Dunk Contest
This was the best dunk contest in last ten years. Only problem alot of missed dunks but great entertainment. I think nike needs to jump on Blake and get him his own shoe line unlike lebron he participates in dunk contest for the fans he is great for the game. Hes got lebron like game without the entitlement i love watching blake play and hes only gonna get better the league has found its next mega star ride his coat tail.
Demar DeRozan's second dunk first round was the best imo. That was incredible.
Blake was obviously gonna win.. no matter what he did, they gave him a 46 so he wouldnt miss the finals and beat derozan.
I think Ibaka and Mcgee were most impressive.
Although the Blake elbow one was pretty nice
DeRozan will fall in the Rudy Gay/J.R. Smith category now......players to enter more than 1 time & not win it......This was his year.
Sorry to say but this thing is definitely fixed. McGees first 2 dunks were pretty nice but if derozan only gets 44 because of too many attempts why did McGee get all those attempts? Are you kidding me giving Ibaka 45 for that dunk! 2 or 3 of the people who gave him 9 for that dunk got 50 for doing the same dunk but not as well. Derozans 1st dunk was better then Griffins 2nd in my opnion and all Griffins first dunk really was is a variation of a 360 it wasnt worth 49 at all! This wasnt even close to one of the best dunk contests but if properly judged we would have seen Ibaka/McGee and Derozan in the finals and we wouldve gotten some real excitement. The car thing was just stupid, the arm in the rim dunk was nice I cant lie, but Im sure Derozan and Ibaka had much more for us.
all you people need to jump off Griffins dicck! Im pissed this was Derozans night, he wouldve had something better then his 2nd round dunk! We should be talking about him getting his shoe line, WE SHOULD BE TALKING ABOUT HIM WINNING 2 IN A ROW. We would be talking about that if he played for an American team... Bullshiiit!
OhCanada, I get what you're saying, but McGee's two goal dunks was more impressive, so the attempts could be easily forgiven. I wouldn't go as far as saying it's fixed, but Ibaka should have beaten out Griffin. McGee deserved it because he did things we haven't even seen before. He just used up his tricks too quickly.
it was obvously rigged, blake had no chance of losing.
I like Derozans 2nd dunk but i think it should have been Ibaka and Mcgee..
They need to mix it up, some how let all 4 guys do all their dunks, then combine a judges scores and fan votes at the end somehow. If they say you need to have four dunks, lets see them all and then decide.
Mcgee shoulda jumped over a truck.
unfortunately thats true.
I have to say that my favorite dunk of the night was a missed dunk... Blakes first attempt of the night really impressed me. My favorite made dunk would have to have been Demar's last one, and then in close 2nd, Ibakas free throw line dunk. I personally hated Mcgees dunks, who the hell cares if you can use both hands to dunk on hoops that are right next to each other with 20 tries. I am sure just after watching him do it all three of the others could have pulled it off given that many tries, and thats without practicing. It might have impressed me if he just did it no problem, but when it is just you and the basket(s) you have to pull it off quick, which might be why I liked the two made dunks above so much...
He was right the whole time. And one thing about Lebron is, he can sure in the hell smell when something is going to make him look bad. I think he knew It was a set for Griffin to win, and had he joined it, all it would of done is made him look like a stepping stone for Griffins career.
cabbycab: agreed
i agree.. ibakas such a good guy
I think McGee might be the only person in the world who can do the first two dunks that he did...... The presentation shoudn't matter that much becasue it's called the Dunk Contest, not a frickin hype contest like Kenny "Jumbo Jet" Smith turned it in to.........
I loved the McGee dunk (The two balls, two goals).. Its my favorite dunk contest dunk of all time, he's probably the only person in the world who can do that!!! Ibaka should have gotten a 50 on that freethrow dunk, he's the first person that has done it behind the freethrow line.. DeMars Second was nice.. i was dissapointed on his first, because on the nba.com video he cleared it in his first try. Blakes 360 was NICE. He should have jumped over the big part of the car, not the front. The hang on the rim off the backboard was nice as hell. McGees first dunk in the finals was nice... I loved the 3 balls, if only he finished it on the first.. Kenny Smith did a good job on hyping up the crowd (which is a very huge part in a dunk contest, dont hate) i loved it. It was the best dunk contest in years, one of the best of all-time, the dunk contest, is back!!! I wanted to see what DeMar and Serge had up their sleeve though, if they had gotten on the final round. They should have a dunkoff for 3rd place or something next year. Maybe 3 dunks a round with the two highest scores counting (like the 2000 dunk contest).Loved it!!!
