The exhibition game against a nobody opponent is a time-honored college basketball tradition. You steamroll a much worse team, get a little tune-up before the season starts, entertain the fans, and move on. Unless …

Yes, Memphis — a team that sits just below the Top 25 in preseason rankings — lost in overtime to a local Division II school called Christian Brothers University.

CBU actually led for much of the game, then fell behind, then came back to send it to OT and eventually win. The Tigers have stomped CBU several years in a row, so the Bucs and their fans were pretty thrilled to get revenge. As for Memphis? Maybe this will be a down year, but it’s just a preseason loss. These things happen. Syracuse know what’s up.

(Also, if you’re wondering who gives up chicken for breaking 70 points, here you go.)

Don´t get me wrong because I´m not an american, but do Div. II and III actually have fans outside players’ families/friends?

Usually D II and III fandom comes from local communities.

What´s the average attendance in these games? Is it easy to find info about?

I´ll go to US next march basically to watch some games and it would be cool to watch one of those

Me too…..but keep in mind Boeheim experimented with man to man D (as well as the lineup) for the majority of that game.  More proof why the Cuse stays in the 2-3 zone. Nonetheless, they should have never lost to Lemoyne (but on a positive note…. it didn’t count as a loss on their overall record).

good god!! i’ve followed memphis basketball since i was a kid..this year’s backcourt has to be the worst in team’s history..if their inaffectiveness continues it’ll put extra pressure on their 2 nba prospects austin & goodwin…… the guards were constantly beaten on the defensive end…pastner talked a few weeks ago about the lack of consistent outside shooting, after last night’s performance he still have reason for concern… ..

memphis have 9 newcomers on their roster and it showed last night….becuz most of the players seemed scared, they acted like they werent use to playing together and not sure of what to do when they did get the ball in their hands…only kendren johnson the vandy transfer have d-1 experience…he is expected to bring some stability to the team..but last night he was awful…he looked slow, had 6 turnovers and threw away the ball late in the game that gave cbu the chance to take the final shot in regulation…

austin nichols and shaq goodwin played well..nichols hit a couple of mid range jumpers..that was 1 of the main knock on his game..sophomore nick king was the only other bright spot….

I didn’t watch the game.  Didn’t even really think about going to it, since it was so cold.

Then I heard someone on Facebook mention the game.

Not sure which is worse: losing to a D2 team, OR NOT CARING that we lost to a D2 team.

APATHY will kill the "Tiger Basketball Franchise" before anything else will.

Looks like we will also lose out on Skal too.

The Grizzlies are the team in town now.

This might be how DePaul felt after MJ showed up in Chi Town.

If fans CARE, it’s ok even if they are MAD like after the ’08 title game and when Coach Cal packed up his program and moved it to Kentucky.

If fan’s DON’T CARE, then that means that the clock is ticking.

Although it is somewhat shocking when a major program loses to a DII team on their exhibition schedule, it is still really early and most teams are experimenting with lineups and getting a feel of how everone plays (especially for younger teams).  In most cases I would say people tend to overreact when something like this happens, but Memphis also lost 2 exhibition games this past summer to Carleton University in Canada.  Don’t get me wrong Carleton is one of the better Canadian teams and losing to them shouldn’t be that embarrassing….but one of the games they crushed Memphis by 32 points.
