If derrick rose wins MVP, does he automatically become the best PG in the NBA?

It’s a tough question, because Paul is still the best PG in my opinion these days, even though Rose is MVP. This is the way I think about it; Rose is the best player playing the PG position, but Paul is best at playing the position.

Going by history the answer to that is no. The MVP is given to the player judged to be the most valuable to his team not neccesarily the best player.

Throughout history there are many instances where the MVP was won by somebody other the player widely considered to be the "best" at his position. When Dirk Nowitzki won MVP he wasn’t considered a better PF than Tim Duncan or Kevin Garnett. Likewise when Dave Cowen won MVP most people still considered Kareem the best. When Wes Unseld won MVP Wilt was still the better center as well.

That being said Derrick Rose is fast becoming the best PG in the league regardless of whether or not he wins MVP.

This is especially difficult because Rose is so much different than the prototypical point guard. He plays completely different than guys like Paul, Nash, Rondo and guys who are for the most part pass-first point guards. Rose is without a doubt the best score-first point guard in the league. And like ItsDwightHoward said, its hard to say that the MVP is the best player in the league, or even the best player at their position. Think about Steve Nash the two years he won it. Yes, you could definitely make the argument that he was the best point guard in the league, but most people would at that time would’ve easily said Kobe or LeBron, among others were the best player in the league. But it just depends on how much you mean to your team.