i think this was rigged blake did not deserve to get in the finals. way to much hype around him. and with fan vote he cudda done layups instead of dunks and still win. ibaka got straight robed with his free throw line dunk. best free throw line dunk ever? i think so. demar had nasty dunks. mcgee brought a lot of creativity. blakes seccond dunk attempt was nasty, too bad he cudnt pull it off. blakes last dunk was pretty bad. but me nd my cousins said mcgee should have put his armpit in the rim for his first dunk in the finals and jumped over the car when the car is vertical to the hoop not horizontal...if he did tht is would be ova
but all in all the dunk contest is back(magic johnson voice)
yes, the fan voting was ridiculous. There was no way for Blake to lose. He had some nice dunks but in this contest it wasn't enough. Demar Derozan's dunks should have been enough to get to the finals, although going first in the contest may have hurt him. Serge Ibaka's FT line dunks was very impressive and should have earned a 50. The top 5 dunks in order, IMO:
1) Demar Derozan - Showstopper(Dunk 2, Round 1)
2) Javale Mcgee - 2 goals, 2 balls alley oop off glass(Dunk 1, Round 1)
3) Serge Ibaka - FT line dunk(Dunk 1, Round 1)
4) Demar Derozan - Eastbay funk dunk remix(Dunk 1, Round 1)
5) Blake Griffin - Off glass arm in rim(Dunk 1, Round 2)
In terms of total dunk contest competition, it was the best since 2000(Vince, Stevie Franchise and TMac). Most of the dunks were very good but I think the misses took away from the excitement. The FG% for the contest had to be close to 50%. lol.
trinajoe, the fans had no vote on the first round so you cant blame the fans for blake getting past demar, thats on the 5 judges who were there.
As for the contest as a whole, the first round was the best first round i have ever seen. Major props to all 4 competitors. They brought somehting unique. Seriosuly not one guy dissapointed. Demar was awesome. Ibaka actually didnt cross the ft line which is a first for the famous "ft line dunk". McGee might have been the most creative dunker in the history of the event. ANd blake was jumping out the builiding. However the final round fell flat. Blakes dunk was the easist dunk of the night where he jumped over the hood of the car and made a basic dunk. Then javele looked like he had no idea he would get that far and threw down a similar level of difficulty dunk but minus the presentation thus deserved to lose.
I know llperez, i meant it was over as soon as he advanced. He had more of a homecourt advantage than Jordan did in 88. I mean he would have won the contest last year with his dunks but this year was special and he didn't deserve it.
i dont think blake deserved to advance, but again that had nothing to do with the home crowd since 5 guys voted him into the finals. Once he was in the finals, i do believe he edged out mcgee since mcgee had one of the worst dunks of the contest on his last attempt where at least blake brought in the showmanship with the quire and car.
...
No Blake derserve it because the only person who could beat him tonight was McGee and when Blake jumped over the car I thought McGee was going to bring the other Net back out and dunk on a 13 feet. That would of been incredible one showstopping dunk after another in the finals and McGee would of probabley won.
But when McGee came back out on court for his final dunk you saw him look at Wall and McGee just looked defeated he didn't even know what he was gonna do. That's what I loved about him and Blake at 2 different times during the competition they literally just ran, jumped, and contorted their body which ever was the momentum took them for a dunk attempt instead of just trying to do the same dunk.
I wasn't a big fan of the foul line dunk by Ibaka his 2 dunk should of been a clean 50 it was so creative and he got so high it was crazy. I posted in the summer during the McGee vs Ibaka thread about how Ibaka's jumped and reached higher then the measuring pole when they tried to test his vert over in Africa dude is a freak athlete and probably only McGee, Ibaka, and Dwight Howard were the only 3 people in the whole building who could of pulled off the 2 back board dunk which might of been the greatest single dunk in the contest. Unlike Ibaka's foul line dunk that everyone of the contestants could of did and Sammy D did in game, and James White did it thru his legs. The foul line dunk as is should be banned from the contest it's not as hard to pull off for them as you think
And if Blake would of pulled off the first dunk of the night he tried I was gonna throw up. That was unreal.
in my opinion this year big men really showed really CAN dunk, Grifiin has some guards moves Ibaka's vertical is as good as Blake's and McGee is a freakish combination of length and athleticism, BUT the superman Mr.Dwight Howard is still the best big man dunker in the world in my eyes.
