james1337ParticipantHey I was wondering if the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd picks of the second round are worth more than the 28th, 29th, 30th picks of the first round. I don’t understand how guarenteed contracts work, and I have an idea that having an extra day to pick the person is much needed. If anyone wants to clarify for me, that would be great thanks. I understand how many teams will trade to get decent picks in the second round though I’m not 100% sure why. Don’t get me wrong, I’m sure some scouts hit a few grandslams and they feel some players will be overlooked for that long.
Thanks!

BloodyCrumpetParticipantBoth rounds are done on the same day, but to answer your question: they are worth about the same.
1st round picks get two years guaranteed with team options for the third and fourth years and a qualified offer opportunity in the fifth year (meaning he becomes a restricted free-agent as opposed to an unrestricted free agent.
2nd round picks don’t have to be signed at all. If they do, they’ll get signed for pretty cheap for a year or two with a few team options at the end.
Since second round picks give their teams more flexibility, there is an advantage of picking 31st overall as opposed to 30th overall. However, second round picks usually become free agents faster and you risk losing them.
So yeah, worth about the same.

natedogggParticipantthe only difference is guarenteed money.
First round picks fall into the rookie scale with options on the 3rd and 4th year.
Second rounders are non guarenteed so they can be cut a lot easier.
low risk moves.
