Dirk could at any time now pass Shaq’s career points total of 28,596 and move into 6th place on the all time scoring list. It’s strange to think that Dirk will have been more prolific than Shaq ableit having played 85 odd games more.

That’s a remarkable accomplishment. I didn’t realize he was that high up on the list and it makes me appreciate him that much more. He has had a hell of a career and it’s not over yet; may be in the hunt for a 50-40-90 season.I remember watching him in the early 2000’s with guys like Steve Nash and Michael Finley and it’s crazy to think he has gotten to this point.

My favorite basketball moment/series (outside of ones involving the team I root for) is definitely the Mavs win over Miami in the 2011 Finals. Everyone on that team knew and filled their role perfectly, including Dirk, their lone star. One of the all-time great playoff performances and it really cemented Dirk’s legacy.

For NBA power forwards, maybe Dirk is better than Barkley and Baylor and, with the championship, Karl Malone even if Malone scored more.

Kareem, Karl, Bryant, Jordan, Wilt, Dirk.  NBA career points.

Dirk is at 16th spot for most career 3s.

    35th for career rebounds.

Dirk is amazing… one of the best offensive basketball players ever, but he still gets dinged for generally average defense.

Very good point by Exum about Dirk being so high on 3 point shooting list, that’s remarkable for a 7 footer.

Dirk could easily play for another couple of years if he wanted and Coach Carlisle would watch his minutes, 30,000 career points would be a realistic target for him.

Amazing to think that Kareem is still nearly 10,000 points ahead of Dirk. To put that into context take current MVP Steph Curry’s 6 year plus career total, add it to Dirk’s and it’s only about the same as what Kareem did,

Very Happy for him ,he is my all-time favorite player and the reason I am a Mavs fan
Probably he is the last player he will pass in the scoring list (though he could move up in the NBA/ABA list )
But the realistic target will be 30K landmark .If he keep healthy and play near to same level he is on now he will do it next year .
After his contract is over he will have achieved most of what he could ,probably will only play if he wanted to complete 20 years in the league

Not only is Dirk 6th all time scoring but he’s 1st among non-american players, the next being Hakeem the Dream at 10th.

Growing up I always admired Dirk since I come from Europe as well, but I honestly never thought he would end up as good as he is. His rookie year was decent but nothing spectacular, he shot 20% from 3pt and only 40% overall which for a big man in the 90s was really low (back when there were a lot of bruisers instead of face-up bigs like we have today). Not to mention he only averaged 0.6 blocks and 3.6 rebounds, also poor for a big, even a rookie playing just over 20 minutes per game.

But he erupted his sophomore year; upping his FG% to 46% and his 3pt to 38%, doubled his points and rebounds in just 15 more minutes per game. Only continuing to improve from there.

He’s also been very healthy, playing 14 seasons above 70 games and only 2 seasons under 70 (not counting his rookie year). For a 7 ft. guy that’s incredible durability.

He may be 37 but his skill and durability make me believe he can easily last until 40. He still has not slown down, even Duncan is starting to show some age, but Dirk is not. Dirk is roughly 3000 points away from Wilt, and 4000 away from Jordan & Kobe. It’s very possible he could pass them before he retires and sit at #3 all time.

My best wishes go out to Dirk, I hope you stay healthy and on top of your game, and I hope we get to see you for a few more years before you decide to give it up. It’s rare for a player to spend their whole career on one team, loyalty is something many players don’t seem to care about anymore. Much respect.