Ibaka's dunk from the free-throw line was impressive, but he lacked flair (his legs were stiff as hell) and barely got his finger tips on the rim when he dunked it.
And his bite the bear off of the rim dunk... He stole that from McGee... McGee had a similar dunk on the internet before the dunk contest... Ibaka just added more show to it.
Other than his last dunk, McGee was the most creative. DeRozan's "show stopper" was probably the best dunk of the night. I wish Griffin would've been able to pull off his first attempt when Baron threw it off of the side of the backboard... That would've been disgusting.
Overall... Great contest. Griffin didn't disappoint. He's more of a jump high/power dunker, but he came out and really showed the crowd that he put thought into his dunks and tried to be creative. I wish LeBron would do the same thing and stop worrying so much about his image.
Hey Indiana, I was looking at past threads and couldn't help but read one where you argued with me the entire time that the Cavs were going to be a .500 team. It's pretty funny man! :P
Williams/Sessions
Parker/Gibson
Moon/Grahm
Hickson/Jamison
Verajao/Hollins
Yea... I thought that team could finish somewhere around .500 under Byron Scott. I knew the fans would come out and support the team. I thought tough and gritty play would help them overachieve (similar to the Houston Rockets last year). I thought they'd be a solid team at home. And it looked like that when the season first started. Things changed though when LeBron came in... They weren't the same ever since that game.
And then injuries have just obliterated their season... Well at least the first half of it.
Ibaka jumped a far distance on the free-throw line dunk, but it was ugly. He looked like an airplane that didn't get elevation off of the ground, his legs had no flair and then his fingers barely touched the rim.
IF not for having insanely long arms, he doesn't complete that dunk. Nice, but I don't think a guaranteed 50. We've seen that dunk done better.
I didn't like the scoring in this contest, but all of the dunks/showmanship was fun to watch. IF I had to rank them, I'd go with:
1. McGee - IF not for Ibaka stealing his dunk, he'd have won the contest. He did two dunks we'd never seen before. And then the cradle was sick, even for someone his height. My only problem is he needed a lot of attempts.
2. DeRozan - He should've been in the final round. The "Show Stopper" was stupid sick. And his first dunk was very good as well. My only problem was him choosing Amir Johnson to do his toss... Jose Calderon???
3. Ibaka - I already wrote what I thought about his free-throw line dunk. And the second dunk... He stole it. Still... He had good showmanship and didn't disappoint.
4. Griffin - First dunk was stupid sick. Statue of Liberty full 360 with the behind the head cock back slam with power. His hops are stupid sick. He had to go to plan B on the second dunk, which shouldn't have gotten him into the Final round. He wasn't good enough. Modified VC dunk was nice. Over the car dunk had good showmanship, but he didn't jump over the right part of the car.
That's better than thinking he'd be the next Kenyon Martin like Scarecrow did lol.
And I was hoping Griffin pulled out the 720... I think he could do it.
My thoughts on this contest were:
- McGee's first two dunks were awesome. He deserved to be the top guy, but his last 2 were good/below average, and even with a real vote probably wouldnt have beaten Blake.
- Ibaka's first two dunks were both really good. As Indiana said, i think if he made the FT line dunk look cleaner he could have advanced
-DeRozan's dunks were nice. But Again. I dont see why everyone is so fascinated with them. To me, most years those would have been absolutely 2nd round qualifying dunks, but this year he deserved to be 4th, not even 3rd.
-Blake's first dunk was sick. I dont care if it was just a 360, he sold it, what Ibaka failed to do with his first dunk. Blake's 2nd dunk would have been ridiculous had he pulled off what he originally intended on doing, but the dunk he did was mediocre at best. The VC rewind was lame, and the car dunk was cool for the props and everything they set up, but it was only okay. Now i will say, had McGee did something awesome with dunk No.4, theres no way he would have won, and then I would be the first to tell you Blake didnt deserve it, but in this case, he did.
- Lets stop overhyping the guys throwing passes. Everyone is always wanting a Point Guard to throw passes to these guys. I remember a few years ago when they were freaking out JR Smith didnt have Chauncey Billups helping him out. A. Alot of these guys dont show up to all star weekend. B. Just because u average 8+ assists in an NBA game, does not mean you can throw bounce passes from half court or angled passes off the back of the rim. C. These guys go with there buddies, they dont go with the logical choice. In conclusion, it really doesnt matter.
