The rich just keep getting richer.

Duke today announced the signing of 6’7" SF Jack White.

White was a star player on the Australian National team that nearly beat USA at the FIBA World Championships. He is known for his high IQ, defense and 3pt shooting. He projects to have an immediate impact for the Blue Devils and is exactly the type of player the modern NBA covets.

At NBA level, he would play a similar role to Trevor Ariza and along with Thon Maker, Isaac Humphries, Deng Adel and Harry Froling, Dejan Vaseljevic, William McDowell White, we could see a 2017 NBA draft stacked with Aussie talent.

Haha. You Americans are all racist!

At least my guys are in College and have the chance to prove themselves.

      I can back it up…

Thon Maker – Legendary youth talent and now somehow underrated despite balling lately.

Isaac Humphries – Next Kentucky bigman to go in the lottery. Still HS age. Outplayed Diamond Stone despite being 2 years younger.

Dejan Vaseljevic – All FIBA first team despite being a lot younger that guys like Malik Newman.

Harry Froling – Outperformed DeAndre Ayton recently at Basketball w/o Borders camp to win MVP.

Jack White – You guys doubting coach K’s eye for talent?

Also, you’ll have noticed the #1 guy this year is a Skip too.

And NBA teams are loaded with Skips who play unselfish team ball yet dominate +/- (Mills, Bogut, Delly).

Well… excluding the guys who were highly recruited, didn’t live up to expectations, but were still decent on the D1 level (ala Scheyer, Paulus, etc.)… recently you’ve had Chase Jeter, Semi Ojeleye, Alex Murphy, Josh Hairston, Tyler Thornton, Andre Dawkins, Olek Czyz, Taylor King, Marty Pocius, Eric Boateng, Jamal Boykin, David McClure, Patrick Davidson, and Brian Zoubek, but that guy makes some killer cupcakes now though, so he’s not THAT much of a bust.

Don’t forget that Burgess kid.  Actually I think Duke’s recruiting success really improved when jeff Capel joined in 2011.  By all accounts he is the one that has pushed for recruiting one and done kids.  He supposedly had the relationships that got Okafor/Jones package, and Winslow.  I think Duke has become Kentucky 2.0 with him there.  I think Duke will need to seriously pay him or he will be head coaching somewhere in the next 3 years.

Take Tyler Thornton off of that list.  He was every bit the player K thought he was recruiting.  Calling him a bust is incorrect.  And the jury is still out on Jeter and Semi as they are still in college.  I can’t give you McClure or Davidson either.  Neither were very highly rated from Duke standards and both still had decent careers.

And "bust" is a harsh term for guys like Hairston and Boykin too since they had success, albeit Boykin’s wasn’t in a Duke uniform.

The point wasn’t to call them busts so much as it was to say that not everyone coach K recruits is an NBA talent.

I have no idea who this kid is, but this late signing kind of came out of nowhere, like the Vrankovic signing. I’d compare the signing itself moreso to that signing than say, the signing of a guy like Marty Pocius, who impressed everyone at the Hoops Summit but was also a highly regarded commodity before and after. Just like Vrankovic, he was hardly on any other blue-blood’s radar. He only held offers from Boise State, Albany, Mercer, and Loyola Marymount. Also like Vrankovic, this kid was only a three star recruit, except this kid actually shows up lower on the recruiting rankings (#221 composite, #46 small forward). This season, Vrankovic is averaging less than 3 mpg, despite the fact that Duke has the shallowest bench in the NCAA, especially in the frontcourt.

You guys are killing my man ‘Whitey’ by comparing him to all these busts.

But its no coincidence that Aussie hoops prospects have been signed to all the top programs.

              Maker (looking like Kansas)

              White (Duke)

              Vaseljevic (Miami)

              Simmons (could have picked anywhere)

              Humphries (Kentucky)

              Froling (SMU)

              Wilson (SMU)

I’ll admit I’m a major homer but the next generation is deep and talented. Basketball is a sport on the rise down under and thats just starting to show in NBA ranks (7active players) and in NCAA high-majors.

Seriously go check out highlights of the U17 FIBA gold medal game. The Aussies nearly beat the likes of Josh Jackson, Diamond Stone etc despite the average age being much younger.

These guys can really shoot as well!

Pocius doesn’t deserve to be in this list.

He was injured/mysteriously in Coach K dogs house his entire Duke career.

As soon as he decided to go pro he started playing at a much higher level and has been a key part of Lithuanias national team ever since which makes him spending so much time on the bench in Cameron even more confusing.

Coming from a fellow Australasian who has seen all of these kids live, it is ridiculous for you to think they will all, or even most, will be entering the 2017 draft. Maybe Thon Maker is one and done, most of the other will stay 2-4 years.

I’ve got a hype-first attitude (which coincides with a get-proven-wrong later attitude. Eg See Jonah Bolden)

I’m not even a real person, just the inner hype machine deep within your subconscious waiting to bust out!

Add standout Deng Gak  to the list. He just received an offer from Duke.

Underhypped, but just another example why smart programs are staying clear of the AAU scene and looking down under for talent that has been taught to play basketball the right way.

Thats not where he developed his game.

Hes been taught how to play at the Australian Centre of Excellence.

Same institution that brings u most of the Aussie NBA guys and probably the worlds best youth basketball development institution given recent history.

Even the top US High Schools couldnt match the number of kids going to high majors these last few years.

The system works. Coach K has already snagged 2 in this class.
