IknoBall12ParticipantBeen watching NBAtv alot lately and they have been showing alot of bulls vs Jazz game 5 over the last few days. and im watching stockton run the point and the guy is good. but im also a huge deron williams fan and I dont personally like to think stockton is better than him but its just my opinion. I know stockton is the career ast leader and everything but i think deron can become better than him personally. Stockton had karl malone who was a great player and deron so far has had boozer and a couple of pretty good role players around him. i kno there are sum jazz fans and everyone else i really want to kno wat u guys think. WHo is better? and if u had to pick a point guard to run your team which guy are u giving the reigns to?

Lotto StudParticipantI take Williams. He gives you the ability to penetrate the lane & score or dish. Stockton who isn’t much of a threat @ all.

JoeWolf1Deron Williams is entering his 6th NBA season. Here are John Stockton’s stats in his 6th NBA season.
17.2 ppg ( not much of a threat?) 14.5 apg 2.9 rpg 2.7 spg .514 fg% .416 3pt % .819 ft %
I love Deron Williams as a player, and there aren’t many point guards I would pick over him, but John Stockton would be one of them. He has more assists and steals than anyone who has ever played professionally, it’s hard to go against that.

JoeWolf1Stockton is the man, the guy averaged 7.7 assists and 1.7 steals per game in under 30mpg at age 40 . Most of the players you see playing that late into their careers and that effectively are big men, and even those type of players are extremely rare.

Mr.Knick 32ParticipantI think we need the COMMON SENSE police on this one.
John Stockton is a hall of famer, the best passer ever in the NBA and a steal’s expert in the NBA. He was probably the best PG in the 90’s.
Whoever takes Williams over Stockton…. wow.

TylerTallenParticipantThis is an interesting question, because it pits a very athletically, smart modern point guard against the much less athletic, “prototypical” point guard of 80’s and 90’s basketball. Stockton played in an era where not only was there not an emphasis placed on your point guard being athletic/dynamic, but there simply wasn’t much of an option to have someone that athletic who was smart enough to run the team. You never saw John Stockton rise up for a put-back slam or barrel down the lane for a crowd-lifting one-handed dunk.
I think no question Deron Williams is more physically gifted and would absolutely dominate in 1v1, but basketball is 5 on 5. As much as it pains me to say it (grew up supporting the Illini, and D-Will is one of my top 3 favorite players in the league), I’ve got to go with the all-time assists and steals leader for now. If D-Will stays perched atop the league’s list of PGs (like he was last year) for a few more years, then I might change my mind.

JoeWolf1Stockton’s last season was 2002-2003 in which he averaged 10.8 ppg 7.7 apg and 1.7 steals per game at age 40 in under 30 minutes per game and he was an iron man he played in all 82 games for most of his career, including his last season. 2002-2003 is the modern era and he was more than capable 10-12 years past his prime. If Stockton were in his prime today he would be just as good because he was a flat out basketball player, he didn’t go up for put back slams, but he was very quick and had the best court vision of anyone I’ve seen play.

billykParticipantStockton also laid some tough screens… He was good at those back door screens, his three point shooting, on ball defense, ball handling and passing would translate to any era…

japhonzaParticipantYou can’t compare dwill to John period. John is a beast John iq was serious and back then you can hand check. Can you really see dwell playing back then? He would have to change his game, he wouldn’t come down the paint at all. He would get flat line. John was a pure pg with a jay. There offense was the pick and roll and you couldn’t stop it. Today John Stockton is Nash and u would take him before dwill. Nothing against dwill but u rather have Nash. He pick and chose whEn to score.

Tyreke JohnsonParticipantIs this even a serious question? Deron Williams is a good player and all and a top 2 PG in today’s game, depending on if you prefer him or Chris Paul but against John Stockton? You have got to be kidding me, Stockton was a flat out baller, he could shoot, pass, defend and was even a decent rebounder for his size, do not be mistaken that just because he played with Malone that it made him better, they both benefited from playing with each other and thats why they are one of the top duos in NBA history and though they worked great as a unit their individual skills were both very superior hence both having HOF careers, I would take Stockton any day to run my team over Williams.

the barronParticipantWithout a doubt John Stockton. It would have been nice if they both played together with D-Will at the 2. Maybe then Jordan would have to guard somebody(i liked Hornacek but he wouldn’t make Jordan work on D as much). Stockton is the definition of a PG. A Hall of Famer who was tougher than any of today’s players and always showed class. D-Will is great and all but Stockton is a legend.

SwatLakeCityParticipantI like dwill too, but he is no Stockton. Stockton is better, and no one can beat his record. Yes Dwill can do practically everything Stockton could but Stockton did it his entire career and even in his forties. If he was playing today he would probably average about 13, 10, and about 2 steals. Amazing at his age, but dwill in about 10 or 15 years will be no where close to the level he is at now. All the wear and tear on his legs and the injuries he gets would eventually get to him. I don’t compare Dwill to Stockton to me he is more of a Jason Kidd or Gary Payton, but Stockton himself is not a bad comparison either.

——————————————————————————————————————————————-You kidding? Stockton dominated in the 90s. An era which had plenty of athletic point guards from Kevin Johnson to Tim Hardaway, Jason Kidd and Gary Payton.
Stockton was incredibly efficient from the field. Was the greatest passer of his generation and was a good defender too making 5 NBA all-defensive second teams. Pretty much Steve Nash with better D.
