Honestly, I think it kills NBA teams who only have a few things to measure an International player by. They draft them on the basis of one or two great games. Here are a few examples

Enes Kanter – Nike Hoop Summit game, did not play a game in college and got drafted 3rd overall.

Bismack Biyombo – Got drafted based on a triple double in Nike Hoop Summit game.

Kevin Seraphin – I don’t even know why he got drafted 17th overall

I just don’t want the same thing to happen to Dennis Schroeder .. He is a very good player, but Its unfair to judge him based on a few performances whilst players in the USA get constantly evaluated daily

The teams to supposedly have scouts that travel and watch international players play, or at least watch game tape – I think teams don’t really draft players based off of one performance and if they do – they don’t have to.
Enes Kanter was more in a Ricardo Ledo situation, he didn’t even play internationally.

I think he is right. No way in hell are NBA teams seeing any of the foreign players play more than 2-3 games in general.

It is amazingly obvious by the simple fact that every draft NBA is taking some complete scrubs and awful players from Europe and at the same time is every single year completely ignoring almost all of the actual best players in Europe that are available to be drafted.

This happens over and over for many years now.

So yes, they are DEFINITELY drafting based of 2-3 games at draft camps.

If this is not true and they actually are scouting leagues and games in Europe like they claim (I never have believed this claim from NBA teams to be anything other than total BS)………..

then the scouts and managers of NBA teams are obviously all retarded, and I mean literally they are mentally retarded.

Bismack & Seraphin was known to fans by few games ,not to NBA teams and scouts ,NBA has judged them based on playing professionally in a leagues that is suppoed to be much stronger than college basketball ,I’ve actually wrote on Seraphin several times here b4 the draft and thought he would be a solid late first round pick(picked higher than I thought, still thinks he will have a decent career as back up big man)
There is also workouts ,interviews etc
I agree with Anton123 about Kanter
And if there is NBA teams who just draft players based on 2-3 games ,then that is their problem tbh
btw ,I think Kanter has proven he is gr8 pick (I thought he was gonna be a bust prior to the draft ) ,Seraphin isn’t that bad considering he is mid first round pick and the 2010 draft isn’t exactly that deep anyway ,Bismack is considered as bust by many, but the kid is younger than Oladipo for example who is still to play NBA game,so he still have some time to prove himself .every one knew he was a project who is years away from contributing

It’s always difficult to judge home grown talents playing in different systems. for different coaches, with different players in different conferences, all things that could affect their performance. These things become even harder to judge when looking at international prospects. I’d agree that drafting anyone off of a small sample size is foolish. In Bismak’s defence, he was averaging 5 pts, 3 rbs and 2 blks (off the top of my head) in a very good professional league in only about 17mins per game. He’s still young but you can’t help but to feel he’s not in an ideal situation.
The two international prospects who scare me the most in this draft are Schroeder and Livio Jean-Charles. The former hasn’t played at a particularly high level and may have some attitude concerns, the latter has literally done very little vs grown men and stood out against young uns in the Hoop Summit.

Bro, since the days of Kukoc, Petrovic and up to the drafting of Dirk, Manu and Parker, teams spend good money on international scouting looking for that next gem. I would bet that the success rate of a prospect over seas as compared to the US is probably pretty similar and considering the high volume of quality internationals, I think your assumptions of NBA scouting are probably pretty stupid

There are quite a few things that are being done the wrong way, as long as NBA’s european scouting is regarded. I am from Europe, and I tell you half of every year’s intl players are not worth of playing in the league, not even the teams’ attention. For example, from this years draft, Gobert is a game changer and can develop into a NBA player, Schroeder is pretty good, and Saric could play in the league for sure. For the rest of them, I really doubt it. I watch their games all the time. Abrines, for example, is not better than your average NCAA sg. But he plays overseas so the mystery surrounding him adds to his hype. Same thing happens with European teams and American players. Some of them are good and can really help, but in many cases players are signed and overpaid just because they’re from the states, when European guys that would be equally good are not given any consideration.

NBA scouts look for potential. The games are differents for obvious reasons (rules) so they try to find certain skills that could be useful in the league. For example, Schroeder seems have very good vision and plays at a really good pace, but if he didn’t have good defence, he wouldn’t have been looked at by scouts.

I doubt Abrines ever plays in the league. He already shows athleticism and good shooting, along with good intangibles… if he ever develops a killer instinct, he could be a solid SG in the NBA.
