Just noticed that Dirk’s new contract is for $50 million over 2 years – a flat $25 million each year but year 2 is a team option. The contract is bigger than first reported and the team option for 2017-18 is interesting.

I was wondering whether Dirk is possibly only intending to play next season and has perhaps agreed to give Dallas a trading chip for 2017-18. Any team looking for cap space a $25 million team option is a lovely piece to get and Dirk only needs to say he is retiring and receiving team waive him so he has still finished his playing career at Dallas.

I also read that of the second year’s $25mil, $5mil is guaranteed. The way they put it was "retirement insurance". I honestly don’t think Dallas would ever trade Dirk, unless it was something he wanted or requested. I believe they will bring him back next year unless he retires. Then he gets a nice $5mil golden handshake for all his years of loyal service.

Mark Cuban has treated Dirk like royalty since he has been with the Mavs.  He has made Dirk a very rich man and Dirk has made Mark Cuban a happy man with his title in 2006.  His contract is obviously for what he has done for the Mavs over what he will do for them for the next two years obviously.  Dirk is an all-time great and a shoe in for the hall of fame and I’m glad that he will retire a Mav.

Dirk brings them 1 championship and get rewarded with $25mill.

Wade bring the Heat 3 championships and only gets offered $20 mill…..

Cuban is paying Dirk because the Mavs won’t be competing for a chip this season, and Dirk took a ridiculous pay cut last time to help the team. Way more than Wade took.

I don’t argue with Dirk’s salary for next season, he took less money in 2010 and on his last deal. I was just wondering if the team option is almost a sacrifice for the team, he has the $5 million buy out so would be in a win-win situation.

If he did say he was retiring next summer and played effectively a farewell tour, would there be anything stopping the Mavs trading his team option come draft time next summer to get a player back. The receiving team has to pay Dirk his $5 million but they save a load of cap space or Dirk’s deal is used to balance out a trade where the Mavs send assets as well.

He deserves it but Wade got hosed. Riley will feel how bad it is when Chris Bosh is sidelined and Whiteside is pedestrian because there is no perimeter stars to open it up for him.

I agree that D-Wade was badly treated my Miami, he opted out in 2014 and gave up over $6 million across the next two seasons and only to be offered 1 year deals as a 32/33 year old when much older guys were getting longer term deals around the league.

It will be interesting to see if there is any backlash in Miami, they lost LBJ in 2014 and now D-Wade who was almost considered a Miami lifer.

Chicago vs Miami next season will be fun, Wade will be pumped for the games in Chicago like crazy and returning to Miami he’ll likely get a crazy reception and it may be an emotional night.

Good lord people get over the Wade thing. My gawd do people seriously think he’s worth 25 million dollars for the next two years?

He’s a shell of himself and just because other teams are stupid and overpay guys for legacy purposes doesn’t mean Wade got "hosed"

He took less money so that the team could win championships and they did. If we are going to celebrate players taking less money, it should be because they are actually sacrificing money, not doing something with the expectation of getting all that money back when they aren’t worth it. That’s as ass backwards a concept as I can think of.

Wade is still an all-star and based on what got paid out in summer well worth 25 mill per. The difference in their talks was 5 mil a year, they hard balled him over 5 mill a year then turned around and gave Tyler Johnson 13 mill a year. Does that make sense to you? Do you not think future players will remember how they didn’t take care of the best player in franchise history who brought them 3 rings? Cuban made a statement by giving dirk the 25 mill Riley wouldn’t give wade And wade is currently better then dirk.

Interesting points as always Biggy. Players wanting to compete but still wanting mega contracts is always a slight contradiction. If players want top running mates and a good supporting cast/bench sometimes they have to forgo some money to allow the team to get the right players in.

Its’ a smart move by Mark Cuban.  He gives Dirk a rich final contract a la Kobe Bryant because Dirk means as much to the Mavs as Kobe means to the Lakers.  First of all, Dirk puts fans in the seats.  He is a fan favorite and is practically a Dallas legend.  To allow him to finish his career somewhere else would seriously piss off the Mavs fan base.  Paying Dirk 25 mill is nothing to Cuban, and it’s worth it to keep the fan base happy.  Secondly, it shows other players that Mark Cuban is a good owner who takes care of his players.  In other words, if Cuban has pulled a Riley and let Nowitzki go somewhere else over a few million dollars, he would have showed how ruthless he is to the rest of the league.  Other big name players might be turned off of playing for Cuban, and Dallas isn’t exactly Los Angeles, Miami, or New York.  It’s not a bad city, but it’s not like players are dieing to move there.  Finally Mark Cuban loves his players, and he especially loves Dirk.  25 milion for one year is really not that much given the new cap, and for everything Dirk has done for that franchise.

Dallas has long been an organization well known for taking really good care of its players. How’s that been working out for them though?

They’ve struck out on the big game hunting every offseason and had to patch a roster together with guys like Matthews, Barnes, Barea and Williams.

I get the idea behind treating a guy the right way and maybe Miami was a tad cutthroat in their dealings with Wade. But to say Wade got screwed is beyond stupid because he took less money to that the team could build around him. I just don’t understand why he would feel entitled to that money coming back to him after that.

Sure Miami might regret letting him go, especially when they went right back around and gave Tyler Johnson big money, but in a vaccum, I don’t think they handled the Wade situation all that poorly. And the Dirk situation is its own entity.

Wade did get screwed over and Dallas would be in a better place but Mark Cuban kept switching out players.  You need a level of consistency ala Spurs.  Cuban does treat some of his players well but he also jettisons others and that has been costly.  Miami will have to overpay to get players now and you will slowly see them become a middle of the pack team in the East which is not a fun place to be.  There is a lot of talent available but superstars will start to avoid Miami like the plague.  This will really help Orlando though.

No superstars will avoid Miami until they find their next superstar (ala Wade)

You think Bosh was going there because he liked the way Pat Riley treated him? You think LeBron was going to Miami because Pat Riley kissed his butt better than any other GM? No. Players go where other stars are first, and market second. Miami has the market edge on maybe 25 teams. If they don’t have a star player in house, it won’t matter.

Miami will always be a draw due to the state tax laws, players want to keep as much salary as they can plus nice weather also helps.

I’d say Dallas is a fairly attractive location to play in and is seen as one of the bigger franchises in the NBA. I just feel they really need to land that one top level FA as would Mark Cuban want to allow the team to rebuild via the draft.
