if it’s my pick I would rather have a high upside player like Payton, but I do agree that he needs to land with a good organization that will develop him properly.

After seeing his youtube scouting report from Draftexpress, he’s a jump shot away from being a really good player at the next level.
