I like Wiggins a lot, and he really impressed me last year. I’ve said in the past that he could be a VC level player, but watching this highlight of Vince dropping 51 points, I might have to take that back.

VC just looks so smooth compared to wiggins. Better ballhandler and a better shooter. Wiggins finished really well at the rim this year and his jumper will come around, but do any of you actually see him being able to do things like this:

They’re different players, I would like to say Wiggins could be more like a less stronger more vertical Carmelo offensively. Don’t see him as good of a scorer like melo but thinking maybe 25-27 at his peak could happen. Wiggins will be one of the leagues most elite defenders tho

Josh Jackson reminds me of Vince tho.

Josh Jackson is NOTHING like Carter. Jackson is a bigger Corey Brewer with a better handle.

Vince Carter was a better shooter and was also a better athlete. Wiggins has more length which gives him more potential as a defensive player, but I dont think he will be a better scorer than Carter was. Vince had it all offensively, even a post up game in his prime. Wiggins still has many holes in his game (jumpshot, ballhandling, and creating better shots for himself and his teammates).

I see Wiggins as a combination of Rudy Gay/Andre Iguadala.

I think Wiggins lacks iggy’s passing ability.

I think Wiggins is like a Rudy Gay/Luol Deng sort of player.

I don’t think you can compare him to VC as they are totally different.

I truly beleive Andrew has the potential to be the best perimeter defender in the league.

On offense his potential far from that of his defense  but as a rookie he already has some go to moves (Quick spin in the lane to a drive or close range jumper).

I hate comparing players as everybody plays different so I won’t give one.

As Andrew gets stronger and shot becomes more consistent I do feel he will become a star like Vince but more so for his defense then scoring.

Do I think Wiggins has the same potential VC had? No. VC had the physical tools and skills to be the GOAT IMO, he just never had the drive and will to be the best.

However, I do think Wiggins can be as good as Vince Carter actually was and probably surpass it.

Not even close. Carter was the definition of "physical specimen". He was built like diet Barkley, had freakishly long arms and big hands, and had Nate Robinson hops at 6’5". His ability to finish over the top of the defense is probably the best in league history. He had a lightning quick first step and a ridiculous handle. There’s never been ANYONE who can explode in traffic like he could in his prime. He had very few weaknesses on the offensive end and was a damn good defender when he focused. He was also a really underrated passer. You’d see Carter grab an offensive rebound or catch an entry pass into the post and go up from a standstill and crush it through 2-3 defenders. You don’t see many centers do that, let alone 2-guards. Carter and Wiggins’ games are nothing alike. Once he fills out and hits his stride I see Wiggins ceiling as Turbo Mike Finley.

I don’t think there’s a huge separation in speed and leaping. But Carter absolutely blows him away in strength and confidence. Carter was unafraid. Wiggins is reticent. I’m not sure you can teach that difference.

I agree with omphalos.  I think the two most naturally gifted basketball players that we have ever seen are T-Mac and Vinsanity.  Vince was so physically gifted he never had to really work hard to be great.  He didn’t have the ultimate drive like MJ and Kobe.  If Vince had the drive, work ethic and competitiveness that MJ and Kobe had, he would probably be a top 5 player of all time and perhaps have multiple rings.  The game just came so easy to him.  His natural gifts on the basketball court were stunning, 6’6′, cat quick, run like a deer, jump out of the gym, smooth handle, smooth jump shot, it was awe-inspiring to watch.  Wiggins is not the athlete not a young Vince was in my opinion.  I’m not saying Wiggins doesn’t have world class athleticism, but a 2000 Vince Carter was maybe one of the top athletes in the world at any sport.  The display he put on at the slam dunk competition that year was insane.  He also jumped over a 7 foot goofy French guy at the 2000 Sydney Olympics.  I think Wiggins will utimately turn out to be a better OVERALL player than Vince because he has a better drive and work ethic and his game will utimately round out because of that.  In terms of sheer athleticism and talent, I don’t think he will be as good as prime Vinsanity.

I don’t think Wiggins has the killer instinct necessary to be a game-changing player like Vince Carter.  I would never compare the two.  Maybe it’s the Canadian in him, but he comes off os soft somehow.  VC would eat him for lunch.  VC was more skilled, and tougher, and had a much better feel for the game.

Caveat:  I understand that AW has only played one season so we will see how he develops.  But personality usually doesn’t change like skill level does.  Vince had that swagger, Wiggins definitely does not.

It’s hard to tell at this point but I would say he has the potential to be just as good if not better than carter. Vince was more NBA ready when he entered the league but he also had the benefit of three seasons of college, whereas Wiggins only played one. He is probably closer to mcgrady than Vince in terms of pure athletic ability and explosiveness, but that is still very impressive. He is taller and longer than Vince, and has more potential to be an elite level defender, but is definitely not as strong. Vince was built like a tank, and combined with his incredible explosiveness that made him almost unstoppable when he got momentum going to the basket. Wiggins is more wiry strong, similar to t-mac.

We are still watching Wiggins in the infancy stage of his development as an NBA player so I would hold off on making any real bold predictions about his ceiling or potential for a few seasons. Carter wasn’t a great outside shooter or playmaker his rookie season either. He really developed those skills as his career progressed. I think in about 2 years we’ll really have a much better idea the type of NBA player Wiggins will be.
