Mr. HookShotParticipantWhen watching the current process of free agency, and especially what direction teams go these days, I wonder how it used to be. What you see know in the NBA, that most teams are either really good (like MIA, SAS, IND, NYN, OKC etc.) and go all in for the championship, or that teams completely blow up their roster and trade away their best player in order to get ‘assets’ (ATL – BOS – ORL etc.). The question I have is:
Is that how it always used to go? Say in the era of MJ, there were also multiple really good teams (HOU – ORL – IND etc.), but was it normal back in the day to blow up the roster and go for cap space and high draft picks?

Kaptain KryptParticipantyou have to keep in mind that scouting nowadays is way more extensive as opposed to the era of MJ… huge emphasis is placed on acquiring draft picks and said assets either by building through the draft or trading away their best player… and this applies especially to small market franchises… it just depends on the market and payroll but yea to answer your question I think there currently is a bigger shift towards the trend of trading away a teams “best player” to acquire assets as opposed to the MJ era in which it happened but not as frequently compared to the current NBA landscape…

NickWayne87Participantisn’t the norm…I can’t remember another time it was happening THIS FREQUENT….and it’s happening due to the hype of the upcoming draft class plus the recent success of a team like the thunder building through the draft.

220ParticipantI can’t particularly say I remember if this sort of thing happened in the MJ era, but to the best of my memory this has happened for years. Some team realizes they aren’t going anywhere with there current setup and decide to start over usually by moving their most expensive and their best players.

JoeWolf1When Jordan retired in 1998, the Bulls totally blew up that roster. I think Kukoc and Harper were the only guys left on that horrid 99 roster in which they tanked and got the #1 pick. I was in high school when that happened, I’m not sure about before that but it’s not like its a new concept.

Memphis MadnessParticipantYeah that is something I have been thinking. Teams going against the old MJ Bulls actually thought they had a chance. So teams tried to
win it all. Or maybe just the Knicks. Then Orlando when Shaq showed up. Cavs fans then thought they had a chance but they were probably
