Doing comparisons is fun, so here’s an exercise for all to participate in. Using nbadraft.nets comparisons, who will be the better pro? The known pro, or the draftee. Try not to complicate things…My picks are in brackets.

    • Wiggins vs Gay                 (Wiggins by far)
    • Embiid vs Olajuwon          (Dream…and not even close)
    • Parker vs Anthony            (Carmello, but a close one)
    • Vonleh vs Bosh                (Bosh easily)
    • Smart vs D-wade             (Flash easily)
    • Exum vs Penny                (Tie)
    • Randle vs Coleman         (Randle)
    • McDermott vs Szerbiak  (Tie)
    • Harris vs Mayo              (Harris)

Who ya got. Additional comparisons welcome.

I see Doug as a taller Jimmer, cept he doesn’t always have the ball. Anybody that goes to Sac basically has their career put to a halt for a while.

I agree with most of these. I wish this site would change the Embiid Olajuwon comparison. Just because their both African that doesn’t mean their games are anything alike. I’d put Penny over Exum. I think people forget how good he really was. Harris and Mayo would be a tie to me.

The fact they’re both African is probably a reason for some people to see the comparison, but just off the eye test, I think their games are very similar. Both are exceptionally nimble and athletic for their size, both can change a game with their defense, and both seem were fairly new to basketball when they were about 19 or 20.

Also take a look at comparing their freshman stats. It’s important to remember that big men tend to progress fairly slow.

      Olajuwon: 8.3 ppg, 6.2 rpg, 2.5 bpg, 60.7 FG%, 18.2 mpg
      Embiid: 11.2 ppg, 8.1 rpg, 2.6 bpg, 62.6 FG%, 23.1 mpg

Now I’m not saying Embiid will be better than Olajuwon, but there is definitely more to the comparison than their continent of origin.

Embiid looks more like Ralph Sampson.  Not as tall but maybe just as long.  Can also run the floor, dunk, shoot a bit from the outside, and block some shots.

    • Wiggins vs Gay (Wiggins by far)
    • Embiid vs Olajuwon (More of a Ralph Sampson – I buy this stat sheed of 20/11/3 still makes Hakeem better but a 1 and 2 punch, not 1a and 1b punch)
    • Parker vs Anthony (I go bold with parker here. Parkers defense is his biggest weakness many people think. Look at how Melo has come without the interest of really playing defense. Jabari will be very fine. I could see Graant Hill type of numbers as the absolute ceiling for him wich is better then what Melo has to offer)
    • Vonleh vs Bosh (This may be though one. I give Bosh the upper hand but I could see Vonleh beeing more effective down the road if he falls and stays in the right enviroment. If Bosh would be still in Toronto he would still be the man there putting up numbers)
    • Smart vs D-wade (Flash gets that easily)
    • Exum vs Penny (Talent maybe Exum but Pennies short peak was really BIG and tough to match – In the long run Exum, he could play way more years as Penny who lost a trillion games and retired early)
    • Randle vs Coleman (Coleman was a monster and I don’t think Randle will handle his competition as good as Coleman)
    • McDermott vs Szerbiak (Wally – I somehow don’t believe in McDermott. I can’t say why and without a reason I could name. I just don’t buy him so I give the nod to Wally World)
    • Harris vs Mayo (can’t decide here – I say even)

9 couples = 3 wins for the 2014 class (Wiggins, Parker, Exum) vs 5 wins for the oldies and active (Hakeem, Bosh, Wade, Coleman, Szerbiak) + the even one at the end.

    • Wiggins vs Gay (Wiggins easily, I hate this comparison though.  Wiggins is more like Paul George in my opinion.)
    • Embiid vs Olajuwon (Hakeem but Embiid could be the best center in the league at some point)
    • Parker vs Anthony (Carmelo will have better stats but Parker may have more wins)
    • Vonleh vs Bosh (Bosh)
    • Smart vs D-wade (D-Wade but I don’t understand this comparison.  I compare Smart to Deron Williams)
    • James Young vs Afflalo (Afflalo by far because of defense/intangibles but Young may put up better scoring numbers)
    • Randle vs Coleman (Randle)
    • TJ Warren vs Caron Butler (tie unless Warren becomes a good 3 point shooter)
    • Aaron Gordon vs Kenneth Faried (Gordon)

Wiggins vs Gay – Wiggins.  Gay is very weak mentally.  Paul George is more skilled, but less athletic than Wiggins.  Once Wiggins builds confidence in the NBA, the only man that will athletically be up there with him is Lebron James.

Embiid vs Olajuwon – Of course Hakeem but this is unfair.  Wiggins is being compared to Gay, why not Lebron?  Embiid potentially is the second coming of Olajuwon, he has flashes of Olajuwon.  Compare him to Mutombo and then its Embiid all the way!!

Parker vs Anthony – PARKER.  Anthony is a ball-hog, black hole, momentum-killer, his points are expected and don’t uplift a team at all, because he’s selfish.  Parker will be able to play within a system.  Parker is a great teammate, Anthony is all about himself.  I don’t think Parker will settle for the undeserved fame.

Vonleh vs Bosh – Bosh is a more athletic Vonleh but Vonleh is longer and maybe better defensively.  But Bosh, simply because he’s more athletic.

Smart vs. D-Wade – Please….D-Wade.  Smart should be compared to Steve Francis with less hops, or John Wall with less speed.

McD vs Sczerbiak – McD.  He’s a better passer, better at playing within a system…not about himself like Wally was, trying to make a name for himself in the NBA.  McD will play that Spurs type ball.  But McD may be a better Mike Dunleavy Jr.

Randle vs. Coleman – a wash.  I don’t think either player is a great NBA player.

Exum vs. Penny – Exum.  Penny got derailed due to injury.  Exum I think is more athletic.  But there’s a 4 inch heihg difference there, lol.  Exum vs. D-Rose is a better comparison.

Harris vs Mayo – who cares……neither guy is anything special, nothing more than a 6th man on a winning team, or a third option on a bad team.

Gordon vs Faried – thats a wash.  Faried may even be the better offensive player, but Gordon is the better defensive player.
