Really nice workout with Dion Waiters showcasing ability to shoot the lights out.

Impressive I didn’t know he can shoot that good.

Its cuz everybody on here acts like he can’t without probably even watching him play much last year. He shot the ball very well for Syracuse all season but I will agree those workouts were at a whole different level. He is such a hard worker and his unorthodox form gives him an elevated ability to get shots off. Wow.

As somebody that goes to Syracuse and was at every home game and watched every away game, Waiters is not a guy you want to draft if you need shooting lol.  His abilities as a penetrator are top-notch (though he isn’t really a willing passer yet).  But shooting wise, he has a very slow release and just doesn’t have a good shooter’s touch (though he has displayed good range on his inconsistent shot).

It was extremely frustrating watching him play this year, because he started off the season so great, but once Fab got suspended the first time, he turned into a chucker that couldn’t actually make shots until the Big East tournament.  He was shooting somewhere around 50-55% before Fab’s suspension if I recall correctly, and from the suspension to the beginning of the Big East tournament, he shot around 35% during that stretch.  Meanwhile, he got caught out of position defensively a ton and completely ignored wide open teammates to force bad shots.

Waiters has a LOT of potential, and he should be able to step in and get into the lane pretty well right away, but he has a lot of weaknesses in his game right now and I honestly don’t think he’ll ever be a great starter in the NBA.

Obviously he is not a spot up shooter but to say that he was not a deadly mid range shooter and an above average 3 point shooter this year is flat out wrong. Yeah he had a cold stretch but overall but overall he shot 49% from the field 36% from 3 point range and 80% from the line, which are all above average numbers. Keep in mind that John Wall shot 7% from 3 point range this season. 7. While his shot is unorthodox the way he leans back and the height he releases it from made him almost impossible to block this year. On top of this he ended the year 13-22 from 3. I as well watched every Syracuse game and I don’t think any actual evidence from the season supports your statements other than maybe a 5 game stretch where he played poorly. On top of this he led the nation in steals/40 minutes, was our best passer off penetration besides scoop, and according to John Hollinger was the most efficient guard in all of college basketball. I respect your opinion, however I, along with the evidence, and especially this video, disagree pretty strongly.

This "cold stretch" lasted for over half the season…  He was great before Fab’s first suspension and then was cold the rest of the year until the Big East tournament.

And yes, comparing Waiters’ shooting numbers to the guy that might have been the worst shooter in the league at the guard position makes Waiters look like a great shooter.

He’s a passable shooter, but there’s no way that you could have watched all of his games and come away thinking he’s "deadly" as a shooter.

And yes, he racked up steals, but that doesn’t mean that he played good defense.  He and Scoop were both god awful in their defensive rotations.

I’ve said it all along, and people are going to remember this quote, "Waiters will be the next James Harden"

If he goes to Phoenix i think he will have a great shot at rookie of the year.

This kid’s jumper is WET by any definition. He has a really consistent, high release and he can make it with a hand in his face. Degree of difficulty doesn’t seem to affect him at all. Combine that with his ability to slash and I honestly believe Waiters will be a streaky, but potent scorer at the next level. Some players just have a knack for scoring the basketball. The real issue is if he’ll be able to defend NBA caliber SGs at his height.

Best SG in this draft. Because he can get to the hoop, convert at the rim, draw and convert fouls at minimum he will be a decent back up in the league. He’s undersized but strong and athletic enough to make up for that. If he improves as a distributor, gets a bit more consistent from outside and improves his overall D (all things which can be worked on) then I feel he’s got the potential to be a James Harden lite as well like TaylorCondrin suggests.

Even better than Beal? It’s difficult to say because Beal hasn’t shown he can create in the halfcourt like Waiters. Waiters’ only issue is his height and maybe shot selection.

My worry with Beal is his ability to create in the half court like you said. I feel like Waiters’ game could translate better to the NBA, although in the right system I feel Beal could be equally as effective eventually. It depends what you need although Waiters isn’t terrible from the perimeter and Beal isn’t as lights out as some have suggested. I would personally go Waiters cos I feel he can impact the game in so many ways with the ball and without it, where as I see Beal as being more of a guy who primarily plays off it and may require a systemic fit to be at his best.

I’m sure Waiters will be a fairly productive pro depending on his situation, so I’m not saying this to bash Waiters, but it’s getting really annoying how people react to videos of workouts, "Ooh! Aaah! I didn’t know he could shoot like that!"

Guess what, every NBA guard can make 8-10 threes in a row in an empty gym with no defender. It’s their job. They shoot thousands of shots. Every single prospect looks good in the videos of his workouts.

You don’t find out how good of a shooter they are until there’s someone who has to stop him from scoring to keep his job, and even then, you have to look at percentages, not just watch them on a video with a rebounder. I personally regularly make 40 out of 50 threes in an empty gym alone, and I’m just some 5-10 dude who works in an office, was a pretty good high school player but didn’t come anywhere near actually playing college basketball. It’s not that hard when nobody’s trying to stop you.

Plus, they edit out the misses on every video. So settle down, already!

You dont make 40 out of 50 NBA threes and plenty of NBA guards couldn’t do what Dion did in that video get outta here. That is why he isn’t going to slip past 7th in the draft. Machu just go to bed and stop giving Cuse fans a bad name with your ignorance.

At the end of the day, you won’t see a workout video for these guys where they’re missing all their shots.  Waiters is going through the motions on those jumpshots.  There isn’t any defense and he’s taking his time and trying to get his form down.

Like I said, he’ll be a passable shooter in the NBA; meaning that his shot will be good enough that teams can’t defend him the way they do with Rondo, but he’ll make his mark at the next level with his penetration skills.  He’s not going to be a shooter like Terrence Ross, Austin Rivers, Bradley Beal, John Jenkins, Doron Lamb, Jeremy Lamb, etc.
