B-ball fanParticipantThey are very different style players, though, or at least they were in college. They have some superficial similarities, but McDermott spent much more time on the low block in college, while Babbitt did a lot more work facing up from the elbow. Babbitt was a better ball-handler at a younger age and was much better shooting off-the-dribble, but McDermott is a much more reliable catch-and-shoot player and is as more skilled post player.

Robb_CParticipantIts kinda difficult to put NBA comparison on white players… just for the shear fact that there is very few players to compare them too as far as position (not many successful white SF in the league right now)..

GrandmamaParticipantI agree Gordon will go before McDermott. But Gordon may be the riskiest lottery pick among the top 14, while McDermott seems like a much safer pick. Aaron Gordon could easily become Jan Vesely 2.0 while McDermott at the very least will be an elite 3-pt gunner off the bench. Gordon’s ceiling is much higher, but his floor is also much lower.

ropeParticipantI see Gordon in the Shawn Marion / Kwahi Leonard mold. Given his three point percentage, he ought to bring his FT % up. I think the guy can play and will had a pretty good career as a guy that fills a lot of gaps.

Memphis MadnessParticipantWhat about this one? Big name college guy, polished skill set, a big “3” who can also play some stretch four. Can score from anywhere, great shooter with 3 point range (and beyond). Not known for great wingspans or athleticism, but are solid athletes. Solid rebounding. Guys who can take the last shot. A guy you feel like you can run some offense through. Timeless old man game. What about Paul Pierce?

KHAM83ParticipantThen let’s not compare him bc he’s white. I want yo say he’s like a poor man Antawn Jamison. Not over athletic or strong, but finds a way to score. He’s a better shooter of course. McDermott is a player that can be a great role player in the perfect system.

dustyzaParticipantTo build off of what Robb_C said earlier, I’m not comparing them because they are white, but the success of white SF’s in the NBA SHOULD be taken into consideration.
Also if you look at Babbitt’s scouting report to me (and this is just to me) it is eerily similar to McDermott’s

Magic JordanParticipantThis is so ridiculous, how should previous success of white SF’s be taken into consideration as if they are all created equal? If this was going the other way everybody would be blasting it as racist.
It’s like saying… well Ron Artest jumped into the stands to beat up a fan so that should be taken into consideration when assessing all black players attitudes.

dustyzaParticipantWho said they were all created equal?
Lets look at a few white SF’s : Adam Morrison, Steve Novak, Joe Alexander, Maarty Leunen, Chase Budinger, Gordon Hayward, Luke Babbitt, Chandler Parsons, Kyle Singler, and Robbie Hummel
Each player listed plays the game a different way. I guess it depends on what the expectations are for McDermott.

Magic JordanParticipantWell saying each player plays different is kind of contradicting to what you said about success of other white players should be taken into account don’t you think? If they all play different why does it need to be taken into account? And I agree with you they do all play different, so its pointless to lump them into a category of white SF when the only thing similar about them is their whiteyness.

dustyzaParticipantOk I understand what you’re saying. Let me ask you this, what does the majority of the other SF’s have that McDermott doesn’t?

Magic JordanParticipantBudinger is the only Elite athlete of the group. Hayward is above average athlete. Doug is as good of an athlete as the rest of the guys. To sum it up I predict Doug is the best player out of that bunch, barring maybe Parsons who I think he will compare most favorably to in the league. Almost identical combine results. Waaaay better shooter. Elite shooter. Babbit, Morrison, Leunan(did he even play in the league?) and the other guys don’t really belong in the convo with Hayward, Parsons and McDermott.
And don’t get me wrong, I’m not calling you a racist or anything. I personally think the best comp for him is Paul Peirce. I think trying to limit him to a white comparison is selling him short is all that I was getting at.

dustyzaParticipantThe reason I put the others in the conversation (Babbitt, Morrison, Leunan) was because they were other SF’s drafted in the past years. My reasoning behind all of this is Elite SF’s in the league are very different than the players I listed, McDermott doesn’t fit as an elite SF.
I never thought you did, I’m white for the record lol. Just an observation I made, you do bring up a good argument.
